Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book presents the results of an ethnographic study examining the post-deinstitutionalized organization and provision of acute mental health care in Italy. While the achievements of the “Basaglia law” which imposed the closure of psychiatric hospitals in Italy in 1978 have been well-documented, this book sheds fresh light on its aftermath and possible continuing influence. The author examines two Italian regions – Piedmont and Friuli Venezia Giulia (internationally known to be the first Italian region to close down asylums) – respectively as representatives of the ‘restraint’ and ‘no-restraint’ models. Within each context, participant observation and discursive interviews have been conducted in Mental Health Centres (CSM) and acute psychiatric wards (SPDC) to explore care and coercive practices, as well as notions of ‘good care’ and values embedded in everyday working activities of these services. Situated suggestions for possible improvement of today’s acute mental health care are also proposed. This book offers a novel ethnography of mental health care in the Italian context that will appeal in particular to practitioners and scholars in the fields of critical mental health, cross-cultural psychology, the history of psychiatry and the sociology of health.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current theory of corporate social responsibility (CSR) is developing along three interwoven lines - oral, social, and environmental. Although everybody recognizes that although CSR is of growing concern in a globalized economy, it being at the top of the board of director's agenda and also good for business, there is no sign of consensus on its rules, structures, or procedures. Now, this collection of essays by leading jurists, businesspeople, and academics takes a giant step toward a more cohesive and durable set of principles that can contribute to a cleaner environment and a better society while respecting and protecting the interests of all stakeholders.

Book excerpt: With unique scholarly analysis and practical discussion, this book provides a comprehensive introduction to the relationship between environmental protection and human rights being formalized into law in many legal systems. This book instructs on environmental techniques and procedures that assist in the protection of human rights. The text provides cogent guidance on a growing international jurisprudence on the promotion and protection of human rights in relation to the environment that has been developed by international and regional human rights bodies and tribunals. It explores a rich body of case law that continues to develop within states on the environmental dimension of the rights to life, to health, and to public participation and access to information. Five compelling contemporary case studies are included that implicate human rights and the environment, ranging from large dam projects to the creation of a new human right to a clean environment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the delta region of Nigeria, women seeking HIV care face a plethora of deeply gendered inequalities. As a result, HIV-positive women are often unable to use the treatment schemes that are seemingly available to them. Pathologies of Patriarchy brings together a geographic analysis of gendered inequalities with practical implementation questions concerning the limits of current global health programming. This book is an experiential analysis of HIV treatment programs that includes first-hand accounts of how female patients explain and cope with the poor access to and the inconsistencies in the delivery of HIV service care that complicates their adherence to treatment, as well as the complex power relations they navigate daily. Eloho Ese Basikoro also addresses the failures of policymakers who talk about gender mainstreaming but fail to deliver sustainable health services for disenfranchised women suffering from the social stigma and alienation associated with seropositivity. This inter-regional study is of great interdisciplinary interest to a wide variety of scholars and policymakers, whether they are researching gendered inequality from a geographical, anthropological, or global health perspective or are interested in broader concerns about development and inequality in sub-Saharan Africa.
