Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spanish Literature England of the Tudors This study of the history of Spanish literature in the England of the Tudors, has been undertaken as a thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at Columbia University. There are in the authorities upon the literature of the time many references to the influence of Spain in English letters, and many sidelights have been cast upon the subject in several of its aspects. No attempt, however, has been made to present a view of it as a whole. It consequently remains in a chaotic state, and some of the information that has commonly circulated in regard to it is self-destructive. It is the aim of this study to coordinate this material and to determine, within certain limits, the place which the literature of Spain and Portugal occupied in the minds and lives of English writers previous to the death of Elizabeth. The peninsular influence has been considered throughout as a definite and organic movement. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis Tudors: The History of England from Henry VIII to Elizabeth I by : Peter Ackroyd
Download or read book Tudors: The History of England from Henry VIII to Elizabeth I written by Peter Ackroyd and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2013-10-08 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peter Ackroyd, one of Britain's most acclaimed writers, brings the age of the Tudors to vivid life in this monumental book in his The History of England series, charting the course of English history from Henry VIII's cataclysmic break with Rome to the epic rule of Elizabeth I. Rich in detail and atmosphere, Peter Ackroyd's Tudors is the story of Henry VIII's relentless pursuit of both the perfect wife and the perfect heir; of how the brief reign of the teenage king, Edward VI, gave way to the violent reimposition of Catholicism and the stench of bonfires under "Bloody Mary." It tells, too, of the long reign of Elizabeth I, which, though marked by civil strife, plots against the queen and even an invasion force, finally brought stability. Above all, however, it is the story of the English Reformation and the making of the Anglican Church. At the beginning of the sixteenth century, England was still largely feudal and looked to Rome for direction; at its end, it was a country where good governance was the duty of the state, not the church, and where men and women began to look to themselves for answers rather than to those who ruled them.
Book Synopsis Revival: A History of Spanish Literature (1930) by : Ernest Merimee
Download or read book Revival: A History of Spanish Literature (1930) written by Ernest Merimee and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-08 with total page 668 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present English version, authorized by the publishers and heirs of M. Merimee, is based on the third French Edition. New material of two sorts has been added, however. First, the translator has been allowed to utlize an annotated, interleaved copy of the Precis, 1922, in which the author, and after his death his son Henri, himself a distinguished Hispanist, had set down material for the next revision. This accounts for many inserted names and phrases, and some paragraphs. Second, the translator has rewritten and added with some freedom.
