Although transparency is a concept largely associated with the modern movement, the use of glazed components, and twentieth-century architectural discourse, spatial transparency is a form of depth awareness through intermediate domains, takes place through the interstitial fabric of a structure, and occurs when several consecutive domains are spatially and visually connected. These immersive environments invite active participation, not as one-way communication but as a series of visual and experiential exchanges, interdependencies, and relationships. Divided into four parts, the book examines spatial transparency in massive opaque constructions, light constructions, glass assemblies, and hybrid systems. It analyzes both the phenomenon of visual connectivity and continuity through intermediate spaces, and spatial transparency’s capacity for promoting and enabling graded, interflowing environmental transactions. Using historical and contemporary examples, it catalogs some of the most common and recurring configurations that manifest these characteristics. Over 20 international case studies from the Americas to Japan are presented to argue that environments exist in porous mediums and that by studying the openings, voids, light, and materials of layered and/or permeable organizations, important insights about space making can be revealed. Written for students and academics, this book explores various expressions of spatial transparency in architecture and helps connect their abstract ideas with significant built works, analytical drawings, and comparison charts.

Book excerpt: Architectural discourse on transparency has centered on the idea of layering spaces, light construction, and perceptions of different spatial relationships and has a long history from modernism to the present. This thesis proposes to question received notions of glass as a transparent material and instead focus on its possibilities as a reflective material. The thesis is an exploration of a specific material property, reflectivity, and the effects it has on architecture in terms of experiencing a space and defining a space and redefining perceptions of one's self within space. Architectural projects often draw from materials and their specific properties to create certain forms or types of spaces. Reflectivity as a material property operates on the extreme end of the spectrum of transparency. Transparency is a way of introducing layers of space and juxtaposing spaces on top of one another. Reflectivity, on the other hand, has the special property of recreating an image almost exactly but one that is dependent as an effect on the actual eye of the viewer. The location of the viewer in relation to a space and a mirrored surface becomes a relationship that can be highly controlled to create a specific effect or experience. The geometry of the mirrored surface and the geometry of the space being reflected can also be carefully controlled and designed to produce particular effects. Mirrors are unique in that they provide an opportunity where spatial relationships may not be as solidly defined as what is normally experienced. The architecture latent within the reflected image of a mirrored surface can appear to operate under its own laws of physics. There can be an ambiguous quality to a space that detracts from the more concrete materialization of the architecture. Normally, we can readily define our position within a space but the mirror distorts our perception of space beyond cognition addressing the psychological aspects of experiencing a spatial architecture.

As the use of glass in architecture developed formally, the understanding of how to design with this transparent material evolved. As glass technology improved and new applications were conceived, the implications of literal and phenomenal transparency grew. How one perceived of the effects that transparency had on space was subject to the ability of one's awareness of that which was perceived. This thesis contributes to the discussion of how glass and its current technological state contribute to new and alternative ways to experience and understand space. It is not a discussion of every way that glass can be used but rather how its transparency, combined with it's innate material qualities, gives way to phenomena. Today, there are a variety of materials that possess the quality of transparency - glass, plastic, fabrics etc. Those materials also have different material properties that contribute to the production of other phenomenal effects. By focusing on the manipulation of one's perception of these phenomena, a new experience of space is produced. The theories studied in this thesis are exercised in the creation of an Urban Sanctuary in downtown Cincinnati. Glass has a long-standing tie to religious architecture making it a fitting material choice. This coupled with the notion of phenomenal transparency will invert the introspective and reflective nature of the sanctuary, revealing the functions to the community. By using glass to push the boundary of this idea it is possible create a new vocabulary for the materials use and the privacy and publicity it may achieve. The juxtaposition of transparency with the monastic typology creates a vibration that exploits that which is perceived.
