Book Synopsis Third World Industrialization in the 1980s by : Raphie Kaplinsky
Download or read book Third World Industrialization in the 1980s written by Raphie Kaplinsky and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-11-26 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1984, this work explores the issues surrounding the industrialisation of the Third World at the beginning of the 1980s. The expectation that Newly Industrialising Countries would facilitate industrial growth via an outward-orientated strategy had begun to be the combination of growing recession, growing protectionism and the diffusion of radical microelectronics-related technical change. In addition, the high indebtedness of developing countries made them increasingly dependent on assistance from the IMF and IBRD, whose policies increased the tendency towards de-industrialisation. The papers in this volume explore all of these issues and their implication for LDC industrial strategy in the 1980s.

This collection of eight essays begins with a piece that constructs a preliminary argument concerning the position of the peasantry in the twin transitions: the first to industrialisation, and the second, towards socialism. Book Synopsis Globalisation and Interdependence in the International Political Economy by : R. J. Barry Jones
Download or read book Globalisation and Interdependence in the International Political Economy written by R. J. Barry Jones and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2013-11-07 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Globalisation and Interdependence in the International Political Economy addresses central developments within the contemporary international system. The notions of interdependence and globalisation that have accompanied the political discourse of 'a new world disorder' are replete with definitional ambiguities, theoretical difficulties and empirical complexities. Barry Jones offers a critical review and analysis of these concepts, their significance and place within the wider debates of international political economy. He argues that contemporary conditions are complex, with regionalising tendencies cross-cutting those of increasing globalisation, and 'national' impulses surviving even in the face of powerful 'internationalising' forces. Future developments, it is concluded, may also be far more uncertain and turbulent than is widely anticipated. Written by a leading authority, this volume is an effective and compelling introduction to the complex study of international political economy.

Book Synopsis International Labour and the Third World by : Rosalind E. Boyd
Download or read book International Labour and the Third World written by Rosalind E. Boyd and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-08-11 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1987, this book focusses on the debate around the international role of the working class and other dominated classes such as the rural and urban poor. The contributions discuss whether Marx’s original version of the revolutionary role of workers can still be sustained. They examine the response of workers to the globalisation of production, to structural unemployment in the industrialized world and to the changing composition of the workforce in the industrialising periphery. The volume questions the historic starting points in the theorization of international labour.
Book Synopsis Indian Industrial Clusters by : Keshab Das
Download or read book Indian Industrial Clusters written by Keshab Das and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents an in-depth analysis of the functional dynamics of Indian industrial clusters which have grown and stayed as hubs of business activity in India, thanks to a large calibrated domestic market for goods. The examples given contribute towards the understanding of theoretical underpinnings of small firm clusters in LDCs and also indicate steps towards effective policy making for SME development in general, and local economic regeneration in LDCs in particular. The industries studied include modern as well as traditional/artisanal sectors which span at least ten Indian states. They provide insights into informality, labour, inter-firm relationship (cooperation and competition), technological and organisational flexibility, and forms of supportive institutional arrangements and nature of linkages with agencies external to the cluster, among other things. This book will be of particular interest to SME practitioners and to students and researchers of economics, business management, regional development, economic geography, industrial sociology and industrial organisation.

Book Synopsis Import Controls And Export-oriented Development by : Richard Luedde-neurath
Download or read book Import Controls And Export-oriented Development written by Richard Luedde-neurath and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-04-02 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to consider the role of import controls in an export-oriented development strategy, and is based on a case study of South Korea, widely regarded as one of the classic success - stories in this -respect. According to accepted wisdom, a strategy of export orientation should be predicated upon a liberal import regime. Trade controls should be avoided, as they give rise to a host of negative consequences. The South Korean experience is often held up as an empirical illustration of how liberal import polices constitute an integral part of export-oriented success.

Book Synopsis Women in the Third World by : Lynne Brydon
Download or read book Women in the Third World written by Lynne Brydon and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 1989 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women in the Third World provides an up-to-date general account and review of research on the roles and status of women in contemporary Third World societies. The book focuses on four major themes of underdevelopment which have particular relevance for gender roles and relations: the household, production, reproduction and policy. These issues are illustrated with material from rural and urban areas in all parts of the Third World. The book summarizes significant ideas and findings. Lynne Brydon and Sylvia Chang have avoided a narrow focus on particular regions and countries to provide a synoptic overview. In addition to being a valuable source of reference for scholars interested in gender and development in the Third World, the book also attempts to pinpoint fundamental aspects of gender inequality which apply to women everywhere. The overriding conclusion of the book is that women's experiences of development are generally negative and that intervention is urgently required to prevent their positions relative to men's deteriorating still further.

Book excerpt: The spectacular rise of the yen in the mid-1980s has unleashed a new wave of imperialism from Japan. Its origins are traced to a series of crises and rivalries between the two great capitalist powers, Japan and the USA. To escape the high yen, Japanese capital is closing down factories at home and shifting them overseas. Some are going to the advanced countries, but the book's main focus is on the search for cheap labour in Southeast Asia to make parts for Japan's two leading industries: motor vehicles and electronics.
