Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first DIMACS special year, held during 1989-1990, was devoted to discrete and computational geometry. More than 200 scientists, both long- and short-term visitors, came to DIMACS to participate in the special year activities. Among the highlights were six workshops at Rutgers and Princeton Universities that defined the focus for much of the special year. The workshops addressed the following topics: geometric complexity, probabilistic methods in discrete and computational geometry, polytopes and convex sets, arrangements, and algebraic and practical issues in geometric computation. This volume presents some of the results growing out of the workshops and the special year activities. Containing both survey articles and research papers, this collection presents an excellent overview of significant recent progress in discrete and computational geometry. The diversity of these papers demonstrate how geometry continues to provide a vital source of ideas in theoretical computer science and discrete mathematics as well as fertile ground for interaction and simulation between the two disciplines.

This book was released on 1995-11-30 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The geometrical theory of nonlinear differential equations originates from classical works by S. Lie and A. Bäcklund. It obtained a new impulse in the sixties when the complete integrability of the Korteweg-de Vries equation was found and it became clear that some basic and quite general geometrical and algebraic structures govern this property of integrability. Nowadays the geometrical and algebraic approach to partial differential equations constitutes a special branch of modern mathematics. In 1993, a workshop on algebra and geometry of differential equations took place at the University of Twente (The Netherlands), where the state-of-the-art of the main problems was fixed. This book contains a collection of invited lectures presented at this workshop. The material presented is of interest to those who work in pure and applied mathematics and especially in mathematical physics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the reviews: "This book offers a coherent treatment, at the graduate textbook level, of the field that has come to be known in the last decade or so as computational geometry. ... ... The book is well organized and lucidly written; a timely contribution by two founders of the field. It clearly demonstrates that computational geometry in the plane is now a fairly well-understood branch of computer science and mathematics. It also points the way to the solution of the more challenging problems in dimensions higher than two." #Mathematical Reviews#1 "... This remarkable book is a comprehensive and systematic study on research results obtained especially in the last ten years. The very clear presentation concentrates on basic ideas, fundamental combinatorial structures, and crucial algorithmic techniques. The plenty of results is clever organized following these guidelines and within the framework of some detailed case studies. A large number of figures and examples also aid the understanding of the material. Therefore, it can be highly recommended as an early graduate text but it should prove also to be essential to researchers and professionals in applied fields of computer-aided design, computer graphics, and robotics." #Biometrical Journal#2

Book excerpt: Mathematical methods has been a dominant research path in computational vision leading to a number of areas like ?ltering, segmentation, motion analysis and stereo reconstruction. Within such a branch visual perception tasks can either be addressed through the introduction of application-driven geometric ?ows or through the minimization of problem-driven cost functions where their lowest potential corresponds to image understanding. The 3rd IEEE Workshop on Variational, Geometric and Level Set Methods focused on these novel mathematical techniques and their applications to c- puter vision problems. To this end, from a substantial number of submissions, 30 high-quality papers were selected after a fully blind review process covering a large spectrum of computer-aided visual understanding of the environment. The papers are organized into four thematic areas: (i) Image Filtering and Reconstruction, (ii) Segmentation and Grouping, (iii) Registration and Motion Analysis and (iiii) 3D and Reconstruction. In the ?rst area solutions to image enhancement, inpainting and compression are presented, while more advanced applications like model-free and model-based segmentation are presented in the segmentation area. Registration of curves and images as well as multi-frame segmentation and tracking are part of the motion understanding track, while - troducing computationalprocessesinmanifolds, shapefromshading, calibration and stereo reconstruction are part of the 3D track. We hope that the material presented in the proceedings exceeds your exp- tations and will in?uence your research directions in the future. We would like to acknowledge the support of the Imaging and Visualization Department of Siemens Corporate Research for sponsoring the Best Student Paper Award.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of papers constitutes a wide-ranging survey of recent developments in differential geometry and its interactions with other fields, especially partial differential equations and mathematical physics. This area of mathematics was the subject of a special program at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton during the academic year 1979-1980; the papers in this volume were contributed by the speakers in the sequence of seminars organized by Shing-Tung Yau for this program. Both survey articles and articles presenting new results are included. The articles on differential geometry and partial differential equations include a general survey article by the editor on the relationship of the two fields and more specialized articles on topics including harmonic mappings, isoperimetric and Poincaré inequalities, metrics with specified curvature properties, the Monge-Arnpere equation, L2 harmonic forms and cohomology, manifolds of positive curvature, isometric embedding, and Kraumlhler manifolds and metrics. The articles on differential geometry and mathematical physics cover such topics as renormalization, instantons, gauge fields and the Yang-Mills equation, nonlinear evolution equations, incompleteness of space-times, black holes, and quantum gravity. A feature of special interest is the inclusion of a list of more than one hundred unsolved research problems compiled by the editor with comments and bibliographical information.
