Book excerpt: This unique monograph covers recent theoretical and experimental results on the complex character of f electrons in materials containing lanthanides (rare earths) or actinides, such as alpha-cerium and delta-plutonium. It answers the urgent need for a general presentation of the body of experimental and theoretical results presently available in this challenging domain. Some of the fast developing applications of lanthanide and actinide materials are mentioned. Materials containing atoms with an open f shell have electronic and crystalline properties that are controlled by the localized or delocalized character of the f electrons. This book gives a theoretical discussion of the various spectroscopic methods that shed light on the character of the f electrons and on the connection between their localization and the properties of these materials. Part 1 covers the characteristics of the f electrons in atoms and solids and includes a discussion of the properties of lanthanides and actinides in connection with the f electrons. Part 2 describes the various spectroscopic methods that are used to establish the electronic distributions and energies of the states. Examples involve the determination of f electron distributions by high energy spectroscopy methods with separate treatment of the valence and core electrons. Part 3 concentrates on the theoretical treatment of electronic transitions involving f electrons and simulations of the lanthanide spectra, including comparison with the available experimental data. Part 4 discusses the localized or delocalized character of the f electrons in actinides and their compounds, including comparison (analogies & differences) between the 4f and 5f electron materials. This monograph should be of great value for researchers, academics and engineers working in the fields of high energy spectroscopy, electronic and nuclear science and technology, as well as materials involving rare earths and radio-elements.

Book excerpt: Hardly any other discovery of the nineteenth century did have such an impact on science and technology as Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen’s seminal find of the X-rays. X-ray tubes soon made their way as excellent instruments for numerous applications in medicine, biology, materials science and testing, chemistry and public security. Developing new radiation sources with higher brilliance and much extended spectral range resulted in stunning developments like the electron synchrotron and electron storage ring and the freeelectron laser. This handbook highlights these developments in fifty chapters. The reader is given not only an inside view of exciting science areas but also of design concepts for the most advanced light sources. The theory of synchrotron radiation and of the freeelectron laser, design examples and the technology basis are presented. The handbook presents advanced concepts like seeding and harmonic generation, the booming field of Terahertz radiation sources and upcoming brilliant light sources driven by laser-plasma accelerators. The applications of the most advanced light sources and the advent of nanobeams and fully coherent x-rays allow experiments from which scientists in the past could not even dream. Examples are the diffraction with nanometer resolution, imaging with a full 3D reconstruction of the object from a diffraction pattern, measuring the disorder in liquids with high spatial and temporal resolution. The 20th century was dedicated to the development and improvement of synchrotron light sources with an ever ongoing increase of brilliance. With ultrahigh brilliance sources, the 21st century will be the century of x-ray lasers and their applications. Thus, we are already close to the dream of condensed matter and biophysics: imaging single (macro)molecules and measuring their dynamics on the femtosecond timescale to produce movies with atomic resolution.

Book excerpt: With the implementation of intense, short pulsed light sources throughout the last years, the powerful technique of resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) became feasible for a wide range of experiments within femtosecond dynamics in correlated materials and molecules. In this thesis I investigate the potential to bring RIXS into the fluence regime of nonlinear X-ray-matter interactions, especially focusing on the impact of stimulated scattering on RIXS in transition metal systems in a transmission spectroscopy geometry around transition metal L-edges. After presenting the RIXS toolbox and the capabilities of free electron laser light sources for ultrafast intense X-ray experiments, the thesis explores an experiment designed to understand the impact of stimulated scattering on diffraction and direct beam transmission spectroscopy on a CoPd multilayer system. The experiments require short X-ray pulses that can only be generated at free electron lasers (FEL). Here the pulses are not only short, but also very intense, which opens ...

Book excerpt: One of the key ideas in the condensed matter physics at a low energy scale is to treat an interacting many-body electron system in terms of weakly interacting emergent particles, namely elementary excitations. Resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) has emerged as a powerful tool to study elementary excitations, thanks to the exciting instrumentation improvement and the advent of X-ray synchrotron radiation facilities. By tuning the incident X-ray photon energy to the resonance condition of a specific element, RIXS can resonantly enhance the scattering cross section between the incident photon and the elementary excitation in the material, enabling element-specific measurements. In this dissertation, we investigated magnetic excitations in the recently discovered superconducting infinite-layer nickelate thin films. Besides a similar crystal structure, the infinite-layer nickelate is nominally isoelectronic to the high temperature cuprate superconductors. At this early stage, it is important to experimentally study the similarities and differences between cuprates and nickelates, particularly the respective electronic and magnetic structures. Here, by utilizing the high-resolution RIXS, we found that the parent compound of the infinite-layer nickelate is not a charge-transfer material, like cuprates. Instead, it is probably closer to a Mott compound with an additional coupling with rare-earth metallic states. Furthermore, we also found a branch of dispersive magnetic excitations with a bandwidth of approximately 200 meV in the parent compound nickelates. Although these modes are significantly damped, they are reminiscent of the spin-wave of strongly coupled, anti-ferromagnetically aligned spins on a square lattice. Upon doping, the spectral weight and energy decrease slightly, while the modes become overdamped. The dispersion, doping dependence, damping effect of the magnetic excitation, and the added complexity due to the presence of the rare-earth metallic pockets, together with its comparison with the magnetic excitation in cuprates, will be discussed.

