Book Synopsis The International Space Station by : Robert C. Dempsey
Download or read book The International Space Station written by Robert C. Dempsey and published by Government Printing Office. This book was released on 2017 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Looks at the operations of the International Space Station from the perspective of the Houston flight control team, under the leadership of NASA's flight directors, who authored the book. The book provides insight into the vast amount of time and energy that these teams devote to the development, planning and integration of a mission before it is executed. The passion and attention to detail of the flight control team members, who are always ready to step up when things do not go well, is a hallmark of NASA human spaceflight operations. With tremendous support from the ISS program office and engineering community, the flight control team has made the International Space Station and the programs before it a success.

Book Synopsis Global Networks of Power: Volume One by : Garrison C. Gibson
Download or read book Global Networks of Power: Volume One written by Garrison C. Gibson and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2012-03-05 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global Networks of Power captures an image of social and political substance of 2011 to early 2012. The U.S. Government has made Orwellian hate crimes legislation a general lever to intervene in politically incorrect crimes upon special classes, given the military the right to exfiltrate U.S. citizens without legal review to unspecified foreign torture facilities where they may disappear forever and has forced corporate medical insurance upon all citizens and sought to force all religious organizations to provide birth control paraphernalia to employees through insurers. Following the attack on the rich in the World Trade Center in 2001 American democracy has been progressively stifled and wealth concentrated with onerous public debt building up along with high unemployment. The need for ecological economic reforms are ignored and the government cannot even reform capitalism to benefit American individualism. Gary C. Gibson writes of contemporary affairs from his own point of view.

Download or read book Spacefarers written by Christopher Wanjek and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2020-04-14 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Telegraph Best Science Book of the Year “A witty yet in-depth exploration of the prospects for human habitation beyond Earth...Spacefarers is accessible, authoritative, and in the end, inspiring.” —Richard Panek, author of The Trouble with Gravity It’s been over fifty years since Apollo 11 landed on the moon. So why is there so little human presence in space? Will we ever reach Mars? And what will it take to become a multiplanet species? While many books have speculated on the possibility of living beyond the Earth, few have delved into the practical challenges. A wry and compelling take on the who, how, and why of near-future colonies in space, Spacefarers introduces us to the engineers, scientists, planners, dreamers, and entrepreneurs who are striving right now to make life in space a reality. While private companies such as SpaceX are taking the lead and earning profits from human space activity, Christopher Wanjek is convinced this is only the beginning. From bone-whittling microgravity to eye-popping profits, the risks and rewards of space settlement have never been so close at hand. He predicts we will have hotels in low-earth orbit, mining and tourism on the Moon, and science bases on Mars—possibly followed (gravity permitting) by full blown settlements. “Nerdily engaging (and often funny)...Technology and science fiction enthusiasts will find much here to delight them, as Wanjek goes into rich detail on rocketry and propulsion methods, including skyhooks and railguns to fling things into orbit...He is a sensible skeptic, yet also convinced that, in the long run, our destiny is among the stars.” —The Guardian “If the events of this year have had you daydreaming about abandoning the planet entirely, [Spacefarers] is a geekily pleasurable survey of the practicalities and challenges.” —The Telegraph “The best book I’ve read on space exploration since Isaac Asimov.” —Michael Shermer, publisher of Skeptic
Book Synopsis Property Rights in Outer Space by : Matthew Johnson
Download or read book Property Rights in Outer Space written by Matthew Johnson and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-05-28 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the role of private mining rights in the utopian imaginary of space colonisation. It presents a transdisciplinary account of the new and evolving legislative frameworks that have been established in anticipation of commercial exploitation of the mineral resources of the off-world frontier. Written in an engaging style, the book investigates a novel case study in the history of capitalism and 'the commons': the emergence of a nascent space mining industry, undergirded by a contentious legislative framework. In 2015, the US passed laws that would recognise the claims of US corporations to own and sell space resources. This unilateral act of pre-emptive law-making would appear to contravene the terms of the UN Outer Space Treaty (1967), which declared that the exploration and use of outer space should be ‘for the benefit of all mankind’ and ‘not subject to national appropriation’. Using this central dynamic between privately held mining rights and outer space as a 'global commons', Matthew Johnson constructs an historical sociology of space mining – from the deep historical roots of common and private property to the contemporary networks of neoliberalism that have engaged with the commercialisation of space activity. The anticipatory expansion of private property claims beyond the Earth both resonates with and problematises the ‘terrain’ of political history, such as the tensions between states and markets, public law and private power, ‘the commons’ and exclusive property. The emerging cosmopolitics of off-world private property mirrors (and is often explicitly embedded within) neoliberal geopolitics, prompting urgent questions about how we can reaffirm principles of democracy and ‘common heritage’ in the international laws of Earth and space. This book is compelling reading for anyone interested in the social study of space, law, economics, technology, politics and property rights.
