Book Synopsis Spectral Theory of Ordinary Differential Operators by : Joachim Weidmann
Download or read book Spectral Theory of Ordinary Differential Operators written by Joachim Weidmann and published by Springer. This book was released on 2006-11-15 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These notes will be useful and of interest to mathematicians and physicists active in research as well as for students with some knowledge of the abstract theory of operators in Hilbert spaces. They give a complete spectral theory for ordinary differential expressions of arbitrary order n operating on -valued functions existence and construction of self-adjoint realizations via boundary conditions, determination and study of general properties of the resolvent, spectral representation and spectral resolution. Special attention is paid to the question of separated boundary conditions, spectral multiplicity and absolutely continuous spectrum. For the case nm=2 (Sturm-Liouville operators and Dirac systems) the classical theory of Weyl-Titchmarch is included. Oscillation theory for Sturm-Liouville operators and Dirac systems is developed and applied to the study of the essential and absolutely continuous spectrum. The results are illustrated by the explicit solution of a number of particular problems including the spectral theory one partical Schrödinger and Dirac operators with spherically symmetric potentials. The methods of proof are functionally analytic wherever possible.
Book Synopsis Pseudodifferential Operators and Spectral Theory by : M.A. Shubin

This book was released on 2011-06-28 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I had mixed feelings when I thought how I should prepare the book for the second edition. It was clear to me that I had to correct all mistakes and misprints that were found in the book during the life of the first edition. This was easy to do because the mistakes were mostly minor and easy to correct, and the misprints were not many. It was more difficult to decide whether I should update the book (or at least its bibliography) somehow. I decided that it did not need much of an updating. The main value of any good mathematical book is that it teaches its reader some language and some skills. It can not exhaust any substantial topic no matter how hard the author tried. Pseudodifferential operators became a language and a tool of analysis of partial differential equations long ago. Therefore it is meaningless to try to exhaust this topic. Here is an easy proof. As of July 3, 2000, MathSciNet (the database of the American Mathematical Society) in a few seconds found 3695 sources, among them 363 books, during its search for "pseudodifferential operator". (The search also led to finding 963 sources for "pseudo-differential operator" but I was unable to check how much the results ofthese two searches intersected). This means that the corresponding words appear either in the title or in the review published in Mathematical Reviews.
Book Synopsis Elliptic Differential Operators and Spectral Analysis by : D. E. Edmunds
Download or read book Elliptic Differential Operators and Spectral Analysis written by D. E. Edmunds and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-11-20 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with elliptic differential equations, providing the analytic background necessary for the treatment of associated spectral questions, and covering important topics previously scattered throughout the literature. Starting with the basics of elliptic operators and their naturally associated function spaces, the authors then proceed to cover various related topics of current and continuing importance. Particular attention is given to the characterisation of self-adjoint extensions of symmetric operators acting in a Hilbert space and, for elliptic operators, the realisation of such extensions in terms of boundary conditions. A good deal of material not previously available in book form, such as the treatment of the Schauder estimates, is included. Requiring only basic knowledge of measure theory and functional analysis, the book is accessible to graduate students and will be of interest to all researchers in partial differential equations. The reader will value its self-contained, thorough and unified presentation of the modern theory of elliptic operators.

The scientific advisory board of the conference in Clausthal consisted of M. Ben-Artzi (Jerusalem), Chen Hua (Peking), M. Demuth (Clausthal), T. Ichinose (Kanazawa), L. Rodino (Turin), B.-W. Schulze (Potsdam) and J. Sjöstrand (Paris). The book is aimed at researchers in mathematics and mathematical physics with interests in partial differential equations and all its related fields.
Book Synopsis Spectral Analysis of Differential Operators by : Fedor S. Rofe-Beketov
Download or read book Spectral Analysis of Differential Operators written by Fedor S. Rofe-Beketov and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2005 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first monograph devoted to the Sturm oscillatory theory for infinite systems of differential equations and its relations with the spectral theory. It aims to study a theory of self-adjoint problems for such systems, based on an elegant method of binary relations. Another topic investigated in the book is the behavior of discrete eigenvalues which appear in spectral gaps of the Hill operator and almost periodic SchrAdinger operators due to local perturbations of the potential (e.g., modeling impurities in crystals). The book is based on results that have not been presented in other monographs. The only prerequisites needed to read it are basics of ordinary differential equations and operator theory. It should be accessible to graduate students, though its main topics are of interest to research mathematicians working in functional analysis, differential equations and mathematical physics, as well as to physicists interested in spectral theory of differential operators."
Book Synopsis Spectral Theory of Random Schrödinger Operators by : R. Carmona
Download or read book Spectral Theory of Random Schrödinger Operators written by R. Carmona and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 611 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the seminal work of P. Anderson in 1958, localization in disordered systems has been the object of intense investigations. Mathematically speaking, the phenomenon can be described as follows: the self-adjoint operators which are used as Hamiltonians for these systems have a ten dency to have pure point spectrum, especially in low dimension or for large disorder. A lot of effort has been devoted to the mathematical study of the random self-adjoint operators relevant to the theory of localization for disordered systems. It is fair to say that progress has been made and that the un derstanding of the phenomenon has improved. This does not mean that the subject is closed. Indeed, the number of important problems actually solved is not larger than the number of those remaining. Let us mention some of the latter: • A proof of localization at all energies is still missing for two dimen sional systems, though it should be within reachable range. In the case of the two dimensional lattice, this problem has been approached by the investigation of a finite discrete band, but the limiting pro cedure necessary to reach the full two-dimensional lattice has never been controlled. • The smoothness properties of the density of states seem to escape all attempts in dimension larger than one. This problem is particularly serious in the continuous case where one does not even know if it is continuous.
Book Synopsis A Guide to Spectral Theory by : Christophe Cheverry
Download or read book A Guide to Spectral Theory written by Christophe Cheverry and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-05-06 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook provides a graduate-level introduction to the spectral theory of linear operators on Banach and Hilbert spaces, guiding readers through key components of spectral theory and its applications in quantum physics. Based on their extensive teaching experience, the authors present topics in a progressive manner so that each chapter builds on the ones preceding. Researchers and students alike will also appreciate the exploration of more advanced applications and research perspectives presented near the end of the book. Beginning with a brief introduction to the relationship between spectral theory and quantum physics, the authors go on to explore unbounded operators, analyzing closed, adjoint, and self-adjoint operators. Next, the spectrum of a closed operator is defined and the fundamental properties of Fredholm operators are introduced. The authors then develop the Grushin method to execute the spectral analysis of compact operators. The chapters that follow are devoted to examining Hille-Yoshida and Stone theorems, the spectral analysis of self-adjoint operators, and trace-class and Hilbert-Schmidt operators. The final chapter opens the discussion to several selected applications. Throughout this textbook, detailed proofs are given, and the statements are illustrated by a number of well-chosen examples. At the end, an appendix about foundational functional analysis theorems is provided to help the uninitiated reader. A Guide to Spectral Theory: Applications and Exercises is intended for graduate students taking an introductory course in spectral theory or operator theory. A background in linear functional analysis and partial differential equations is assumed; basic knowledge of bounded linear operators is useful but not required. PhD students and researchers will also find this volume to be of interest, particularly the research directions provided in later chapters.

