R. Bergholz and published by Pensoft Publishers. This book was released on 2007 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The periodic flood pulse of the Amazon River has been the main controlling factor in the local ecosystems for at least two million years. Numerous adaptations, in some cases along with speciation, have evolved in local terrestrial invertebrates. The small millipede Poratia obliterata (Kraus, 1960), which probably originates from the Andes, is currently known from a remarkably broad range of Central Amazonian biotopes, i.e. various seasonal inundation forests, upland forest and plantations. Like most native millipedes, P. obliterata appears to escape flooding by tree ascents. Such developed survival strategies adaptive to annual inundation can either reflect ecological plasticity or implicate ecological speciation, .i.e. 'biotope-specific races' or ecotypes. To assess the causal mode of adaptation, ecological studies with genetic analyses are combined in this work. Comparing the distribution, biotope range, population subdivision and genetic diversity of different millipedes, the species P. obliterata appears to feature a generalist strategy. and widespread species, which seems to cope well with various biotopes and thus successfully invaded seasonal inundation forests. The book is addressed to specialists in evolution, ecological genetics, ecology and conservation of wetlands, millipede research and conservation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the Inaugural Meeting of the European Association of Acarol ogists (EURAAC), held in Amsterdam in 1987, it was decided that the holding of a Symposium at regular intervals should be a major objective. With this in view, it was agreed that Professor Reinhart Schuster, the senior editor, be invited to accept the Presidency of the Association and, arising from that Office, to organize the first Symposium in Austria in 1988. There was strong support for a main theme focused on a particular aspect of acarology. From these discussions there emerged the proposal that emphasis be placed on aspects of reproduction, development and life-history strategies of the Acari. These were topics in the forefront of the discipline with exciting developments of interest not only to acarologists but to a wider audience because of the light they cast on fundamental processes in physiology, ecology and evolutionary biology. The object then was to invite a small number of key workers to present extended papers related to the main theme. There were seven of these all of which appear in the book. The remaining 51 contributions were offered papers a number of which fit within the framework of the Symposium theme.

Book excerpt: An "Identification Manual" on the Amazonian Entomofauna for beginners and non-specialists has been demanded for many years. Most taxonomic literature on Neotropical Arachnida and Myriapoda is strictly descriptive, keys in translated and accepted textbooks are restricted to the higher taxa and first introductions to Amazonian arthropods refer to specific sampling sites and are mainly devoted to insects. And the other hand, taxonomical knowledge on Amazonian Arthropoda was much improved due to investigations for the last two decades, cooperatively between the National Institute for Amazonian Research and the Tropical Ecology Working Group at the Max-Planck-Institute for Limnology in Ploen/Germany
