Book excerpt: "This report presents comprehensive guidelines for evaluating and using soil reinforcement techniques in the construction of retaining walls, embankment'slopes, and natural or cut slopes. A variety of available systems for reinforced soil including in-situ soil nailing are described from information assembled from published literature and manufacturers' catalogs. Detailed guidelines are given for design of reinforced soil structures with inextensible and extensible reinforcements and soil nailing. Design examples are included. These guidelines were developed from technical review of extensive laboratory model tests, small and large scale centrifuge tests, finite element numerical studies and full scale field tests on eight 20-foot high walls and four 25-foot high sloping embankments. The manual contains descriptions of construction procedures, instrumentation and specifications for reinforced soil structures"--Technical report documentation p.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book to provide a detailed overview of Geosynthetic Reinforced Soil Walls Geosynthetic Reinforced Soil (GRS) Walls deploy horizontal layers of closely spaced tensile inclusion in the fill material to achieve stability of a soil mass. GRS walls are more adaptable to different environmental conditions, more economical, and offer high performance in a wide range of transportation infrastructure applications. This book addresses both GRS and GMSE, with a much stronger emphasis on the former. For completeness, it begins with a review of shear strength of soils and classical earth pressure theories. It then goes on to examine the use of geosynthetics as reinforcement, and followed by the load-deformation behavior of GRS mass as a soil-geosynthetic composite, reinforcing mechanisms of GRS, and GRS walls with different types of facing. Finally, the book finishes by covering design concepts with design examples for different loading and geometric conditions, and the construction of GRS walls, including typical construction procedures and general construction guidelines. The number of GRS walls and abutments built to date is relatively low due to lack of understanding of GRS. While failure rate of GMSE has been estimated to be around 5%, failure of GRS has been found to be practically nil, with studies suggesting many advantages, including a smaller susceptibility to long-term creep and stronger resistance to seismic loads when well-compacted granular fill is employed. Geosynthetic Reinforced Soil (GRS) Walls will serve as an excellent guide or reference for wall projects such as transportation infrastructure—including roadways, bridges, retaining walls, and earth slopes—that are in dire need of repair and replacement in the U.S. and abroad. Covers both GRS and GMSE (MSE with geosynthetics as reinforcement); with much greater emphasis on GRS walls Showcases reinforcing mechanisms, engineering behavior, and design concepts of GRS and includes many step-by-step design examples Features information on typical construction procedures and general construction guidelines Includes hundreds of line drawings and photos Geosynthetic Reinforced Soil (GRS) Walls is an important book for practicing geotechnical engineers and structural engineers, as well as for advanced students of civil, structural, and geotechnical engineering.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mechanically stabilized earth walls are an attractive alternative to conventional reinforced concrete retaining walls. The economy of these walls for non-critical applications might be improved by using alternative backfills consisting of on-site soils or quarried materials for the reinforced zone. The results of this study indicate that use of alternative backfill soils is feasible for non-critical wall applications. Soils for use with metallic reinforcement should be well graded with a maximum size of 3 inches and have less than 20 percent fines with a plasticity index less than 6. Backfill for polymer-reinforced walls should be well graded with a maximum size of 3/4 inch and less than 30 percent fines with a plasticity index less than 9. Use of wall systems such as geosynthetic reinforced modular block walls should be considered when using alternative backfills. The primary benefit of using alternative soils is in material procurement. Additional costs might be incurred for quality control testing and material placement; however there is presently insufficient data to provide quantitative estimates of these costs.

Book excerpt: The completely revised and extended Recommendations deal with all questions relevant to the planning and dimensioning of geosynthetics-reinforced earth structures. In addition to the demands on materials and analysis principles, the applications of geosynthetics in a range of foundation systems, ground improvement measures, highways engineering projects, in slopes and retaining structures, and in landfill engineering are discussed. The Recommendations have been supplemented by the following sections: - reinforced earth structures over point or linear bearing elements, - foundation systems using geotextile-encased columns, - bridging subsidence, - dynamic actions of geosynthetic-reinforced systems. The remaining sections have been fundamentally revised and updated in line with current standards and codes of practice.

This book was released on 2017-06-12 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reinforced soil is a composite material formed by the association of frictional soil and tension-resistant elements in the form of sheets, strips, nets or mats of metal, synthetic fabrics, or fibre reinforced plastics and arranged in the soil mass in such a way as to reduce or suppress the tensile strain that might develop under gravity and boundary forces. The variety and range of applications of reinforced soil technique are unlimited. Jones (1985) identified several field applications, viz., retaining walls, abutments, quay walls, embankments, dams, hill roads, housing, foundations, railways, industry, pipe works, waterway structures and underground structures. In several countries structures have been constructed using this technique and the concept has become very popular. The book covers all the important topics like Basic Mechanism, Strength Characteristics, Frictional Characteristics, Reinforced Soil, Wall, Wall with Reinforced Backfill, Foundation on Reinforced Soil, Soil Nailing and Randomly Distributed soil. Each chapter is supported by illustrative examples for easy understanding. In this edition, chapters on Reinforced Soil Wall, Foundation on Reinforced Soil, and Randomly distributed reinforced soil have been substantially modified making the book more useful. The book would well serve and benefit undergraduate and postgraduate students, researchers and professional geotechnical engineers.

Book excerpt: This manual provides guidance for the safe design and economical construction of retaining and flood walls. This manual is intended primarily for retaining walls which will be subjected to hydraulic loadings such as flowing water, submergence, wave action, and spray, exposure to chemically contaminated atmosphere, and/or severe climatic conditions. For the design of retaining walls which will not be subjected to hydraulic loadings or severe environmental conditions as described above, TM S-8l8-l may be used for computing the loadings and evaluating the stability of the structure.

Book excerpt: This project, as part of the FHWA Demonstration Projects Program was intended to demonstrate the practicality, cost effectiveness, and esthetics of reinforced earth structures in highway construction. The reinforced earth concept was developed in France and consists of reinforcing earth with horizontal elements extending from a thin facing (concrete or steel) into a granular backfill to form retaining walls or other types of supporting structures. This report describes the first six retaining structures built on highway projects in the U.S., the first bridge abutment and the first foundation slab supporting an embankment in a sinkhole prone geological area. Construction techniques and equipment are discussed as well as costs for each project.
