There are interminable vistas of rooms, grand salons hung with antique brocades and exquisite old satins in soft and beautiful colors, old rose and blue, embroidered in gold and flowers. This is one of the smaller apartments, but notice the polish of the beautiful mosaic floor, the costly table, the silken hangings, and richly covered walls. The Superb Throne Room 7. Throne Room. is hung entirely with ancient cramoisy velvet. The ornate beauty of this hall, in gold and crimson, is said to have impressed even Napoleon. With the Royal Palace at Madrid our own White House makes no comparison. The vacant throne is yet to be occupied by the Little King? 8. Little King. Alphonso XIII. Thirteen is said to be an unlucky number. So far the boy king has lost his colonies. What yet he may lose remains to be seen. Never has a little Prince had more tender maternal care or more princely education; and to that devoted mother and excellent woman, the Queen Regent, 9. Queen Regent. the people of Spain owe much. She, at least, in her high place has set the example of all that is most womanly, noble, and beautiful; and yet to many in the Kingdom she is simply the foreigner from Austria. She has rendered herself unpopular with the people because she discountenances that national barbarity, the Bull Fight, 10. Bull Fight. and, contrary to royal usage from time immemorial, will never attend it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. How else should her once splendid, world-wide empire have so fallen into decay? N ow her possessions have dwindled to a frac tion of the Iber1an Peninsula and three muti nous colonies, one of which already lies under American guns. Spain herself has declined to the position of a fourth-rate European power, scarcely able to bolster up by ruinous loans her exhausted finances. Here are effects for which there is surely a cause. That cause 1s not in any desolating foreign invasion, and - must be in some qualities of the Spanish people. What are some at least, of those fateful traits, it is believed that this brief sketch will make evident. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Child's History of Spain At that time the peninsula was inhabited by two races, who were know as Iberians and Celts, and who afterwards blended and were'then called Celtiberians. The Iberians came from Africa, and were short, dark skinned men, though not negroes; the Celts came from the North, were tall and white, wore their hair in long braids, and dressed in leathern coats, over which they threw long black cloaks. They spent their time in war or at the chase, while their women tilled the fields. Their weapons were swords and spears of iron, and they were skilled horsemen. They lived chiefly on vegetables, fruits, acorns, and chestnuts, and were not acquainted with strong liquor. In some respects they may remind you of some of our Indian tribes. 1' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Recognition of the Spanish Colonies by the Motherland A short time after the treaty was signed between Spain and Ecuador, Chile sent an envoy to Madrid who was directed to secure an explicit acknowledgment of Chilean independence,58 but the treaty which he negotiated with the Spanish secretary of state did not receive the sanction of his'government.59 Eventu ally, on April 25, 1844, Luis Gonzalez Brabo, Spain's secretary of state, and General J osé Manuel Bongona, the plenipotentiary of Chile, signed at Madrid a treaty of recognition, peace, and perpetual amity. Thus, in accordance with the decree of the Cortes dated December 4, 1836, Queen Isabella acknowledged Chile as a free, sovereign, and independent nation and re nounced her claims to Chilean territory. The provisions regard ing the collection of private debts were the same as those in the Mexican treaty. With regard to the public debt, article four of this treaty stipulated that, as the Chilean republic by a law of N ovember 17, 1835, had voluntarily assumed the debts contracted by the Spanish government in the captaincy-general of Chile, as well as the debts of the Chilean revolutionary governments, that law was to be considered as being embodied in the treaty.0 The ratifications of this treaty were exchanged at Madrid on Sep tember 25.
