Among the various spatial light modulator (SLM) technologies, e.g., liquid crystal (LC), magneto-optic, deformable mirror, multiple quantum well, and acoustic-optic Bragg cells, the ones based on liquid crystal on silicon (LCoS) have been gaining importance and relevance in a plethora of optical contexts, namely, in telecom, metrology, optical storage, and microdisplays. Their implementation in telecom has enabled the development of high-capacity optical components in system functionalities as multiplexing/demultiplexing, switching and optical signal processing. This technology combines the unique light-modulating properties of LC with the high-performance silicon complementary metal oxide semiconductor properties. Different types of modulation, i.e., phase, amplitude or combination of the two, can be achieved. In this book chapter, we address the most relevant applications of phase-only LCoS SLM for optical telecom purposes and the employment of SLM technology in photonic integrated circuits (PICs) (e.g., field-programmable silicon photonic (SiP) circuits and integrated SLM application to create versatile reconfigurable elements). Furthermore, a new SLM-based flexible coupling platform with applications in spatial division multiplexing (SDM) systems (e.g., to efficiently excite different cores in MCF) and characterization/testing of photonic integrated processors will be described.

Book excerpt: Limitations of bus-based interconnections related to scalability, latency, bandwidth, and power consumption for supporting the related huge number of on-chip resources result in a communication bottleneck. These challenges can be efficiently addressed with the implementation of a network-on-chip (NoC) system. This book gives a detailed analysis of various on-chip communication architectures and covers different areas of NoCs such as potentials, architecture, technical challenges, optimization, design explorations, and research directions. In addition, it discusses current and future trends that could make an impactful and meaningful contribution to the research and design of on-chip communications and NoC systems.

Book excerpt: This thesis presents the operational theory and engineering numerical models for the operation of a schlieren-like Fourier optical system, used to read out a phase-only spatial light modulator (SLM) for phase to intensity conversion. The computational model, based on discrete cosine transforms, is lightweight enough to be run on standard desktop computers, and flexible enough to allow engineering simulations of arbitrary pixel phase profiles, including empirical datasets. We apply these models to case studies of the design and simulation of pixel geometries and readout system designs for a MEMS-based membrane mirror spatial light modulator (MMSLM), for use as a projection display at a range of visible and infrared wavelengths. Output images, contrast curves and pixel uniformities are simulated for each case study. Simulation results indicate the use of a zero-order blocking spatial filter when high contrast is prioritized, while a zero-order passing spatial filter provides enhanced uniformity of arrays of many pixels. Key engineering rules of thumb and a sample design flow are provided for the design of future phase-contrast projection systems.

Book excerpt: Micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) have revolutionized computation power due to their capabilities to develop advanced micro-architectures. MEMS technologies illustrate the potential for many applications in the field of tissue engineering, regenerative medicine, and life sciences. The fabrication of tissue models integrates the multidisciplinary field of life sciences and engineering. Presently, monolayer cell cultures are frequently used to investigate potential anticancer agents. These monolayer cultures give limited feedback on the effects of the microenvironment on chemotherapeutic and the heterogeneity of the tumor. A microenvironment, which mimics that of the cancerous tissue, will eliminate the limitations of the traditional mainstays of cancer research. The fabrication of such microenvironments requires a thorough investigation of the actual target organ, tissue, and/or tumor. Conventional MEMS technologies are developed for the fabrication of integrated circuits (ICs) on silicone wafers. Conventional MEMS technologies are very expensive and are not developed for biological applications. The digital micro-mirroring microfabrication (DMM) system eliminates the need for an expensive chrome mask by incorporating a dynamic maskless fabrication technique. The DMM is designed to utilize its digital micro-mirrors to fabricate biological devices. This digital microfabrication-based system provides a platform for the fabrication of economic biological models that are specifically designed to mimic the in vivo conditions of the tissue of interest.

Some of these devices have several hundred thousand controllable degrees of freedom, more than two orders of magnitude greater than the largest conventional deformable mirror. We will present results of experiments to characterize the optical properties of these devices and to utilize them to correct aberrations in an optical system. We will also present application scenarios for these devices in high-power laser systems.
