Book Synopsis Bilevel Optimization by : Stephan Dempe
Download or read book Bilevel Optimization written by Stephan Dempe and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-11-23 with total page 679 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2019 marked the 85th anniversary of Heinrich Freiherr von Stackelberg’s habilitation thesis “Marktform und Gleichgewicht,” which formed the roots of bilevel optimization. Research on the topic has grown tremendously since its introduction in the field of mathematical optimization. Besides the substantial advances that have been made from the perspective of game theory, many sub-fields of bilevel optimization have emerged concerning optimal control, multiobjective optimization, energy and electricity markets, management science, security and many more. Each chapter of this book covers a specific aspect of bilevel optimization that has grown significantly or holds great potential to grow, and was written by top experts in the corresponding area. In other words, unlike other works on the subject, this book consists of surveys of different topics on bilevel optimization. Hence, it can serve as a point of departure for students and researchers beginning their research journey or pursuing related projects. It also provides a unique opportunity for experienced researchers in the field to learn about the progress made so far and directions that warrant further investigation. All chapters have been peer-reviewed by experts on mathematical optimization.
Book Synopsis Theoretical and Practical Aspects of Ant Colony Optimization by : Christian Blum
Download or read book Theoretical and Practical Aspects of Ant Colony Optimization written by Christian Blum and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combinatorial optimization problems are of high academical and practical importance. Unfortunately, many of them belong to the class of NP-hard problems and are therefore intractable. In other words, as their dimension increases, the time needed by exact methods to find an optimal solution grows exponentially. Metaheuristics are approximate methods for attacking these problems. An approximate method is a technique that is applied in order to find a good enough solution in a reasonable amount of time. Examples of metaheuristics are simulated annealing, tabu search, evolutionary computation, and ant colony optimization (ACO), the subject of this book. The contributions of this book to ACO research are twofold. First, some new theoretical results are proven that improve our understanding of how ACO works. Second, a new framework for ACO algorithms is proposed that is shown to perform at the state-of-the-art level on some important combinatorial optimization problems such as the k-cardinality tree problem and the group shop scheduling problem, which is a general shop scheduling problem that includes among others the well-known job shop scheduling and the open shop scheduling problems.

The authors involved in this book are among the top researchers in their domain.
Book Synopsis Nature Inspired Cooperative Strategies for Optimization (NICSO 2007) by : Natalio Krasnogor
Download or read book Nature Inspired Cooperative Strategies for Optimization (NICSO 2007) written by Natalio Krasnogor and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-05-14 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biological and natural processes have been a continuous source of inspiration for the sciences and engineering. For instance, the work of Wiener in cybernetics was influenced by feedback control processes observable in biological systems; McCulloch and Pitts description of the artificial neuron was instigated by biological observations of neural mechanisms; the idea of survival of the fittest inspired the field of evolutionary algorithms and similarly, artificial immune systems, ant colony optimisation, automated self-assembling programming, membrane computing, etc. also have their roots in natural phenomena. The second International Workshop on Nature Inspired Cooperative Strategies for Optimization (NICSO), was held in Acireale, Italy, during November 8-10, 2007. The aim for NICSO 2007 was to provide a forum were the latest ideas and state of the art research related to cooperative strategies for problem solving arising from Nature could be discussed. The contributions collected in this book were strictly peer reviewed by at least three members of the international programme committee, to whom we are indebted for their support and assistance. The topics covered by the contributions include several well established nature inspired techniques like Genetic Algorithms, Ant Colonies, Artificial Immune Systems, Evolutionary Robotics, Evolvable Systems, Membrane Computing, Quantum Computing, Software Self Assembly, Swarm Intelligence, etc.

Book Synopsis Applied Optimization by : Ross Baldick
Download or read book Applied Optimization written by Ross Baldick and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-01-18 with total page 859 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The starting point in the formulation of any numerical problem is to take an intuitive idea about the problem in question and to translate it into precise mathematical language. This book provides step-by-step descriptions of how to formulate numerical problems and develops techniques for solving them. A number of engineering case studies motivate the development of efficient algorithms that involve, in some cases, transformation of the problem from its initial formulation into a more tractable form. Five general problem classes are considered: linear systems of equations, non-linear systems of equations, unconstrained optimization, equality-constrained optimization and inequality-constrained optimization. The book contains many worked examples and homework exercises and is suitable for students of engineering or operations research taking courses in optimization. Supplementary material including solutions, lecture slides and appendices are available online at www.cambridge.org/9780521855648.

Book Synopsis Decision Science by : Th. H. B. Hendriks
Download or read book Decision Science written by Th. H. B. Hendriks and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Decision science is the discipline that is concerned with the development and applications of quantitative methods and techniques to support decision making processes. This extensively revised edition of two former versions of the book discusses the general principles and often used optimization techniques such as linear programming, integer programming, dynamic programming, non-linear programming, network theory, simulation and stochastic programming. This book aims to fill in the gap between theory and practice. It discusses the theoretical background of important quantitative methods and techniques as well as how they can be applied to practical decision making problems. Therefore, the modeling process is illustrated with examples of firms, consumers, governments and other non-profit organizations in agriculture related sectors. The authors have used their vast didactical experience to find a proper balance between mathematical exactness, knowledge and readability on the one hand and offer understanding, insights and applicability of the subjects on the other hand. The book is therefore an essential asset in introductory courses on decision science in undergraduate, postgraduate and research programmes.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers contained in this Volume of Proceedings have been collected from an international Workshop entitled 'Mission Design and Implementation of Satellite Constellations' which was held in Toulouse, France, in November 1997. This Workshop represented the first international gathering of the specialists in this currently very active field of research activity. The initiative to organise a Workshop around this theme was conceived during the Congress of the International Astronautical Federation (IAF) in Beijing, China, in October 1996. On that occasion, the IAF explored concepts and possibilities for the conduct of small specialist Workshops and Symposia of current interest. Topical, interesting, and focused themes in the general field of space technology (both theories and applications) will be selected for these Symposia. They aim at offering a dedicated forum at international level for specialists and experts to exchange their views and experiences on recent and future developments within the selected theme. These specialist Workshops and Symposia supplement the comprehensive annual IAF Congresses which cover all aspects of space technology and draw a correspondingly diverse audience.
