Book excerpt: Atomic Spectra compiles papers on the highlighted developments in the atomic spectra. This book discusses regularities in spectra emitted by monatomic gases that lead to an understanding of the structure of atoms and discovery of the principles that govern the behavior of matter on the atomic scale. This compilation includes Rydberg's famous account of the series of spectral lines; Weisskopf and Wigner's papers on natural line-width; and Bethe's study on the Lamb shift of energy levels. Papers dealing with the spectra of atoms with more than two electrons in the valence shell and continuous spectra of atoms are not included. This publication is useful to students intending to gain knowledge on the atomic spectra.

Book excerpt: This thesis describes the application of the collinear resonance laser spectroscopy to sensitively measure the electromagnetic nuclear observables of the neutron-rich indium isotopes 115-131In. This entailed a systematic study of the efficiency of resonant ionization schemes to extract the hyperfine structure of the isotopes, the atomic charge exchange process and benchmarking of modern atomic calculations with a laser ablation ion source. This allowed determination of the root-mean-square nuclear charge radii, nuclear magnetic dipole moments, nuclear electric quadrupole moments and nuclear spins of the 113-131In isotopes with high accuracy. With a proton hole in the Z = 50 nuclear shell closure of tin and several nuclear isomer states, these measurements of the indium (Z = 49) isotope chain provided an efficient probe of the evolution of nuclear structure properties towards and at the doubly-magic nuclear shell closure of 132Sn (N = 82) - revealing unpredicted changes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High Resolution Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy, Volume 2 provides a comprehensive coverage of the theories and methods for analysis of high resolution spectra. The title also presents a discourse on other variables that affect the spectra. The text first details the correlations of 1H resonance spectral parameters with molecular structure, and then proceeds to tackling the 19F nuclear magnetic resonance studies. Next, the selection deals with the NMR spectra of nuclei other than hydrogen fluoride. The text also provides data sets, such as nuclear properties, T-values, and chemical shifts. The book will be of great use to scientists who utilize nuclear magnetic resonance in their work.

Book excerpt: This book presents a critical assessment of progress on the use of nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy to determine the structure of proteins, including brief reviews of the history of the field along with coverage of current clinical and in vivo applications. The book, in honor of Oleg Jardetsky, one of the pioneers of the field, is edited by two of the most highly respected investigators using NMR, and features contributions by most of the leading workers in the field. It will be valued as a landmark publication that presents the state-of-the-art perspectives regarding one of today's most important technologies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Atomic and nuclear physics are two flourishing but distinct branches of physics; the subject of isotope shifts in atomic spectra is one of the few that links these two branches. It is a subject that has been studied for well over fifty years, but interest in the subject, far from flagging, has been stimulated in recent years. Fast computers have enabled theoreticians to evaluate the properties of many-electron atoms, and laser spectroscopy has made it possible to measure isotope shifts in the previously unmeasurable areas of very rare isotopes, short-lived radioactive isotopes, weak transitions, and transitions involving high-lying atomic levels. Isotope shifts can now be measured with greater accuracy than before in both optical transitions and x-ray transitions of muonic atoms; this improved accuracy is revealing new facets of the subject. I am very grateful to Dr. H. G. Kuhn, F. R. S. , for having introduced me to the subject in the 1950s, and for supervising my efforts to measure isotope shifts in the spectrum of ruthenium. I thus approach the subject as an experimental atomic spectroscopist. This bias is obviously apparent in my use of the spectroscopist's notation of lower-upper for a transition, rather than the nuclear physicist's upper-lower. My reasons are given in Section 1. 3 and I hope that nuclear physicists will forgive me for using this notation even for muonic x-ray transitions.
