Book excerpt: This ASI was planned to make a major contribution to the teaching of the principles and methods used in liquid phase ~esearch and to encourage the setting up of collaborative projects, as advocated by the European Molecular Liquids Group (secretary: Dr J. Yarwood, University of Durham, U. K. ). During the past five years considerable progress has been made in studying molecular liquids. The undoubted advantages of international collaboration led to the formation of the European Molecular Liquids Group (EMLG) in July 1981. The activities of the EMLG were widely disseminated in a special session of the European Congress on Molecular Spectroscopy (EUCMOS) held in September 1981 (for details, see J. Mol. Structure, 80 (1982) 375 - 421). Following the success of this meeting, it was thought that the aims and objectives of the E~G would be best served by the organisation of a broader-based gathering designed to attract those interested in the study of the structure, dynamics and interactions in the liquid state. Thanks to the generous support by the Scientific Affairs Division of NATO, it was possible to hold a NATO ASI on Molecular Liquids at the Italian Centre of Stanford University, Florence, Italy during June-July 1983. This book is based on the lectures presented at that meeting. The contents of this volume cover the three broad areas of current liquid phase research: (a) Analytical theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spectroscopy of Condensed Media: Dynamics of Molecular Interactions discusses the use of molecular spectroscopy (including nuclear magnetic resonance [NMR] and nonlinear optical spectroscopy) in dynamic processes in condensed molecular systems. The book reviews relationship between transition probability and the time-correlation function of an isotropic electric dipole system, linear-response theory, and light scattering resulting from the translational motion of molecules in fluids. The text describes molecular rotation, theories of angular momentum, nuclear magnetic resonance, and spontaneous and coherent Raman effects. Closely related with the Raman and Brillouin scattering are vibrational dephasing, relaxation processes, and dynamics of phase transition solids. The book highlights the advantages of using NMR and also explains the basic concepts, such as local field, spin temperature, and effective Hamiltonians, that are employed in interpreting NMR experiments. The investigator can use nonlinear optical spectroscopy to study condensed matter. The text also cites two methods in which the investigator can control the time-dependent average Hamiltonian by (1) manipulating the intensity, timing, phase of the pulses, or (2) by sample spinning. The book is intended for advanced graduate students in physical chemistry that will equally benefit both investigators and scientists involved in physics research.

Book excerpt: The observable phenomena in liquids ",hich distinguishes this state of matter from other types of condensed matter can be mainly assigned to a) the configurational disorder and b) the random motion of molecules. Both, the static and the dynamic aspect of randomness are typical for the liquid state and serve as a useful guideline in the attempts to theoretically understand this state. These two basic features, however, introduce in liquid state theory a number of apparently unsurmountable technical and conceptual problems so that progress in the last decades has only been made by small steps. In order not to complicate the situation even more, the tacit assumption was made that we could neglect internal motions of the molecules and that the molecular interactions which had to be taken into account are as simple as possible. We thus became accustomed to visualize molecules in the liquid as a dense assembly of classical rigid particles interacting with a potential which basically is represented by a Lennard-Jones type relation. In the last decade, it has become obvious that with these restrictions we dis regard many interesting effects in those liquids which are the most important ones. We thus see a serious gap developing between the refinements of liquid state theory and the exciting experiments being carried out in many laboratories.

Book excerpt: This is the first book on the subject written by a group of internationally renowned experts, whose contributions have been brought together in a unified manner. The book deals with various aspects of molecular motions and molecular interactions in dense fluids in so far as they affect spectral phenomena. Emphasis is placed on the experimental deduction of this information. Leading experts address the use of infrared and Raman vibrational spectroscopy, far infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance, light scattering, neutron scattering, molecular dynamics, collision induced spectra and molecular modelling in this context. A large number of examples are given, which are well supported by figures to clarify the methods and to demonstrate the degree of success (or failure) of various techniques. The bibliography is extensive, symbols are unified throughout, and keyword and compound indices are included. The book should be of interest to those entering this multidisciplinary field, and also to active researchers seeking a primer covering the breadth of the subject.

