Book excerpt: Nine years ago, in 1967, a conference on spallation nuclear reactions and their applications in astrophysics was held at the University of Pennsylvania. I Since that time, a number of devel opments have given renewed impetus to the study of spallation reactions. Among these are the successful acceleration of high energy heavy ions in the laboratory and their potential use in cancer radiotherapy, the availability of returned lunar rocks containing records of past cosmic-ray irradiation, and the devel opment of the theory that the spallation of interstellar matter is responsible for much of the observed universal abundances of the rare light nuclides. In May 1975, a new conference on spal lation nuclear reactions and their applications to astrophysics and radiotherapy was organized and held, again at the University of Pennsylvania. The papers in this volume are primarily expanded and updated versions of invited papers given at that conference. To the authors of the papers, we owe a debt of gratitude for their contributions and for their forbearance. The confer ence itself was much stimulated by the services of the four session chairmen: William A. Fowler, Serge A. Korff, Robert Serber, and Maurice M. Shapiro, each of whom has over the years made fundamental contributions to the subject matter of this volume. Crucial support for much of the editorial work was provided by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the National Science Foundation. George W.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This detailed and comprehensive reference to spallation -- from the foundations to the latest applications is the only work of its kind and is written by two internationally renowned researchers. Clearly divided into three parts, it begins with the basic principles, while the second part describes the proton-nucleus and proton-matter experiments so-called thin and thick target experiments in terms of secondary particle production as hadrons, pions, muons, photons, electrons, light and intermediate masses, isotope production, heating and energy deposition and materials damage. Many of the experiments are associated with studies, investigations and the construction of spallation neutron sources since 1975 with emphasis on the most recent developments. The final part on technology and applications describes the various engineering problems associated with high intensity neutron spallation sources, ATW's, the needed accelerator systems, material and neutron issues, and high energy neutron source shielding aspects. A must-have for engineers and physicists working in or entering this field.

Book Synopsis Precompound Emission of Energetic Light Fragments in Spallation Reactions by : Leslie Marie Kerby
Download or read book Precompound Emission of Energetic Light Fragments in Spallation Reactions written by Leslie Marie Kerby and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emission of light fragments (LF) from nuclear reactions is an open question. Different reaction mechanisms contribute to their production; the relative roles of each, and how they change with incident energy, mass number of the target, and the type and emission energy of the fragments is not completely understood. None of the available models are able to accurately predict emission of LF from arbitrary reactions. However, the ability to describe production of LF (especially at energies ~ 30 MeV) from many reactions is important for different applications, such as cosmic-ray-induced Single Event Upsets (SEUs), radiation protection, and cancer therapy with proton and heavy-ion beams, to name just a few. The Cascade-Exciton Model (CEM) version 03.03 and the Los Alamos version of the Quark-Gluon String Model (LAQGSM) version 03.03 event generators in Monte Carlo N-Particle Transport Code version 6 (MCNP6) describe quite well the spectra of fragments with sizes up to 4He across a broad range of target masses and incident energies (up to ~ 5 GeV for CEM and up to ~1 TeV/A for LAQGSM). However, they do not predict the high-energy tails of LF spectra heavier than 4He well. Most LF with energies above several tens of MeV are emitted during the precompound stage of a reaction. The current versions of the CEM and LAQGSM event generators do not account for precompound emission of LF larger than 4He. The aim of our work is to extend the precompound model in them to include such processes, leading to an increase of predictive power of LF-production in MCNP6. This entails upgrading the Modified Exciton Model currently used at the preequilibrium stage in CEM and LAQGSM. It also includes expansion and examination of the coalescence and Fermi break-up models used in the precompound stages of spallation reactions within CEM and LAQGSM. Extending our models to include emission of fragments heavier than 4He at the precompound stage has indeed provided results that have much better agreement with experimental data.
