Lake water quality issues related to algal blooms is a serious problem in basins with abundant agricultural lands causing harmful effects to freshwater ecosystems such as pollution of beaches, taste and odor problems in drinking water, depletion of oxygen levels causing fish kills and the issue of water exceeding safe drinking water standards. Developing monitoring techniques using various water quality indicators of algal blooms is crucial. In this project, remote sensing and field sampling methods were employed to assess the state of water quality of two small lakes, Lake Bloomington and Evergreen Lake, in Central Illinois. Water samples were collected from selected locations from the lakes to test for various water quality variables including nitrate, phosphorus and chlorophyll a. An exo sonde instrument and secchi disk was used to measure additional water quality parameters such as turbidity, secchi depth, and temperature. Concurrent satellite images obtained from Sentinel-2 with flyover with ℗ł5 days were processed and analyzed, and the results were compared with field sampling data. Single and multiple pixel analyses were conducted on various algorithms such as Bottom-of-Atmosphere (BOA), Maximum Chlorophyll Index (MCI), and band ratios. These algorithms were tested to identify the best algorithm for estimating water quality parameters using satellite data for the two lakes. A regression analysis was conducted to derive a linear model which was used to create water quality indicator maps that showed the spatial pattern of algae in the lakes. From the results of the research, Lake Bloomington was more turbid and had higher concentrations of chlorophyll a than Evergreen Lake. Except for band ratio of B1/B2 of Sentinel-2 data, a poor regression relationship between satellite and field water quality values was observed for Lake Bloomington. This poor relationship could be due to the high turbidity of the lake. Evergreen Lake, on the other hand, showed a stronger relationship between satellite values and chlorophyll a. Generally, spatial analysis reveals that chlorophyll a distribution was heterogeneous, and it increased from downstream areas to upstream areas.

Researchers have demonstrated that lake clarity can be successfully monitored through the analysis of remote sensing. Evaluating satellite imagery, as a means of water quality detection, offers a practical way to assess lake clarity across large areas, enabling researchers to conduct comparisons on a large spatial scale. Landsat data offers free access to frequent and recurring satellite images. This allows researchers the ability to make temporal comparisons regarding lake water quality. Lake water quality is related to turbidity which is associated with clarity. Lake clarity is a strong indicator of lake health and overall water quality. The possibility of detecting and monitoring lake clarity using Landsat8 mean brightness values is discussed in this report. Lake clarity is analyzed in three different reservoirs for this study; Brookeville, Geist, and Eagle Creek. In-situ measurements obtained from Brookeville Reservoir were used to calibrate reflectance from Landsat 8's Operational Land Imager (OLI) satellite. Results indicated a correlation between turbidity and brightness values, which are highly correlated in algal dominated lakes.

Monitoring lakes regularly is necessary to understand their dynamics and the drivers of these dynamics to support effective management. Remote sensing by satellite sensors offers a significant opportunity to increase the spatiotemporal coverage of environmental monitoring programs for inland waters. Lake color is a water quality attribute that can be remotely sensed and is independent of the sensor specifications and water type. In this study we used the Multispectral Imager (MSI) on two Sentinel-2 satellites to determine the color of water of 170 Italian lakes during two periods in 2017. Overall, most of the lakes appeared blue in spring and green-yellow in late summer, and in particular, we confirm a blue-water status of the largest lakes in the subalpine ecoregion. The color and its seasonality are consistent with characteristics determined by geomorphology and primary drivers of water quality. This suggests that information about the color of the lakes can contribute to synoptic assessments of the trophic status of lakes. Further ongoing research efforts are focused to extend the mapping over multiple years.

This study focuses on utilizing the satellite remote sensing to monitor the water quality of Lake Simcoe, Ontario, Canada, which has been suffering from the overload of Total Phosphorus (TP) and therefore eutrophication for decades. The data employed in this study includes 22 cloud-free Landsat 5 TM images, as well as the nearly simultaneous in-situ data from 15 observation stations on the lake. Compared to the generally used model, an improved model is developed in this study to estimate the Secchi Disk Transparency (SDT), a parameter for water clarity measurements, using the TM images. Models based on different band combinations are compared to estimate the chlorophyll-a (chl-a) concentration. The results of these estimations are validated using the in-situ data by the linear regression analysis, and the accuracies are measured by the correlation coefficients R2. The results reveal that the improved SDT model provides higher prediction accuracies than the general model when applied to 68.2% (15 out of 22) of the images. The majority of the SDT predictions show high R2, whereas some of the estimated chl-a concentrations have weak relationships with the in-situ data. The possible reasons for this are the geo-location of stations, as well as the influences of chl-a and Dissolved Organic Carbon (DOC). The resultant concentration maps indicate that the eutrophic water is normally distributed at the near-shore areas and the northeastern part of Lake Simcoe. In addition, the southern Cook's Bay has always been suffering from an extremely serious water quality problem even until now. Meanwhile, the water quality of the southwestern part of Lake Simcoe is much better than the other parts of this lake. The results also show that the water quality of Lake Simcoe was at its worst in August and September for the past 22 years while it was much better in the other sampling seasons. According to the trend of the monthly averaged SDT, on an overall scale, the SDT dropped from 1980 to 1982 and then kept relatively stable until the fall of 1992, followed by a gradual increase until 2000, and then stayed constant until the summer of 2008. The chl-a concentration reveals an inverse trend, i.e., the higher the chl-a concentration, the more turbid the water.

