Book excerpt: Excerpt from Across the Country of the Little King: A Trip Through Spain The number of tourists availing themselves of the Southern or Mediterranean route is annually increasing. Many, taking advantage of the stop over privilege, land at Gibraltar and have a hurried but fairly satisfactory glimpse of Tan gier, Seville and Granada, While a goodly number leave the steamer at that port and pass by the route herein portrayed to the northern frontier, a journey of surpassing interest. The student or specialist may find the available literature on the subject satisfactory, but, to the ordinary traveller, Ford, Murray and O'shea are cumbersome, heavy and profuse. While not offered as a Guide-book, it is felt this modest volume will prove a pleasant and useful companion along the way, touching upon all the sights the bird of passage will care to see. What befell me on this vacation jaunt is no story of harrowing adventure, nor yet a record of the acquisition of new facts. But as I covered a thousand miles of the Iberian peninsula on foot, twice that distance Iby third-class rail, and am given to mingling with the masses, it may be that there have filtered into the following pages some facts and impressions that will be new to the reader. Yet it is less to record these that I have written, than to answer a question that has often been put to me since my return. Book Synopsis The Bible in Spain by : George Henry Borrow
Download or read book The Bible in Spain written by George Henry Borrow and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bible in Spain, Or the Journeys, Adventures, and Imprisonments, a book written by George Henry Borrow, is an account of the author's travels in Spain while in the country to sell copies of The Bible translated into Castilian. George Henry Borrow was a nineteenth century English author, best known for his travelogues. In 1835 Borrow was sent to Spain on an assignment as an agent of the British and Foreign Bible Society. Here he spent five years and in doing so experienced a great deal of entertaining and challenging encounters, which he expertly recounts in this collection. As one of the few foreigners in Spain during the Carlist Civil War, Burrow was certainly an oddity in the country. Don Jorge was the name given to him by the locals, and he was both accepted by some and loathed by others. Borrow tells of his encounters with Gypsies, as well Spanish soldiers, women, and religious people, all of which lead to interesting episodes. Borrow is a writer of considerable talent and is able to progress the story's narrative effectively. The book is structured almost as a novel would be, divided into chapters and backed by a continuously progressing story. Borrow's greatest skill is his ability to bring people and places to life with his descriptive text. The author paints a vivid picture that will transport the reader to the Iberian Peninsula of the 1830s. As both a piece of entertainment and a record of his travels, George Burrow's The Bible in Spain, Or the Journeys, Adventures, and Imprisonments is a success. It is an effectively paced and wonderfully written book that can be enjoyed by all - and particularly those that enjoy travel literature. Book Synopsis Knights of Spain, Warriors of the Sun by : Charles M. Hudson
Download or read book Knights of Spain, Warriors of the Sun written by Charles M. Hudson and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2018 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1539 and 1542 Hernando de Soto led a small army on a desperate journey of exploration of almost four thousand miles across the U. S. Southeast. Until the 1998 publication of Charles M. Hudson's foundational Knights of Spain, Warriors of the Sun, De Soto's path had been one of history's most intriguing mysteries. With this book, anthropologist Charles Hudson offers a solution to the question, "Where did de Soto go?" Using a new route reconstruction, for the first time the story of the de Soto expedition can be laid on a map, and in many instances it can be tied to specific archaeological sites. Arguably the most important event in the history of the Southeast in the sixteenth century, De Soto's journey cut a bloody and indelible swath across both the landscape and native cultures in a quest for gold and personal glory. The desperate Spanish army followed the sunset from Florida to Texas before abandoning its mission. De Soto's one triumph was that he was the first European to explore the vast region that would be the American South, but he died on the banks of the Mississippi River a broken man in 1542. With a new foreword by Robbie Ethridge reflecting on the continuing influence of this now classic text, the twentieth-anniversary edition of Knights is a clearly written narrative that unfolds against the exotic backdrop of a now extinct social and geographic landscape. Hudson masterfully chronicles both De Soto's expedition and the native societies he visited. A blending of archaeology, history, and historical geography, this is a monumental study of the sixteenth-century Southeast.

Download or read book Robert Ramble's Stories written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Robert Ramble's Stories: Selected From the History of Spain The following narratives are chiefly drawn from Mrs. Jamieson's Stories from Spanish History, and the historical works of Dr. Robertson. They contain much that is calculated to interest and instruct the youthful mind. A careful discrimination is made throughout between the narratives which rest on authentic historical documents, and those which are drawn from popular tradition. The intimate connexion between the history of Spain and that of the New World, in the period of discovery, adventure, and conquest, will, it is presumed, render this little volume an acceptable present for American children.
