Book excerpt: The fourth edition of the European Conference on Geostatistics for Environmental Applications (geoENV IV) took place in Barcelona, November 27-29, 2002. As a proof that there is an increasing interest in environmental issues in the geostatistical community, the conference attracted over 100 participants, mostly Europeans (up to 10 European countries were represented), but also from other countries in the world. Only 46 contributions, selected out of around 100 submitted papers, were invited to be presented orally during the conference. Additionally 30 authors were invited to present their work in poster format during a special session. All oral and poster contributors were invited to submit their work to be considered for publication in this Kluwer series. All papers underwent a reviewing process, which consisted on two reviewers for oral presentations and one reviewer for posters. The book opens with one keynote paper by Philippe Naveau. It is followed by 40 papers that correspond to those presented orally during the conference and accepted by the reviewers. These papers are classified according to their main topic. The list of topics show the diversity of the contributions and the fields of application. At the end of the book, summaries of up to 19 poster presentations are added. The geoENV conferences stress two issues, namely geostatistics and environmental applications. Thus, papers can be classified into two groups.

Book excerpt: Field-scale characterization of soil spatial variability using remote sensing technology has a great potential for achieving the successful implementation of site-specific management (SSM). The objectives of this study were to: (i) examine the spatial relationships between apparent soil electrical conductivity (ECa) and soil chemical and physical properties to determine if ECa could be useful to characterize soil properties related to crop productivity in the Coastal Plain and Piedmont of North Carolina; (ii) evaluate the effects of in-situ soil moisture variation on ECa mapping as a basis for characterization of soil spatial variability and as a data layer in cluster analysis as a means of delineating sampling zones; (iii) evaluate clustering approaches using different variable sets for management zone delineation to characterize spatial variability in soil nutrient levels and crop yields. Field studies were conducted in two physiographic regions of North Carolina, the Piedmont and Coastal Plain. Spatial measurements of ECa via electromagnetic induction (EMI) were compared with soil chemical parameters (extractable P, K, and micronutrients; pH, cation exchange capacity (CEC), humic matter or soil organic matter; and physical parameters (percentage sand, silt, and clay; and plant-available water (PAW) content; bulk density; cone index; saturated hydraulic conductivity [Ksat] in one of the coastal plain fields) using correlation analysis across fields. We also collected ECa measurements in one coastal plain study field on four days with significantly different naturally occurring soil moisture conditions measured in five increments to 0.75 m using profiling time-domain reflectometry probes to evaluate the temporal variability of ECa associated with changes in in situ soil moisture content. From 36 sites selected by an unbalanced three-stage nested design, 180 core samples were collected at 30cm depth intervals to 150cm. In addition, 500 bulk samples were taken at the 60cm depth on an equally spaced grid over a secondary sampling area of 96m by 76m. The measured parameters showed different patterns of spatial variation. Values of 15-bar moisture retention corresponding to the 500 bulk samples showed a frequency distribution close to the normal with a slight tendency toward skewness. Close relationships were found between bulk density and per cent sand and silt. A highly significant correlation (significant at the 0.01 level) between 15-bar water retention and clay content existed. Particle size distribution exhibited a decrease of silt and clay and a correponding increase of sand with depth. Comparison between the sampling scheme used and three-stage balanced designs revealed that at least two alternatives would be more effective in decreasing the variance of the mean, but they do not provide any degrees of freedom for the third stage. An apparent compromise was found to exist between the scheme used and the optimum unbalanced designs selected for efficient estimation of variance components for the majority of the measured parameters.
