Book excerpt: We live in a world where the loss of sea ice and thawing of coastal grounds in the north, and renewed marine transgression and an increase in the frequency of extreme weather events globally, are becoming commonplace. This volume presents a timely examination of coasts, the geological environment at particular risk, as global warming brings on this new reality. In 23 papers, low lying, mainly siliciclastic coasts are reviewed, described and analysed, under a variety of climates in quasi-stable tectonic settings along passive, trailing-continental edges from Polar Regions to the Tropics. Examples include coast of the Arctic seas, temperate to tropical eastern shores of the Americas, western Portugal, Mediterranean, Persian Gulf, South Africa and Australia. The entire coastal zone (landscape) is considered ranging from geophysical processes and products to biological entities including the adaption of Native People in various climatic zones. Knowledge of the state of the coasts now, and how the coastal plain has evolved since Late Pleistocene, is crucial for any realistic planning for the future.

The principal hypothesis is that stratigraphie successions may be subdivided into discrete sequences bounded by widespread unconformities. There are two parts to this hypothesis. First, it suggests that the driving forces which generate sequences and their bounding unconformities also generate predietable three-dimensional stratigraphies. In re cent years stratigraphie research guided by sequence models has brought about fundamental im provements in our understanding of stratigraphie processes and the controls of basin architecture. Sequence models have provided a powerful framework for mapping and numerieal modeling, enabling the science of stratigraphy to advance with rapid strides. This research has demonstrated the importance of a wide range of processes for the generation of cyclie sequences, including eustasy, tectonics, and orbital forcing of climate change. The main objective of this book is to document the sequence record and to discuss our current state of knowledge about sequence-generating processes.

Continental margins have been the subject of increasing attention in recent years, an interest focused by a body of new data that has provided new insights into their character. At various times in the past we had been approached individually to prepare a basic reference to continental margins; we then proposed to do such a volume jointly. Book excerpt: The magnitude and causes of decadal to century-scale changes in climate are major issues of global concern. The separation of anthropogenically driven change from natural 'baseline' variability within the atmosphere/ocean system is a prerequisite to identifying human impact on global climate. An understanding of past climate variability is therefore a key to predicting future climate change. The sedimentary record of the oceans, seas and lakes is produced by a series of depositional events that occur on seasonal timescales but can rarely be resolved due to mixing of the sediment by bottomdwelling organisms. Where they are preserved, laminated sediments act like tree rings to record these seasonal-scale processes, such as plankton blooms and floods, and provide a uniquely high-resolution record of environmental change. In addition, annually laminated or 'varved' sediment sequences act as geochronometers against which other timescales can be tested. Laminated sediments may therefore be used to develop records of interannual and decadal-scale variability which serve to test models of climate change. The authors cover a range of topics that include strategies for study and techniques of analysis. A series of case studies, dealing with a variety of lacustrine and marine records, illustrates the wide potential of laminated sediments as palaeoclimatic and palaeoceanographic indicators.
