Book Synopsis Elliptic Differential Operators and Spectral Analysis by : D. E. Edmunds
Download or read book Elliptic Differential Operators and Spectral Analysis written by D. E. Edmunds and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-11-20 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with elliptic differential equations, providing the analytic background necessary for the treatment of associated spectral questions, and covering important topics previously scattered throughout the literature. Starting with the basics of elliptic operators and their naturally associated function spaces, the authors then proceed to cover various related topics of current and continuing importance. Particular attention is given to the characterisation of self-adjoint extensions of symmetric operators acting in a Hilbert space and, for elliptic operators, the realisation of such extensions in terms of boundary conditions. A good deal of material not previously available in book form, such as the treatment of the Schauder estimates, is included. Requiring only basic knowledge of measure theory and functional analysis, the book is accessible to graduate students and will be of interest to all researchers in partial differential equations. The reader will value its self-contained, thorough and unified presentation of the modern theory of elliptic operators.
Book Synopsis Spectral Theory of Ordinary Differential Operators by : Joachim Weidmann
Download or read book Spectral Theory of Ordinary Differential Operators written by Joachim Weidmann and published by Springer. This book was released on 2006-11-15 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These notes will be useful and of interest to mathematicians and physicists active in research as well as for students with some knowledge of the abstract theory of operators in Hilbert spaces. They give a complete spectral theory for ordinary differential expressions of arbitrary order n operating on -valued functions existence and construction of self-adjoint realizations via boundary conditions, determination and study of general properties of the resolvent, spectral representation and spectral resolution. Special attention is paid to the question of separated boundary conditions, spectral multiplicity and absolutely continuous spectrum. For the case nm=2 (Sturm-Liouville operators and Dirac systems) the classical theory of Weyl-Titchmarch is included. Oscillation theory for Sturm-Liouville operators and Dirac systems is developed and applied to the study of the essential and absolutely continuous spectrum. The results are illustrated by the explicit solution of a number of particular problems including the spectral theory one partical Schrödinger and Dirac operators with spherically symmetric potentials. The methods of proof are functionally analytic wherever possible.

Book Synopsis Spectral Analysis of Differential Operators by : Fedor S. Rofe-Beketov
Download or read book Spectral Analysis of Differential Operators written by Fedor S. Rofe-Beketov and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2005 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first monograph devoted to the Sturm oscillatory theory for infinite systems of differential equations and its relations with the spectral theory. It aims to study a theory of self-adjoint problems for such systems, based on an elegant method of binary relations. Another topic investigated in the book is the behavior of discrete eigenvalues which appear in spectral gaps of the Hill operator and almost periodic SchrAdinger operators due to local perturbations of the potential (e.g., modeling impurities in crystals). The book is based on results that have not been presented in other monographs. The only prerequisites needed to read it are basics of ordinary differential equations and operator theory. It should be accessible to graduate students, though its main topics are of interest to research mathematicians working in functional analysis, differential equations and mathematical physics, as well as to physicists interested in spectral theory of differential operators."

Book Synopsis Pseudodifferential Operators and Spectral Theory by : M.A. Shubin
Download or read book Pseudodifferential Operators and Spectral Theory written by M.A. Shubin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-06-28 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I had mixed feelings when I thought how I should prepare the book for the second edition. It was clear to me that I had to correct all mistakes and misprints that were found in the book during the life of the first edition. This was easy to do because the mistakes were mostly minor and easy to correct, and the misprints were not many. It was more difficult to decide whether I should update the book (or at least its bibliography) somehow. I decided that it did not need much of an updating. The main value of any good mathematical book is that it teaches its reader some language and some skills. It can not exhaust any substantial topic no matter how hard the author tried. Pseudodifferential operators became a language and a tool of analysis of partial differential equations long ago. Therefore it is meaningless to try to exhaust this topic. Here is an easy proof. As of July 3, 2000, MathSciNet (the database of the American Mathematical Society) in a few seconds found 3695 sources, among them 363 books, during its search for "pseudodifferential operator". (The search also led to finding 963 sources for "pseudo-differential operator" but I was unable to check how much the results ofthese two searches intersected). This means that the corresponding words appear either in the title or in the review published in Mathematical Reviews.

