Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spanish Influence on English Literature It has always appeared to me as impossible adequately to study the history of a literature as an isolated entity, as it is to follow intelligently the political progress of a country without regard to the concurrent events and actions of other nations in relation to it. Literatures, whilst in their origin the outcome of distinct national and racial circumstances, nevertheless act and react strongly upon each other at certain periods; and the student who seeks to unravel the literary history of his own country with real understanding, should possess, at least, some knowledge of the foreign literatures that have influenced his own, and of the reasons why their influence has been exerted at the periods, and in the directions, that it has. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Relations Between Spanish and English Literature It is no marvel of adroit arrangement. If the interlude was meant to be played on the boards, there is justification for condensing the first four acts of the Spanish book into one act the substitution of a happy ending for the tragedy of the original is a feeble and fatal concession to Philistinism. It has been suggested that the adaptor added his morall conclusion and exhortacyon to vertew' out of deference to Vives. Assuming that he knew Vives (of which there is no proof), this wouldoexplain his tamperings: it is no excuse for them. Yet enough of the original survives to lend the English interlude a permanent historical interest. The New Commodye breaks with the allegorical tradition, introduces human beings on the stage instead of abstractions, and prepares the way for a drama of character. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakespeare and Spain I have entitled this lecture 'Shakespeare and Spain', but I shall deal with one side only of the suggested subject, Spain's influence in Shakespeare, leaving to others the question of Shakespeare's influence in Spain. I am conscious that I have chosen the lesser part, and in the end I shall concur with your criticism that a more fitting title would have been one which Shakespeare himself has provided ready to hand - Much Ado about Nothing - for I am on the side of those who think that Spain's direct influence in Shakespeare is small. That is perhaps the general view among such as have given no special consideration to the matter. Eminent scholars hold widely differing opinions. On the one hand, Mr. Aubrey Bell boldly speaks of the Spanish language 'which Shakespeare seems to have known well', and he continues: 'Several Shakespeare plays were derived from Spanish sources, and one, The Tempest, followed very closely on the publication of its Spanish source. Shakespeare's allusions to Spain are very numerous, he uses Spanish phrases and gives an English garb to others.' On the other hand, Professor Fitzmaurice-Kelly cautiously admits: 'There are in Shakespeare a few touches which, with a little goodwill, may be taken as implying some acquaintance, however slight, with Spanish. It is conceivable that Shakespeare contrived to plod through some of the Spanish books which were reprinted in the Netherlands and brought thence to England; some such supposition is almost unavoidable if we choose to accept Dorer's well-known theory that The Tempest derives from Antonio de Eslava's Noches de Invierno. Book excerpt: This book offers a comprehensive account of modern Spanish culture, tracing its dramatic and often unexpected development from its beginnings after the Revolution of 1868 to the present day. Specially-commissioned essays by leading experts provide analyses of the historical and political background of modern Spain, the culture of the major autonomous regions (notably Castile, Catalonia, and the Basque Country), and the country's literature: narrative, poetry, theatre and the essay. Spain's recent development is divided into three main phases: from 1868 to the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War; the period of the dictatorship of Francisco Franco; and the post-Franco arrival of democracy. The concept of 'Spanish culture' is investigated, and there are studies of Spanish painting and sculpture, architecture, cinema, dance, music, and the modern media. A chronology and guides to further reading are provided, making the volume an invaluable introduction to the politics, literature and culture of modern Spain.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Relations Between Spanish and English Literature There are numerous publications, varying in merit, which deal with what is called the influence of Spanish on English literature as though the extent of this influence were established beyond dispute, and as though there were no reciprocity in the matter. This has the advantage of assuming what ought first to be proved, and of enabling the writer to indulge in wide generalizations; but the method is more convenient than scientific. It is safer to speak of the literary relations between Spain and England, for, if the phrase implies a certain reserve, at any rate it does not prejudge the case. My purpose is to lay the main facts before you, so far as time allows. 'Influence' is an elastic term, not easily defined; yet, however loose your definition, I hope to convince you that there has been some exaggeration on this subject in the past. In the earliest period relations of any sort between Spain and England were necessarily slight (the word 'Spain' is, of course, used here merely as a convenient geographical expression). The Christian inhabitants of the land were too busily engaged in fighting the Moors to do much else, and the inhabitants of these islands took no special interest in the Peninsula. A little later many pilgrims from northern countries journeyed to the famous shrine of St. James, at Compostela, in Galicia. One such pilgrim is mentioned in Wace's Roman de Rou - a certain Walter Giffard who brought back with him, as a present from the reigning King of Galicia to William the Conqueror, the horse which William rode at the battle of Hastings. This was not, perhaps, an auspicious beginning. Giffard was unable, for the best of reasons, to bring back from Spain anything in the shape of a characteristic literary monument. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chapters on Spanish Literature Last summer the Trustees of the Hispanic Society of America did me the honour to invite me to give a course of lectures on Spanish literature in the United States, and almost at the same time an invitation to lecture on the same subject reached me from the Provost of University College, London. The chapters contained in the present volume are the result. The lectures on the Cid, Cervantes, Lope de Vega, Calderon, and Modern Spanish Novelists were delivered during the autumn and winter of 1907 at the University of Columbia; some of these were repeated at Cornell, Harvard, Johns Hopkins, Pennsylvania, and Yale Universities; some at Bryn Mawr, Mount Holyoke, and Smith's College (northampton, Massachusetts); and the whole series was given this spring at University College, London. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shelley Calderon: And Other Essays on English and Spanish Poetry The four essays which form this volume are offered as a small contribution to the movement noticeable at present in this country in favour of a better knowledge of Spain and the Spanish-speaking peoples, the outward mani festation of which is the growing popularity of the Spanish language. There is little doubt that the driving force of such a movement is not of a cultural, but of a utilitarian, order. For the second time in history, the riches of South America fascinate the European, only this time the Conquistador stays at home and it is the enterprising Briton who stirs and dreams of Eldorado. The words of the Spanish language are thus the caravels which will take British trade across the seas and bring back - like the galleons of old - a less bulky though no less substantial cargo in the form of dividends. We need not complain. Commerce was ever the forerunner of culture, and the country which owes her first glimmers of civilisation to the tnicians and the Greeks is not likely to quarrel with the Britons. The merchant may build his ship for commerce, yet he cannot resist her charm, and falls in love with her. So the Briton may still fall in love with the Castilian language, though he learn it for purposes of trade. From such hopes this book derives its inspiration. That poetry should have been chosen as the ground for this work of international goodwill may be due primarily to the author's own proclivities, but also to the influence of an essay on poetry and national character, by Prof. W. Macneile Dixon.1 Poetry is a subject which lends itself perhaps better than any other to such a pur pose. It is, like science and religion, a manifestation of the spirit common to all races, and it has over science the advantage that it demands the presence of our whole being, mind, soul and even body; and over religion that it includes within its sphere tbi: as well as the next world. Poetry, moreover, is one of the human activities best tuned to the Spanish and to the English character, a fact which explains that both England and Spain should have excelled in it. Lastly, poetry is an entirely uh profitable occupation. It takes but little space. It re quires but little time. It needs but little capital, and produces no dividends. It can be quietly discussed without attracting an undue amount of attention. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