Book Synopsis Introduction to Spectral Theory in Hilbert Space by : Gilbert Helmberg
Download or read book Introduction to Spectral Theory in Hilbert Space written by Gilbert Helmberg and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-11-28 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: North-Holland Series in Applied Mathematics and Mechanics, Volume 6: Introduction to Spectral Theory in Hilbert Space focuses on the mechanics, principles, and approaches involved in spectral theory in Hilbert space. The publication first elaborates on the concept and specific geometry of Hilbert space and bounded linear operators. Discussions focus on projection and adjoint operators, bilinear forms, bounded linear mappings, isomorphisms, orthogonal subspaces, base, subspaces, finite dimensional Euclidean space, and normed linear spaces. The text then takes a look at the general theory of linear operators and spectral analysis of compact linear operators, including spectral decomposition of a compact selfadjoint operator, weakly convergent sequences, spectrum of a compact linear operator, and eigenvalues of a linear operator. The manuscript ponders on the spectral analysis of bounded linear operators and unbounded selfadjoint operators. Topics include spectral decomposition of an unbounded selfadjoint operator and bounded normal operator, functions of a unitary operator, step functions of a bounded selfadjoint operator, polynomials in a bounded operator, and order relation for bounded selfadjoint operators. The publication is a valuable source of data for mathematicians and researchers interested in spectral theory in Hilbert space.
Book Synopsis Spectral Theory by : David Borthwick
Download or read book Spectral Theory written by David Borthwick and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-03-12 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook offers a concise introduction to spectral theory, designed for newcomers to functional analysis. Curating the content carefully, the author builds to a proof of the spectral theorem in the early part of the book. Subsequent chapters illustrate a variety of application areas, exploring key examples in detail. Readers looking to delve further into specialized topics will find ample references to classic and recent literature. Beginning with a brief introduction to functional analysis, the text focuses on unbounded operators and separable Hilbert spaces as the essential tools needed for the subsequent theory. A thorough discussion of the concepts of spectrum and resolvent follows, leading to a complete proof of the spectral theorem for unbounded self-adjoint operators. Applications of spectral theory to differential operators comprise the remaining four chapters. These chapters introduce the Dirichlet Laplacian operator, Schrödinger operators, operators on graphs, and the spectral theory of Riemannian manifolds. Spectral Theory offers a uniquely accessible introduction to ideas that invite further study in any number of different directions. A background in real and complex analysis is assumed; the author presents the requisite tools from functional analysis within the text. This introductory treatment would suit a functional analysis course intended as a pathway to linear PDE theory. Independent later chapters allow for flexibility in selecting applications to suit specific interests within a one-semester course.

Book Synopsis The Spectral Theory of Toeplitz Operators. (AM-99), Volume 99 by : L. Boutet de Monvel
Download or read book The Spectral Theory of Toeplitz Operators. (AM-99), Volume 99 written by L. Boutet de Monvel and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2016-03-02 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theory of Toeplitz operators has come to resemble more and more in recent years the classical theory of pseudodifferential operators. For instance, Toeplitz operators possess a symbolic calculus analogous to the usual symbolic calculus, and by symbolic means one can construct parametrices for Toeplitz operators and create new Toeplitz operators out of old ones by functional operations. If P is a self-adjoint pseudodifferential operator on a compact manifold with an elliptic symbol that is of order greater than zero, then it has a discrete spectrum. Also, it is well known that the asymptotic behavior of its eigenvalues is closely related to the behavior of the bicharacteristic flow generated by its symbol. It is natural to ask if similar results are true for Toeplitz operators. In the course of answering this question, the authors explore in depth the analogies between Toeplitz operators and pseudodifferential operators and show that both can be viewed as the "quantized" objects associated with functions on compact contact manifolds.