The special topics of the conference were spectral and scattering theory, semiclassical and asymptotic analysis, pseudodifferential operators and their relation to geometry, as well as partial differential operators and their connection to stochastic analysis and to the theory of semigroups. The scientific advisory board of the conference in Clausthal consisted of M. Ben-Artzi (Jerusalem), Chen Hua (Peking), M. Demuth (Clausthal), T. Ichinose (Kanazawa), L. Rodino (Turin), B.-W. Schulze (Potsdam) and J. Sjöstrand (Paris). The book is aimed at researchers in mathematics and mathematical physics with interests in partial differential equations and all its related fields.
Book Synopsis Spectral Analysis on Graph-like Spaces by : Olaf Post
Download or read book Spectral Analysis on Graph-like Spaces written by Olaf Post and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-01-06 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Small-radius tubular structures have attracted considerable attention in the last few years, and are frequently used in different areas such as Mathematical Physics, Spectral Geometry and Global Analysis. In this monograph, we analyse Laplace-like operators on thin tubular structures ("graph-like spaces''), and their natural limits on metric graphs. In particular, we explore norm resolvent convergence, convergence of the spectra and resonances. Since the underlying spaces in the thin radius limit change, and become singular in the limit, we develop new tools such as norm convergence of operators acting in different Hilbert spaces, an extension of the concept of boundary triples to partial differential operators, and an abstract definition of resonances via boundary triples. These tools are formulated in an abstract framework, independent of the original problem of graph-like spaces, so that they can be applied in many other situations where the spaces are perturbed.
Book Synopsis Method of Spectral Mappings in the Inverse Problem Theory by : Vacheslav A. Yurko
Download or read book Method of Spectral Mappings in the Inverse Problem Theory written by Vacheslav A. Yurko and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2013-10-10 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inverse problems of spectral analysis consist in recovering operators from their spectral characteristics. Such problems often appear in mathematics, mechanics, physics, electronics, geophysics, meteorology and other branches of natural science. This monograph is devoted to inverse problems of spectral analysis for ordinary differential equations. Its aim ist to present the main results on inverse spectral problems using the so-called method of spectral mappings, which is one of the main tools in inverse spectral theory. The book consists of three chapters: In Chapter 1 the method of spectral mappings is presented in the simplest version for the Sturm-Liouville operator. In Chapter 2 the inverse problem of recovering higher-order differential operators of the form, on the half-line and on a finite interval, is considered. In Chapter 3 inverse spectral problems for differential operators with nonlinear dependence on the spectral parameter are studied.

Book Synopsis A Guide to Spectral Theory by : Christophe Cheverry
Download or read book A Guide to Spectral Theory written by Christophe Cheverry and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-05-06 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook provides a graduate-level introduction to the spectral theory of linear operators on Banach and Hilbert spaces, guiding readers through key components of spectral theory and its applications in quantum physics. Based on their extensive teaching experience, the authors present topics in a progressive manner so that each chapter builds on the ones preceding. Researchers and students alike will also appreciate the exploration of more advanced applications and research perspectives presented near the end of the book. Beginning with a brief introduction to the relationship between spectral theory and quantum physics, the authors go on to explore unbounded operators, analyzing closed, adjoint, and self-adjoint operators. Next, the spectrum of a closed operator is defined and the fundamental properties of Fredholm operators are introduced. The authors then develop the Grushin method to execute the spectral analysis of compact operators. The chapters that follow are devoted to examining Hille-Yoshida and Stone theorems, the spectral analysis of self-adjoint operators, and trace-class and Hilbert-Schmidt operators. The final chapter opens the discussion to several selected applications. Throughout this textbook, detailed proofs are given, and the statements are illustrated by a number of well-chosen examples. At the end, an appendix about foundational functional analysis theorems is provided to help the uninitiated reader. A Guide to Spectral Theory: Applications and Exercises is intended for graduate students taking an introductory course in spectral theory or operator theory. A background in linear functional analysis and partial differential equations is assumed; basic knowledge of bounded linear operators is useful but not required. PhD students and researchers will also find this volume to be of interest, particularly the research directions provided in later chapters.

Book Synopsis The Analysis of Linear Partial Differential Operators I by : Lars Hörmander
Download or read book The Analysis of Linear Partial Differential Operators I written by Lars Hörmander and published by Springer. This book was released on 1990-08-10 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main change in this edition is the inclusion of exercises with answers and hints. This is meant to emphasize that this volume has been written as a general course in modern analysis on a graduate student level and not only as the beginning of a specialized course in partial differen tial equations. In particular, it could also serve as an introduction to harmonic analysis. Exercises are given primarily to the sections of gen eral interest; there are none to the last two chapters. Most of the exercises are just routine problems meant to give some familiarity with standard use of the tools introduced in the text. Others are extensions of the theory presented there. As a rule rather complete though brief solutions are then given in the answers and hints. To a large extent the exercises have been taken over from courses or examinations given by Anders Melin or myself at the University of Lund. I am grateful to Anders Melin for letting me use the problems originating from him and for numerous valuable comments on this collection. As in the revised printing of Volume II, a number of minor flaws have also been corrected in this edition. Many of these have been called to my attention by the Russian translators of the first edition, and I wish to thank them for our excellent collaboration.