Book excerpt: Here, we develop a phenomenological theory to predict the characteristic features of the momentumdependent scattering amplitude in resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at the energy scale of the superconducting gap in iron-based super-conductors. Taking into account all relevant orbital states as well as their specific content along the Fermi surface we evaluate the charge and spin dynamical structure factors for the compounds LaOFeAs and LiFeAs, based on tight-binding models which are fully consistent with recent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) data. We find a characteristic intensity redistribution between charge and spin dynamical structure factors which discriminates between sign-reversing and sign-preserving quasiparticle excitations. Consequently, our results show that RIXS spectra can distinguish between s± and s++ wave gap functions in the singlet pairing case. In addition, we find that an analogous intensity redistribution at small momenta can reveal the presence of a chiral p-wave triplet pairing.

Book excerpt: After 30 years of extensive scrutiny from their discovery in 1986, copper oxide high-temperature superconductors remain one of the most enigmatic and captivating platforms for emergent many-body phases in condensed matter physics. Understanding the emergent physics of collective electronic orders and excitations across the cuprate phase diagram is a key to decode the puzzle of high-temperature superconductivity and how it arises from the strongly correlated Mott state. With the advance of soft X-ray instrumentations during the last decade, resonant elastic and inelastic X-ray scattering (REXS and RIXS) have rapidly established as highly sensitive and versatile probes of electronic orders and excitations in quantum materials. Using REXS at the Cu-L3 resonance, we investigated the evolution of momentum-space topology of charge correlation in electron-doped cuprates T'-(Nd,Pr)2CuO4[subscript delta] as a function of carrier doping. We revealed that, upon doping the parent Mott insulator, charge correlations first emerge in the form of rotationally-symmetric spatial density modulations, which evolve to more conventional long-ranged checkerboard order at higher doping levels. Our charge susceptibility calculations uncover a close link between the topology of charge correlations and the underlying fermiology in electron-doped cuprates and also suggest that the nature of charge correlations changes from locally incoherent charge ripples to a long-ranged broken symmetry state upon carrier doping. Using RIXS, we developed an experimental method to disentangle various electronic excitations in cuprates based on their nature. Our approach is built on the tensorial nature of the RIXS scattering matrix, whose form is imprinted onto the angular dependence of RIXS signal. Applying this method to prototypical magnetically-ordered and superconducting cuprates T'-(Nd,Pr)2CuO4[subscript -][subscript delta] and YBa2Cu3O6.75, we resolved the charge, spin, and orbital character of elastic scattering, (para-)magnon/bimagnon modes, and higher-energy intraband orbital excitations.

Book excerpt: Measurements of spin excitations are essential for an understanding of spin-mediated pairing for superconductivity; and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) provides a considerable opportunity to probe high-energy spin excitations. However, whether RIXS correctly measures the collective spin excitations of doped superconducting cuprates remains under debate. Here we demonstrate distinct Raman- and fluorescence-like RIXS excitations of Bi1.5Pb0.6Sr1.54CaCu2O8+[delta]. Combining photon-energy and momentum dependent RIXS measurements with theoretical calculations using exact diagonalization provides conclusive evidence that the Raman-like RIXS excitations correspond to collective spin excitations, which are magnons in the undoped Mott insulators and evolve into paramagnons in doped superconducting compounds. In contrast, the fluorescence-like shifts are due primarily to the continuum of particle-hole excitations in the charge channel. Our results show that under the proper experimental conditions RIXS indeed can be used to probe paramagnons in doped high-Tc cuprate superconductors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phonons contribute to resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) as a consequence of the coupling between electronic and lattice degrees of freedom. Unlike other techniques that are sensitive to electron-phonon interactions, RIXS can give access to momentum dependent coupling constants. Information about the dispersion of the electron-phonon interaction is highly desirable in the context of understanding anisotropic conventional and unconventional superconductivity. We considered the phonon contribution to RIXS from the theoretical point of view. In contrast to previous studies, we emphasize the role of the core-hole lattice coupling. Our model, with parameters obtained from first principles, shows that even in the case of a deep core-hole, RIXS probes exciton-phonon coupling rather than a direct electron-phonon coupling. This difference leads to quantitative and qualitative deviations from the interpretation of the implied electron-phonon coupling from the standard view expressed in the literature. Thus, our objective is to develop a rigorous approach to quantify electron-phonon coupling within the context of RIXS measurements. The ability to accurately reproduce experimental results from first-principles calculations, without recourse to adjustable parameters, should be viewed as the ultimate test of a proper understanding of the phonon contribution to RIXS.We start by considering only the core-hole--phonon interaction within the context of X-ray photoemission spectroscopy. We combine an ab initio calculation of the real-space response function with many-body Green's functions techniques to reproduce the vibrational side-bands in SiX4 (X=H, F) molecules. The approach we developed is suitable for application to crystalline materials. We next consider the phonon contribution to X-ray absorption spectra. Unlike the charged excitations generated by X-ray photoemission, X-ray absorption creates a neutral excitation that we approximate as a core-hole and an excited electron. We first solved the electronic part of the problem on the level of the Bethe-Salpeter equation and then dressed the resulting 2-particle excitonic quasiparticle with the exciton-phonon interactions using the cumulant ansatz. The viability of this methodology was tested by calculating the N K-edge XAS of the N2 molecule and the O K-edge of acetone. The resulting vibronic spectra agreed favorably with experimental results. Finally, we construct a hybrid formulation of the RIXS cross section that preserves explicit summation over a small number of final states, but replaces the summation over intermediate states, which might be enormously expensive, with a Green's function. We develop an expansion of the Green's function and derive both analytically exact (in the no-recoil limit) and approximate solutions. The formalism was again tested on the O K-edge of acetone and agrees well with the experiment. To provide an outlook towards future work, we discuss application of the developed formalism to crystalline materials.
