Download or read book Molecular Mechanisms of Water Transport Across Biological Membranes written by Wilfred D. Stein and published by Gulf Professional Publishing. This book was released on 2002-04-02 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International Review of Cytology presents current advances and comprehensive reviews in cell biology--both plant and animal. Authored by some of the foremost scientists in the field, each volume provides up-to-date information and directions for future research. This volume looks at water movements from a wide range of levels. It examines how water interacts with the major components of the cell, including proteins and lipids. It discusses how water moves across cell membranes by diffusion, how it is chanelled across these membranes or, in certain cases, pumped across, and how water movements are controlled. This book demonstrates how water and ion movements are closely linked in order to provide a better understanding of their behavior. *Essential Physical chemistry of water at biological interfaces *Up-to-date reviews of water behavior in cells *Water in integrated systems *Current information on water channels across membranes
Book Synopsis Water Transport and Biological Membranes by : Gheorghe Benga
Download or read book Water Transport and Biological Membranes written by Gheorghe Benga and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-05-04 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main purpose of this book is to provide in-depth presentation of physical techniques for measuring water transport and their applications to a variety of biological membranes, from model membrane systems to cell membranes, and then from isolated cells to multicellular barrier systems, such as epithelia or even whole organisms. This survey of water transport in such a broad range of membrane systems will hopefully contribute to understanding of the structure-function relationships and molecular mechanisms of water permeation. Moreover, the description of various techniques, together with a review of literature will enable the readers to assess whether a technique would be useful in helping to solve his or her particular problem of research and will also expand their competence in these techniques. The book consists of two volumes.
Book Synopsis Transport Across Single Biological Membranes by : D.C. Tosteson

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second Volume in the series on Membrane Transport in Biology contains a group of essays on transport across single biological membranes separating the inside and outside of cells or organelles. We have not attempted to include material on all types of plasma and intracellular membranes, but rather have emphasized structures which have been studied relatively thoroughly. Four chapters describe transport of different types of molecules and ions across the plasma membranes of mammalian red cells. Two essays concern the excitable membranes of nerve and muscle cells while the remaining four chapters treat transport across several types of intracellular membranes. Water makes up more than two-thirds of the mass of most living cells. The transport of water between the inside and outside of cells and organelles is important for the function of these structures. As a result of investigations in many laboratories over the past four decades, our picture of the water permea bility of the red cell membranes is rather detailed when compared to the water permeability of other biological membranes. In Chapter 1, R. I. Macey describes this picture and also considers the permeability of red cell membranes to non electrolytes, including metabolic substrates such as sugars, amino acids, purines and nucleosides.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a general agreement that investigating the permeability characterises of biological membranes not only has intrinsic value but could also contribute to our understanding of the function and structure of membranes. The main purpose of this book is to provide in-depth presentations of physical techniques for measuring water transport and their applications to a variety of biological membranes, from model membrane systems to cell membranes, and then from isolated cells to multicellular barrier systems, such as epithelia or even whole organisms. Book Synopsis Membranes and Transport by : Anthony N. Martonosi
Download or read book Membranes and Transport written by Anthony N. Martonosi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-01-21 with total page 679 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is a collection of short reviews on membranes and transport. It portrays the field as a mosaic of bright little pieces, which are interesting in themselves but gain full signif icance when viewed as a whole. Traditional boundaries are set aside and biochemists, biophysicists, physiologists, and cell biologists enter into a natural discourse. The principal motivation of this work was to ease the problems of communication that arose from the explosive growth and interdisciplinary character of membrane research. In these volumes we hope to provide a readily available comprehensive source of critical information covering many of the exciting, recent developments on the structure, biosyn thesis, and function of biological membranes in microorganisms, animal cells, and plants. The 182 reviews contributed by leading authorities should enable experts to check up on recent developments in neighboring areas of research, allow teachers to organize material for membrane and transport courses, and give advanced students the opportunity to gain a broad view of the topic. Special attention was given to developments that are expected to open new areas of investigation. The result is a kaleidoscope of facts, viewpoints, theories, and techniques, which radiates the excitement of this important field. Publication of these status reports every few years should enable us to follow progress in an interesting and easygoing format. I am grateful to the authors, to Plenum Publishing Corporation, and to several of my colleagues for their thoughtful suggestions and enthusiastic cooperation, which made this work possible.
