Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spain and the Spaniards, Vol. 1 of 2 Of course, in March 1873 there was no bond fide thunder to be got in London; but that does not matter, since everybody knows that in the case of Ixion no sort of thunder groaned either. As to howling Wind, torrential rain, and im penetrable darkness. There is always plenty of that in this country. SO the opening sentence Will do very well. Book excerpt: The Spanish Pacific designates the space Spain colonized or aspired to rule in Asia between 1521 -- with the arrival of Ferdinand Magellan -- and 1815 -- the end of the Manila-Acapulco galleon trade route. It encompasses what we identify today as the Philippines and the Marianas, but also Spanish America, China, Japan, and other parts of Asia that in the Spanish imagination were extensions of its Latin American colonies. This reader provides a selection of documents relevant to the encounters and entanglements that arose in the Spanish Pacific among Europeans, Spanish Americans, and Asians while highlighting the role of natives, mestizos, and women. A-first-of-its-kind, each of the documents in this collection was selected, translated into English, and edited by a different scholar in the field of early modern Spanish Pacific studies, who also provided commentary and bibliography.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spain and the Spaniards, Vol. 2 of 2 The minister Castelar had written in his memo randum a few days before that the fall of the ancient Spanish monarchy was predoomed on that day when a mob of the populace, with curses on their lips and hatred in their hearts, had invaded the palace of Aranjuez to disturb the majestic repose of their sov ereigns. I had reached that square where on the 17th of March, 1808, occurred those events which were the prologue of the national war, and, as it were, the first word of the death-sentence of the ancient monarchy. My eyes quickly sought the windows of the apartments of the Prince of Peace; I imagined him, as he fled from room to room, pale and dis tracted, Searching for a hiding-place as the echo of the cry followed him up the stairs; I saw poor Charles IV., as with trembling hands he placed the crown of Spain on the head of the prince of the Asturias all the scenes of that terrible drama were enacted in fancy before my eyes, and the profound silence of the place and the sight of that palace, closed and desolate, sent a chill to my heart. Book excerpt: "The story of Spain during World War II has largely been viewed as the story of dictator Francisco Franco's foreign diplomacy in the aftermath of civil war. Wayne H. Bowen now goes behind the scenes of fascism to reveal less-studied dimensions of Spanish history. By examining the conflicts within the Franco regime and the daily lives of Spaniards, he has written the first book-length assessment of the regime's formative years and the struggle of its citizens to survive." "Examining the effects of World War II on key facets of Spanish life - Catholicism, the economy, women, leisure, culture, opposition to Franco, and domestic politics -Bowen explores a wide range of topics: the grinding poverty following the civil war, exacerbated by poor economic decisions; restrictions on employment for women versus the relative autonomy enjoyed by female members of the Falange; the efforts of the Church to recover from near decimation; and methods of repression practiced by the regime against leftists, separatists, and Freemasons. He also shows that the lives of most Spaniards remained apolitical and centered on work, family, and leisure marked by the popularity of American movies and the resurgence of loyalty to regional sports teams."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spain and the Spaniards, in 1843, Vol. 2 of 2 WE had great difficulty in finding places in the diligence to Madrid, all the better seats being secured for weeks beforehand; there were two rival com panics, and we were obliged to take the coach of the inferior administration but they assured me there was little difference in the arrangements, especially in the important article of the time consumed upon the road. I must beg the attention of the reader particularly to the ensuing pages, because in them will be re lated an event of no small importance in the extra ordinary and unexpected scenes that shortly after wards followed in the south of Spain, and it formed a hinge, on which a part of the results from the movements we have seen, turned. VALLADOLID, the rich, as Quevedo calls it, the famous dispenser of influenzas, was, of the cities lying on the north of the Tagus, the one which I most desired to see, although knowing that it contains no great monuments of art, nor anything modern of note. I had a particular sympathy for its name, history, and character, which I had imagined in my own way, from its inhabitants; it seemed to me that it must be an elegant, gay, and studious city, and I could not picture to myself its streets without seeing Gongora pass here, Cervantes there, Leonardo de Argensola on another side, and, in fact, all the other poets, historians, and savants, who lived there when the superb court of the monarchy was in existence. And thinking of the court, I saw a confused assemblage, in the large squares of this pleasant city, of religious processions, bull-fights, military display, masquerades, balls, --all the mixture of fetes in honor of the birth of Philip IV, from the arrival of the English admiral, with his cortege of six hundred cavaliers, to the last banquet of the famous one thousand two hundred dishes of meat, without counting those not served, to quote the popular tradition. I arrived at night, went to the first hotel, and fell asleep with the delightful thought that I should awake in an unknown city. And the awakening in an unknown city, when one has gone there from choice, is indeed a very great pleasure. The thought that from the moment you leave the house, until you return to it at night, you will do nothing but pass from one curiosity to another, and from one satisfaction to another. That all which you see will be quite new; that at every step you will learn something, and that every thing there will impress itself upon your memory..
