Theoretical ideas are drawn from relational constructivism following Harrison White and Niklas Luhmann’s systems theory, which I will compare within the first section of this paper. I will show that networks consist of relations, which have to be modelled as social structures that are different from communication, and can be seen as consisting of mutual expectations about social processes, therefore describing the probability of communication taking place. Knots in networks can be described as persons and evolve in the context and as a part of social structures. Finally, a closer look will be taken to how net-works are embedded in modern societies. The last section tries to reformulate classical insights regarding social networks from a systems theory point of view.

Im Rahmen dieser Arbeit werden Netzwerke aus soziologischer Perspektive betrachtet: - Dabei ist der erste Schritt der Einsatz der soziologischen Netzwerkanalyse als statistisches Instrumentarium (Jansen, 2006, S. 11). - Der zweite Schritt ist die Interpretation der erhobenen Daten über soziale Netzwerke durch die Verwendung / Generierung von Netzwerktheorien. Dabei werden jeweils unterschiedliche Sichtweisen der Beziehungsstrukturen zwischen den Akteuren miteinander in Verbindung gebracht (Stegbauer, 2008, S. 12). Entsprechend dieser Chronologie erfolgt der Aufbau der Arbeit in vier Schritten: Im folgenden Kapitel werden einschlägige Definitionen des Begriffes der „sozialen Netzwerke“ beschrieben. Dabei spielen soziale Beziehungen jeweils eine wesentliche Rolle, daher erfolgt auch eine Charakterisierung ihrer Dimensionen. Aufgrund der Vielzahl der vorhandenen Definitionen für soziale Netzwerke werden zusätzlich auch deren Merkmale beschrieben, die im Rahmen empirischer Untersuchungen erhoben werden. Ergänzend zu diesen Hintergrundinformationen wird in Kapitel 3 ein Überblick über die historische Entwicklung gegeben. Dabei werden - ausgehend von Gestalttheorie und Strukturfunktionalismus - die wesentlichen Meilensteine bis hin zur heute bekannten Netzwerkanalyse genannt. Aufbauend auf den Grundlagen der vorangegangenen Abschnitte werden in Kapitel 4 verschiedene Perspektiven der Netzwerktheorie erörtert. Dabei wird zuerst auf die Mikroebene eingegangen. Diese interpretiert die Netzwerktheorie als strukturalistische Hanldungstheorie, bei welcher soziale Netzwerke jeweils Einfluss auf das soziale Handeln der Individuen haben. Dieser Ansatz wird an einer empirischen Studie belegt. Den Gegenpol bildet dazu Kapitel 4.2. Hier wird die Netzwerktheorie aus der Makroebene interpretiert. Die Netzwerktheorie ist damit eine konstruktivistische Gesellschaftstheorie. Um eine Verknüpfung zur Praxis herzustellen, wird auch dieser Ansatz im Anschluss an die theoretischen Ausführungen durch eine empirische Studie verdeutlicht. Im Ausblick wird schließlich anhand von kurzfristig anstehenden Fachtagungen zu den Themen Netzwerkanalyse und Netzwerktheorie ein Überblick über den aktuellen Stand der Forschung im deutschsprachigen Raum gegeben. The authors of this collection seek to fill that gap in the ethnographic record by drawing attention to the deep historical attachments of island communities to rivers, and the ways in which those attachments are changing in response to various forms of economic development and social change. In addition to making a unique contribution to Pacific island ethnography, the authors of this volume speak to a global set of issues of immense importance to a world in which water scarcity, conflict, pollution and the degradation of riparian environments afflict growing numbers of people.
