Download or read book Shock Initiation Studies of the NASA Solid Rocket Booster Abort System written by Douglas G. Tasker and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A series of tests has been performed in order to estimate the likelihood of a violent, destructive event occurring when the NASA Space Shuttle Solid Rocket Booster (SRB) abort system is deployed. The system utilizes a linear shaped charge to cut open the rocket casing. A series of minimum requirements or criteria have been established that are necessary for a detonation to be initiated. All the laboratory tests described here have been designed to obtain fundamental sensitivity data for the SRB propellant. These data are independent of the size of the propellant grain. This represents a new approach to the analysis of the possible hazards associated with the accidental ignition of solid rocket propellants.

This document has been produced and updated over a 21-year period. It is intended to be a handy reference document, basically one page per flight, and care has been exercised to make it as error-free as possible. This document is basically "as flown" data and has been compiled from many sources including flight logs, flight rules, flight anomaly logs, mod flight descent summary, post flight analysis of mps propellants, FDRD, FRD, SODB, and the MER shuttle flight data and inflight anomaly list. Orbit distance traveled is taken from the PAO mission statistics.

Book Synopsis Reusable Booster System by : National Research Council
Download or read book Reusable Booster System written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2013-01-10 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On June 15, 2011, the Air Force Space Command established a new vision, mission, and set of goals to ensure continued U.S. dominance in space and cyberspace mission areas. Subsequently, and in coordination with the Air Force Research Laboratory, the Space and Missile Systems Center, and the 14th and 24th Air Forces, the Air Force Space Command identified four long-term science and technology (S&T) challenges critical to meeting these goals. One of these challenges is to provide full-spectrum launch capability at dramatically lower cost, and a reusable booster system (RBS) has been proposed as an approach to meet this challenge. The Air Force Space Command asked the Aeronautics and Space Engineering Board of the National Research Council to conduct an independent review and assessment of the RBS concept prior to considering a continuation of RBS-related activities within the Air Force Research Laboratory portfolio and before initiating a more extensive RBS development program. The committee for the Reusable Booster System: Review and Assessment was formed in response to that request and charged with reviewing and assessing the criteria and assumptions used in the current RBS plans, the cost model methodologies used to fame [frame?] the RBS business case, and the technical maturity and development plans of key elements critical to RBS implementation. The committee consisted of experts not connected with current RBS activities who have significant expertise in launch vehicle design and operation, research and technology development and implementation, space system operations, and cost analysis. The committee solicited and received input on the Air Force launch requirements, the baseline RBS concept, cost models and assessment, and technology readiness. The committee also received input from industry associated with RBS concept, industry independent of the RBS concept, and propulsion system providers which is summarized in Reusable Booster System: Review and Assessment.

Book Synopsis Liquid Rocket Booster (Lrb) for the Space Transportation System (Sts) Systems Study. Appendix B: Liquid Rocket Booster Acoustic and Thermal Environmen by : National Aeronautics and Space Adm Nasa
Download or read book Liquid Rocket Booster (Lrb) for the Space Transportation System (Sts) Systems Study. Appendix B: Liquid Rocket Booster Acoustic and Thermal Environmen written by National Aeronautics and Space Adm Nasa and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2018-10-26 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ascent thermal environment and propulsion acoustic sources for the Martin-Marietta Corporation designed Liquid Rocket Boosters (LRB) to be used with the Space Shuttle Orbiter and External Tank are described. Two designs were proposed: one using a pump-fed propulsion system and the other using a pressure-fed propulsion system. Both designs use LOX/RP-1 propellants, but differences in performance of the two propulsion systems produce significant differences in the proposed stage geometries, exhaust plumes, and resulting environments. The general characteristics of the two designs which are significant for environmental predictions are described. The methods of analysis and predictions for environments in acoustics, aerodynamic heating, and base heating (from exhaust plume effects) are also described. The acoustic section will compare the proposed exhaust plumes with the current SRB from the standpoint of acoustics and ignition overpressure. The sections on thermal environments will provide details of the LRB heating rates and indications of possible changes in the Orbiter and ET environments as a result of the change from SRBs to LRBs.
