Book Synopsis Disasters and Accidents in Manned Spaceflight by : Shayler David
Download or read book Disasters and Accidents in Manned Spaceflight written by Shayler David and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2000-05-17 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here, Dave Shayler examines the hurdles faced by space crews as they prepare and embark on space missions. Divided into six parts, the text opens with the fateful, tragic mission of the Challenger crew in 1986. This is followed by a review of the risks that accompany every space trip and the unique environment in which the space explorer lives and works. The next four sections cover the four parts of any space flight (training, launch, in-flight and recovery) and present major historical incidents in each case. The final section looks at the next forty years beyond the Earth's atmosphere, beginning with the International Space Station and moving on to the difficulties inherent in a manned exploration of Mars.
Book Synopsis Advancing Aeronautical Safety by : National Research Council
Download or read book Advancing Aeronautical Safety written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2010-09-29 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advancing the state of aviation safety is a central mission of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Congress requested this review of NASA's aviation safety-related research programs, seeking an assessment of whether the programs have well-defined, prioritized, and appropriate research objectives; whether resources have been allocated appropriately among these objectives; whether the programs are well coordinated with the safety research programs of the Federal Aviation Administration; and whether suitable mechanisms are in place for transitioning the research results into operational technologies and procedures and certification activities in a timely manner. Advancing Aeronautical Safety contains findings and recommendations with respect to each of the main aspects of the review sought by Congress. These findings indicate that NASA's aeronautics research enterprise has made, and continues to make, valuable contributions to aviation system safety but it is falling short and needs improvement in some key respects.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the basis of a survey of potential causes of emergencies in space, the document considers that these may be ranked, in order of importance, as (1) equipment failures, (2) personnel errors, and (3) environmental hazards. A fourth potential cause, personnel breakdowns, appears to be of negligible significance relative to the other causes. (Author).

Book Synopsis Space Exploration and Astronaut Safety by : Joseph N. Pelton
Download or read book Space Exploration and Astronaut Safety written by Joseph N. Pelton and published by AIAA (American Institute of Aeronautics & Astronautics). This book was released on 2006 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part history, part technology, and part policy analysis, this one-of-a-kind, landmark book reviews the history of NASA's space exploration program, its astronaut safety program, the present status of the Space Shuttle and the International Space Station, and the options and strategic opportunities that present themselves as NASA enters its next phase of space exploration with Project Constellation. Written by one of the foremost experts on space policy, Space Exploration and Astronaut Safety, presents in a highly readable format the state of today's space technology, along with the concerns about safety in space exploration as it applies to current and future programs, and whether these issues can be reconciled and translated into a viable future space policy. The book thoroughly explores NASA's options and how these options are tempered and influenced by astronaut safety considerations as well as by uncertain Congressional funding and complex organizational management issues. It also considers the impact of international participation and the increasing prospect of the privatization of space travel. Shuttle tragedies, interviews with key experts, surveys, and extensive research on the Shuttle, ISS, and related NASA space safety programs, the author lays out a comprehensive presentation on where space exploration has been, where it stands today, where it is going, and where it has the potential to go. Decision makers in government (especially those involved with NASA policy and safety), members of space agencies around the world, aerospace scientists and engineers, space enthusiasts, and academicians will all find this book an indispensable and enlightening guide. Investment in the future of space exploration will cost billions of dollars; this book provides ample background and the impetus to enable policy makers, the aerospace community, and the general public to make balanced, educated decisions on how those dollars can best be spent.
Book Synopsis Streamlining Space Launch Range Safety by : National Research Council
Download or read book Streamlining Space Launch Range Safety written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2000-04-15 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. space program is rapidly changing from an activity driven by federal government launches to one driven by commercial launches. In 1997, for the first time commercial launches outnumbered government launches at the Eastern Range (ER), located at Cape Canaveral Air Station, Florida. Commercial activity is also increasing at the Western Range (WR), located at Vandenberg Air Force Base, California. The government itself is emulating commercial customers, shifting from direct management of launch programs to the purchase of space launch services from U.S. commercial launch companies in an open, competitive market. The fundamental goal of the U.S. space program is to ensure safe, reliable, and affordable access to space. Despite the inherent danger of space launches, the U.S. space program has demonstrated its ability to protect the public. No launch site worker or member of the general public has been killed or seriously injured in any of the 4,600 launches conducted at the ER and WR during the entire 50-year history of the space age. Streamlining Space Launch Range Safety discusses whether range safety processes can be made more efficient and less costly without compromising public safety. This report presents six primary recommendations, which address risk management, Africa gates, roles and responsibilities, range safety documentation [EWR 127-1]), global positioning system (GPS) receiver tracking systems, and risk standards for aircraft and ships.

Book Synopsis Safe Is Not An Option by : Rand Simberg
Download or read book Safe Is Not An Option written by Rand Simberg and published by Interglobal Media LLC. This book was released on 2014-04-10 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of exploration and establishment of new lands, science and technologies has always entailed risk to the health and lives of the explorers. Yet, when it comes to exploring and developing the high frontier of space, the harshest frontier ever, the highest value is apparently not the accomplishment of those goals, but of minimizing, if not eliminating, the possibility of injury or death of the humans carrying them out. For decades since the end of Apollo, human spaceflight has been very expensive and relatively rare (about 500 people total, with a death rate of about 4%), largely because of this risk aversion on the part of the federal government and culture. From the Space Shuttle, to the International Space Station, the new commercial crew program to deliver astronauts to it, and the regulatory approach for commercial spaceflight providers, our attitude toward safety has been fundamentally irrational, expensive and even dangerous, while generating minimal accomplishment for maximal cost. This book entertainingly explains why this means that we must regulate passenger safety in the new commercial spaceflight industry with a lighter hand than many might instinctively prefer, that NASA must more carefully evaluate rewards from a planned mission to rationally determine how much should be spent to avoid the loss of participants, and that Congress must stop insisting that safety is the highest priority, for such insistence is an eloquent testament to how unimportant they and the nation consider the opening of this new
