Book excerpt: This volume is the first international collection of the best physics problems (both theoretical and experimental) given at the national physics competitions for high school students in different countries. The book introduces the short history of the International Physics Olympiad, the Statutes, the Syllabus, the statistical data including complete list of winners and a collection of national reports. Each of the national report will contains — as a main part — the best theoretical and experimental problems (with complete solutions) given at the national competition or at the training of the team before the international competition. Taking into account that at present the International Physics Olympiad involves about 35 countries, we are sure that the book will be interesting for everybody involved with physics education not only with the physics olympiads.

It was developed to provide young Asian students with a platform to display their physics knowledge. It is the celebration of the best in pre-university physics. Each year, for about one week, pre-university students from across Asia gather and test their theory and practical skills in physics. This book contains question papers in both theory and experiment and their solutions together with description of various activities of the 15th Asian Physics Olympiad held in Singapore from 11th to 18th May 2014. The book will serve as a valuable source of interesting and challenging experimental and theoretical topics for young physicists worldwide.

Book excerpt: In this important volume, major events and personalities of 20th century physics are portrayed through recollections and historiographical works of one of the most prominent figures of European science. A former student of Enrico Fermi, and a leading personality of physical research and science policy in postwar Italy, Edoardo Amaldi devoted part of his career to documenting, both as witness and as historian, some significant moments of 20th century science. The focus of the book is on the European scene, ranging from nuclear research in Rome in the 1930s to particle physics at CERN, and includes biographies of physicists such as Ettore Majorana, Bruno Touschek and Fritz Houtermans.Edoardo Amaldi (Carpaneto, 1908 - Roma, 1989) was one of the leading figures in twentieth century Italian science. He was conferred his degree in physics at Rome University in 1929 and played an active role (as a member of the team of young physicists known as ?the boys of via Panisperna?) in the fundamental research on artificial induced radioactivity and the properties of neutrons, which won the group's leader Enrico Fermi the Nobel Prize for physics in 1938. Following Fermi's departure for the United States in 1938 and the disruption of the original group, Amaldi took upon himself the task of reorganising the research in physics in the difficult situation of post-war Italy. His own research went from nuclear physics to cosmic ray physics, elementary particles and, in later years, gravitational waves. Active research was for him always coupled to a direct involvement as a statesman of science and an organiser: he was the leading figure in the establishment of INFN (National Institute for Nuclear Physics) and has played a major role, as spokesman of the Italian scientific community, in the creation of CERN, the large European laboratory for high energy physics. He also actively supported the formation of a similar trans-national joint venture in space science, which gave birth to the European Space Agency. In these and several other scientific organisations, he was often entrusted with directive responsibilities. In his later years, he developed a keen interest in the history of his discipline. This gave rise to a rich production of historiographic material, of which a significant sample is collected in this volume.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physics Education research is a young field with a strong tradition in many countries. However, it has only recently received full recognition of its specificity and relevance for the growth and improvement of the culture of Physics in contemporary Society for different levels and populations. This may be due on one side to the fact that teaching, therefore education, is part of the job of university researchers and it has often been implicitly assumed that the competences required for good research activity also guarantee good teaching practice. On the other side, and perhaps more important, is the fact that the problems to be afforded in doing research in education are complex problems that require a knowledge base not restricted to the disciplinary physics knowledge but enlarged to include cognitive science, communication science, history and philosophy. The topics discussed here look at some of the facets of the problem by considering the interplay of the development of cognitive models for learning Physics with some reflections on the Physics contents for contemporary and future society with the analysis of teaching strategies and the role of experiments the issue of assessment and cultural aspects. Information is also given on the organizations involved in connecting various aspects of Physics Education: the International Commission on Physics Education, the European Physical Society and the European Physics Education Network.

This book was released on 1992-04-29 with total page 602 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume comprises about forty research papers and essays covering a wide range of subjects in the forefront of contemporary statistical physics. The contributors are renown scientists and leading authorities in several different fields. This book is dedicated to Péter Szépfalusy on the occasion of his sixtieth birthday. Emphasis is placed on his two main areas of research, namely phase transitions and chaotic dynamical systems, as they share common aspects like the applicability of the probabilistic approach or scaling behaviour and universality. Several papers deal with equilibrium phase transitions, critical dynamics, and pattern formation. Also represented are disordered systems, random field systems, growth processes, and neural network. Statistical properties of interacting electron gases, such as the Kondo lattice, the Wigner crystal, and the Hubbard model, are treated. In the field of chaos, Hamiltonian transport and resonances, strange attractors, multifractal characteristics of chaos, and the effect of weak perturbations are discussed. A separate section is devoted to selected mathematical aspects of dynamical systems like the foundation of statistical mechanics, including the problem of ergodicity, and rigorous results on quantum chaos.

Book excerpt: This conference is the first of what is expected to be a sequence of similar conferences on the teaching of the large and important field of condensed matter physics. The objective is to bring together active research workers and teachers for the discussion of frontier topics, and for cooperative efforts to produce, or at least, to plan the production of curricular materials on the topic of the conference. Reports of the lectures by Nobel Laureates, G Binnig and K von Klitzing are included.