Book excerpt: Since the first stimulated emission pumping (SEP) experiments more than a decade ago, this technique has proven powerful for studying vibrationally excited molecules. SEP is now widely used by increasing numbers of research groups to investigate fundamental problems in spectroscopy, intramolecular dynamics, intermolecular interactions, and even reactions. SEP provides rotationally pre-selected spectra of vibrationally highly excited molecules undergoing large amplitude motions. A unique feature of SEP is the ability to access systematically a wide variety of extreme excitations localized in various parts of a molecule, and to prepare populations in specific, high vibrational levels. SEP has made it possible to ask and answer specific questions about intramolecular vibrational redistribution and the role of vibrational excitation in chemical reactions.

Book excerpt: The unique behavior of the "liquid state", together with the richness of phenomena that are observed, render liquids particularly interesting for the scientific community. Note that the most important reactions in chemical and biological systems take place in solutions and liquid-like environments. Additionally, liquids are utilized for numerous industrial applications. It is for these reasons that the understanding of their properties at the molecular level is of foremost interest in many fields of science and engineering. What can be said with certainty is that both the experimental and theoretical studies of the liquid state have a long and rich history, so that one might suppose this to be essentially a solved problem. It should be emphasized, however, that although, for more than a century, the overall scientific effort has led to a considerable progress, our understanding of the properties of the liquid systems is still incomplete and there is still more to be explored. Basic reason for this is the "many body" character of the particle interactions in liquids and the lack of long-range order, which introduce in liquid state theory and existing simulation techniques a number of conceptual and technical problems that require specific approaches. Also, many of the elementary processes that take place in liquids, including molecular translational, rotational and vibrational motions (Trans. -Rot. -Vib. coupling), structural relaxation, energy dissipation and especially chemical changes in reactive systems occur at different and/or extremely short timescales.

Book excerpt: The development of new sustainable energy sources is linked to our understanding of the molecular properties of water and aqueous solutions. Energy conversion, storage, and transduction processes, particularly those that occur in biology, fuel cells, and batteries, make use of water for the purpose of moving energy in the form of charges and mediating the redox chemistry that allows this energy to be stored as and released from chemical bonds. To build our fundamental knowledge in this area, this project supports work in the Tokmakoff group to investigate the molecular dynamics of water's hydrogen bond network, and how these dynamics influence its solutes and the mechanism of proton transport in water. To reach the goals of this grant, we developed experiments to observe molecular dynamics in water as directly as possible, using ultrafast multidimensional vibrational spectroscopy. We excite and probe broad vibrational resonances of water, molecular solutes, and protons in water. By correlating how molecules evolve from an initial excitation frequency to a final frequency, we can describe the underlying molecular dynamics. Theoretical modeling of the data with the help of computational spectroscopy coupled with molecular dynamics simulations provided the atomistic insight in these studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reflects the heights of knowledge of ultrafast chemical processes attained in these early years of the 21st century : the latest research in femtosecond and picosecond molecular processes in Chemistry and Biology, carried out around the world, is described here in more than 110 articles. The results were presented and discussed at the VIth International Conference on Femtochemistry, in Paris, France, from July 6 to July 10, 2003. The articles published here were reviewed by referees selected from specialists in the Femtochemistry community, guaranteeing a collective responsability for the quality of the research reported in the next 564 pages. Femtochemistry is an ever-growing field, where new research areas are constantly opening up, and one which both stimulates and accompanies the development of ultrafast technologies. The increasing interest in femtobiology and chemistry at the frontier with biology is an obvious indicator of the present impact of life sciences in our society. New materials and reactions at surfaces are also some of the relatively new topics that promise rapid developments. New methodologies and technologies for probing and following in real time molecular dynamical phenomena have appeared within the last ten years or so. These methods, based on multidimensional IR spectroscopies, ultrafast X-ray and electron diffraction techniques, are well represented in this book. Of ever-improving performance, they are now applied to the characterization of structural dynamics of an increasing number of chemical and biological systems. This book reports the state of research in Femtochemistry and Femtobiology presented at Paris, at the Maison de la Chimie, in July 2003, representing the tenth anniversary of the conference. * Overview of the most recent research on ultrafast events* Application of new methodologies on chemical and biological systems* Contributions by key players in the field
