Book excerpt: It is now widely believed in many Western countries that the segregation of students with special educational needs is problematic, and that wherever possible these students should be educated alongside their peers in regular education settings. There has been a general move towards integrating special and regular education into one system that caters for a much wider range of students. But the outcomes in various countries have been very different. This book describes and evaluates these outcomes. The book provides both quantitative and qualitative information, analysing the similarities and differences between integration practices in six Western countries.

Book Synopsis Educational Reform Legislation in the 20th Century by : Gary McCulloch
Download or read book Educational Reform Legislation in the 20th Century written by Gary McCulloch and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-08-29 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much has been written on Education Acts, yet we have abused and neglected them. The history of educational legislation has been written off as ‘Acts and facts’, and the conventional approach to writing about them has been concerned with politics, and especially with the men responsible for them. On the centenary of the 1918 Education Act and Education (Scotland) Act, and the thirtieth anniversary of the 1988 Education Reform Act, we can rightly compare them alongside the other two agenda-setting master-Acts of the 20th century, those of 1902 and 1944. These latter Acts, themselves landmarks of legislation, have each attracted several significant articles that have been published in the British Journal of Educational Studies. Between them, these provide a detailed commentary on the key legislation that has framed the development of UK education that is also open to critique and challenge. The anniversaries of these key Education Acts are also starting points for broader discussion of continuities, changes and contestation in legislation involving the regime of power, control and regulation of education. This can also include consideration of the international context and the relationship between educational and other social legislation and reform.

Book Synopsis The right to learn by : Nicaise, Ides
Download or read book The right to learn written by Nicaise, Ides and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2000-11-08 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evidence has shown that individuals leaving school without qualifications are four times more likely to be unemployed than those with qualifications. Preventing and combating unemployment therefore requires active measures both in the labour market and in the institutions responsible for preparing the future workforce - educational institutions. Attempts to remedy this problem have so far largely neglected children from socially excluded families - one of the most vulnerable groups in education. The right to learn explores a wide range of strategies, both at the policy level and in the field, to improve educational success among such disadvantaged children, taking stock of good practice in a selection of EU member states, chosen to reflect the diversity in systems and policies that currently exist. The book suggests that a number of strategies are effective and feasible. The authors recommend that a sufficiently powerful opinion movement is needed to promote the transfer of experience and action on different levels. They conclude with several suggestions for good practice - not just equal opportunity and equal treatment but also equal outcomes strategies. The right to learn is important reading for teachers, school administrators, educational researchers, policy makers, NGOs, parents' associations, those engaged in youth services and teacher training, and in formulating policies to secure the social integration of the young generation.

Book Synopsis Power and Privatization by : J. Wolfe
Download or read book Power and Privatization written by J. Wolfe and published by Springer. This book was released on 1996-06-07 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book shows that privatization in Britain constitutes a form of state power. After analyzing the historical and ideological background, the study examines how market processes indirectly extend state control by governing participation in state asset sales, regulatory regimes, deregulated policymaking and the marketization of trade unions. Privatizing control remade British democracy. Direct state power has been concentrated and held in reserve, while market processes guide wide areas of routine decision-making. Thus, it is demonstrated that privatization has depoliticized choice and diminished freedom.

It looks at the central players - the children and the teachers - at the classrooms in which they work together; at the curriculum, both implicit and overt; and at the wider community and political context of secondary education. Divided into sections to allow easy access to material of interest, the book covers: * learners * teachers * classrooms * curriculum * schools. Throughout, the reader addresses the crucial issues of effectiveness, quality and achievement and how these will influence the work of the secondary teacher in the coming years.