Book excerpt: The thermal and dynamic properties of water bodies are important factors affecting the structure of the atmospheric boundary layer which stores and transports energy and mass. The storage and heat transfer of lakes play an essential role in energy and water exchanges with the atmosphere. At high latitudes, the effects of lake ice on climate mostly occur at the local/regional scale, with the degree of influence dependent on the magnitude, timing, location, duration of ice cover and the size of the water body. Ground-based lake temperature and ice observations have been used to investigate the role of lakes in the weather and climate, and the response of lakes to climate. However, in the last two to three decades, it has been observed that the number of ground-based observations, lake ice in particular, has been decreasing dramatically in several countries across the northern hemisphere. In this context, remotely sensed earth observations represent a practical tool in support of the scientific and operational modeling communities, permitting to monitor Lake Surface Water Temperature (LSWT) and ice cover. Data assimilation methods have been used widely to solve the initial value problem in numerical weather prediction (NWP) models. There is a variety of users and applications of space-borne observations in NWP systems; however, not much attention has been paid on the assimilation of remotely-sensed LSWT data in pre-operational NWP environments for improvement of the weather forecast using the optimal interpolation method. This thesis aimed to demonstrate how retrieved remotely-sensed LSWT observations can improve the representation of lake-atmosphere interactions in NWP models. More specifically, LSWT observations were used to improve the representation of lake surface state in the High Resolution Limited Area Model (HIRLAM), a three-dimensional numerical weather prediction (NWP) model. To attain this goal, satellite-derived LSWT observations from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and the Along-Track Scanning Radiometer (AATSR) sensors onboard the Terra/Aqua and ENVISAT satellites, respectively, were first evaluated against in-situ measurements collected by the Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE) for a selection of large to medium-size lakes during the open-water season. Results show a good agreement between MODIS and in-situ measurements from 22 Finnish lakes, with a mean bias of -1.13 °C determined over five open water seasons (2007-2011). Evaluation of MODIS during an overlapping period (2007-2009) with the AATSR-L2 product currently distributed by the European Space Agency (ESA) shows a mean bias error of -0.93 °C for MODIS and a warm mean bias of 1.08 °C for AATSR-L2. Two additional LSWT retrieval algorithms were applied to produce more accurate AATSR products. The algorithms use ESA's AATSR-L1B brightness temperature product to generate new L2 products: one based on Key et al. (1997) and the other on Prata (2002) with a finer resolution water mask than used in the creation of the AATSR-L2 product distributed by ESA. The accuracies of LSWT retrievals are improved with the Key and Prata algorithms with biases of 0.78 °C and -0.11 °C, respectively, compared to the original AATSR-L2 product (3.18 °C). The impact of remotely-sensed LSWT observations in the analysis of lake surface state of HIRLAM forecasting system was then investigated. Data assimilation experiments were performed with the HIRLAM model. Selected thermal remote-sensing LSWT observations provided by MODIS and AATSR sensors were included into the assimilation. The domain of the experiments, which focused on two winters (2010-2011 and 2011-2012), covered northern Europe. Validation of the resulting objective analyses against independent observations demonstrated that the description of the lake surface state can be improved by the introduction of space-borne LSWT observations, compared to the result of pure prognostic parameterizations or assimilation of the available limited number of in-situ lake temperature observations. Further development of the data assimilation methods and solving of several practical issues were found to be necessary in order to fully benefit from the space-borne observations of lake surface state for the improvement of the operational weather forecast. Lastly, the lake-specific autocorrelation function based on LSWT remotely sensed observations was approximated in HIRLAM. A new autocorrelation function of lake pairs was approximated and compared against the original function utilized in current version of HIRLAM to investigate potential improvements demonstrated through HIRLAM sensitivity experiments. The autocorrelation function is calculated based on distance and lake depth differences for each lake pairs. Results show that large lakes are more sensitive to the impact of the autocorrelation. These results also suggest that the high concentrated observations can improve the enhanced result; however, ground-based observations of LSWT are barely available for NWP applications. Overall, results from this thesis clearly demonstrate the benefits of assimilating space-borne LSWT observations into a weather forecasting system such as HIRLAM, and that comprehensive assimilation of LSWT observations can improve NWP results.

The same techniques are applied to the hyperspectral sensor MERIS with the aid of the MODIS ocean color bands to generate fused images with enhanced spatial, temporal, and spectral properties. The performance of the data mining models derived using fused hyperspectral and fused multispectral data are quantified using four statistical indices. The second task compared traditional two-band models against more powerful data mining models for TOC and microcystin prediction. The use of IDFM is illustrated for monitoring microcystin concentrations in Lake Erie (large lake), and it is applied for TOC monitoring in Harsha Lake (small lake). Analysis confirmed that data mining methods excelled beyond two-band models at accurately estimating TOC and microcystin concentrations in lakes, and the more detailed spectral reflectance data offered by hyperspectral sensors produced a noticeable increase in accuracy for the retrieval of water quality parameters.
