Book excerpt: Rapid developments in multivariable spectral theory have led to important and fascinating results which also have applications in other mathematical disciplines. In this book, various concepts from function theory and complex analytic geometry are drawn together to give a new approach to concrete spectral computations and give insights into new developments in the spectral theory of linear operators. Classical results from cohomology theory of Banach algebras, multidimensional spectral theory, and complex analytic geometry have been freshly interpreted using the language of homological algebra. The advantages of this approach are illustrated by a variety of examples, unexpected applications, and conceptually new ideas that should stimulate further research among mathematicians.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aimed at a general mathematical audience, this book provides a careful exposition of developments in the theory of spectral decomposition. Bringing the reader from the basics up to the level of current research in the area at the time of writing, Lange and Wang present an accessible account of the techniques used in the theory and applications of decomposable operators and related classes of operators. The book begins with a discussion of criteria for decomposable and related types of operators, and an analysis that relates and distinguishes among them. Perturbation theory of decomposable and other operators, applications to classical Hilberty space operators, quasisimilarity, and a new class of weakly decomposable operators are also discussed. The book closes with an exposition of some classical theories on invariant subspaces for subdecomposable and hyponormal operators, and a presentation of the parallel spectral theory of commuting systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an elegant and concise fashion, this book presents the concepts of functional analysis required by students of mathematics and physics. It begins with the basics of normed linear spaces and quickly proceeds to concentrate on Hilbert spaces, specifically the spectral theorem for bounded as well as unbounded operators in separable Hilbert spaces. While the first two chapters are devoted to basic propositions concerning normed vector spaces and Hilbert spaces, the third chapter treats advanced topics which are perhaps not standard in a first course on functional analysis. It begins with the Gelfand theory of commutative Banach algebras, and proceeds to the Gelfand-Naimark theorem on commutative C*-algebras. A discussion of representations of C*-algebras follows, and the final section of this chapter is devoted to the Hahn-Hellinger classification of separable representations of commutative C*-algebras. After this detour into operator algebras, the fourth chapter reverts to more standard operator theory in Hilbert space, dwelling on topics such as the spectral theorem for normal operators, the polar decomposition theorem, and the Fredholm theory for compact operators. A brief introduction to the theory of unbounded operators on Hilbert space is given in the fifth and final chapter. There is a voluminous appendix whose purpose is to fill in possible gaps in the reader's background in various areas such as linear algebra, topology, set theory and measure theory. The book is interspersed with many exercises, and hints are provided for the solutions to the more challenging of these.

Its emphasis is on recent aspects of theory and detailed proofs, with the primary goal of offering a modern introductory textbook for a first graduate course in the subject. The coverage of topics is thorough, as the book explores various delicate points and hidden features often left untreated. Spectral Theory of Operators on Hilbert Spaces is addressed to an interdisciplinary audience of graduate students in mathematics, statistics, economics, engineering, and physics. It will also be useful to working mathematicians using spectral theory of Hilbert space operators, as well as for scientists wishing to apply spectral theory to their field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, which is almost entirely devoted to unbounded operators, gives a unified treatment of the contemporary local spectral theory for unbounded closed operators on a complex Banach space. While the main part of the book is original, necessary background materials provided. There are some completely new topics treated, such as the complete spectral duality theory with the first comprehensive proof of the predual theorem, in two different versions. Also covered are spectral resolvents of various kinds (monotomic, strongly monotonic, almost localized, analytically invariant), and spectral decompositions with respect to the identity. The book concludes with an extensive reference list, including many papers published in the People's Republic of China, here brought to the attention of Western mathematicians for the first time. Pure mathematicians, especially those working in operator theory and functional analysis, will find this book of interest.

Book excerpt: Nobel prize winner Ilya Prigogine writes in his preface: "Irreversibility is a challenge to mathematics...[which] leads to generalized functions and to an extension of spectral analysis beyond the conventional Hilbert space theory." Meeting this challenge required new mathematical formulations-obstacles met and largely overcome thanks primarily to the contributors to this volume." This compilation of works grew out of material presented at the "Hyperfunctions, Operator Theory and Dynamical Systems" symposium at the International Solvay Institutes for Physics and Chemistry in 1997. The result is a coherently organized collective work that moves from general, widely applicable mathematical methods to ever more specialized physical applications. Presented in two sections, part one describes Generalized Functions and Operator Theory, part two addresses Operator Theory and Dynamical Systems. The interplay between mathematics and physics is now more necessary than ever-and more difficult than ever, given the increasing complexity of theories and methods.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the book "Basic Operator Theory" by Gohberg-Goldberg was pub lished, we, that is the present authors, intended to continue with another book which would show the readers the large variety of classes of operators and the important role they play in applications. The book was planned to be of modest size, but due to the profusion of results in this area of analysis, the number of topics grew larger than ex pected. Consequently, we decided to divide the material into two volumes - the first volume being presented now. During the past years, courses and seminars were given at our respective in stitutions based on parts of the texts. These were well received by the audience and enabled us to make appropriate choices for the topics and presentation for the two vol umes. We would like to thank G.J. Groenewald, A.B. Kuijper and A.C.M. Ran of the Vrije Universiteit at Amsterdam, who provided us with lists of remarks and corrections. We are now aware that the Basic Operator Theory book should be revised so that it may suitably fit in with our present volumes. This revision is planned to be the last step of an induction and not the first.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These ten lectures were presented by Guido Weiss at the University of Nebraska during the week of May 31 to June 4, 1976. They were a part of the Regional Conference Program sponsored by the Conference Board of the Mathematical Sciences and funded by the National Science Foundation. The topic chosen, ``the transference method'', involves a very simple idea that can be applied to several different branches of analysis. The authors have chosen familiar special cases in order to illustrate the use of transference: much that involves general locally compact abelian groups can be understood by examining the real line; the group of rotations can be used to explain what can be done with compact groups; $SL(2,\mathbf C)$ plays the same role vis-a-vis noncompact semisimple Lie groups. The main theme of these lectures is the interplay between properties of convolution operators on classical groups (such as the reals, integers, the torus) and operators associated with more general measure spaces. The basic idea behind this interplay is the notion of transferred operator; these are operators ``obtained'' from convolutions by replacing the translation by some action of the group (or, in some cases, a semigroup) and give rise, among other things, to an interaction between ergodic theory and harmonic analysis. There are illustrations of these ideas. A graduate student in analysis would be able to read most of this book. The work is partly expository, but is mostly ``self-contained''.
