Book Synopsis Music and Its Referential Systems by : Matjaz Barbo
Download or read book Music and Its Referential Systems written by Matjaz Barbo and published by Hollitzer Wissenschaftsverlag. This book was released on 2012-02-24 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can we define the referential systems by which music is determined and through which music gets its own sense and meaning? What is the relation between these systems? Such questions are of particular weight in relation to current music practices, characterized by a great many of analytical procedures and hermeneutical views. The questions raised open a series of different thematic fields presented in this book. The authors allocate the place of music to the field of aesthetic autonomy or describe its specific sign system(s). Special attention is focused on the systems of musicological contextualization and the meaning/understanding of music in different historical and/or functional contexts, from traditional liturgical chant up to recent compositions. Various contributions in the collection are dedicated to the relation between music and film, while others deal with the special sociological conditions that constitute some specific musical praxis, such as folk or rock music.
Book Synopsis Roads to Music Sociology by : Alfred Smudits
Download or read book Roads to Music Sociology written by Alfred Smudits and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-08-28 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Music sociology occupies a special position in the social and cultural sciences. The terminology alone – in German it is ‘Musiksoziologie’ and not ‘Soziologie der Musik’ – indicates many possible approaches: Is ‘music sociology’ a subdiscipline within sociology or musicology? Or is it a discipline on its own, espousing significant differences from sociology and musicology alike? On the occasion of its 50th anniversary, the Department of Music Sociology at the mdw – University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna – probably the only one in the world to bear the name as a separate department – decided to clarify the state of music sociology. Some of the world’s most prominent representatives of the discipline were invited to participate in this project and present their own viewpoints on the various approaches to music sociology. Their contributions address the particular research objects of music sociology (institutions of musical life; production, distribution and consumption of music; music-making; ‘works’, genres and repertoires; etc.) as well as the different methods of research (stock-taking, surveys, interviews, music analysis, biographical research, etc.).
Book Synopsis Sounds of Modern History by : Daniel Morat
Download or read book Sounds of Modern History written by Daniel Morat and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2014-09-01 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long ignored by scholars in the humanities, sound has just begun to take its place as an important object of study in the last few years. Since the late 19th century, there has been a paradigmatic shift in auditory cultures and practices in European societies. This change was brought about by modern phenomena such as urbanization, industrialization and mechanization, the rise of modern sciences, and of course the emergence of new sound recording and transmission media. This book contributes to our understanding of modern European history through the lens of sound by examining diverse subjects such as performed and recorded music, auditory technologies like the telephone and stethoscope, and the ambient noise of the city.
Book Synopsis Sounding Cities by : Sebastian Klotz
Download or read book Sounding Cities written by Sebastian Klotz and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2018 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Berlin, Chicago, Kolkata - three modern cities, whose soundscapes are as different as they are similar. Historically and musically, all three cities bear witness to changing worlds, above all the diversity and multiculturalism that led to the rapid growth of urban centers from the Enlightenment to the present. It is this sound world of musical difference, which modernity subjected to auditory transformation, that is the subject of Sounding Cities. The chapters in this book draw the reader to the life of the city itself, to its streets and stages, transforming how we listen to the modern world. Philip V. Bohlman is Ludwig Rosenberger Distinguished Service Professor in Jewish History in the Department of Music at the University of Chicago, and Honorary Professor at the University of Music, Drama and Media in Hanover. Sebastian Klotz is Professor of Transcultural Musicology and Historical Anthropology of Music at the Humboldt University of Berlin. Lars-Christian Koch is Head of the Department of Ethnomusicology and the Berlin Phonogram Archive at the Museum of Ethnology in Berlin, Professor for Ethnomusicology at the University of Cologne, and HonoraryProfessor for Ethnomusicology at the University of the Arts in Berlin.
Book Synopsis Language, Normativity and Europeanisation by : Heiko Motschenbacher
Download or read book Language, Normativity and Europeanisation written by Heiko Motschenbacher and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-12-23 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on linguistic practices of identity construction in a popular culture media context, the Eurovision Song Contest. Subscribing to a normativity-based approach to critical discourse analysis, it studies Europeanisation as it surfaces at the discursive interface of European, national and sexual identities in Eurovision lyrics and performances. Research in critical discourse analysis that deals with Europeanisation, or the discursive work involved in European identity formation, has so far mainly studied data from EU political contexts that illustrate a top-down approach to what Europeanness means. The present book complements this earlier research in several ways, focusing on the linguistic construction of identities, and its interrelation with non-linguistic modes of signification in the Eurovision Song Contest. Discursive mechanisms that prove to be central for the normative shifts of Europeanisation in the given context are de-essentialisation, inclusion, camp, crossing and languaging.
Book Synopsis Greek Rebetiko from a Psychocultural Perspective by : Daniel Koglin
Download or read book Greek Rebetiko from a Psychocultural Perspective written by Daniel Koglin and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Greek Rebetiko from a Psychocultural Perspective: Same Songs Changing Minds examines the ways in which audiences in present-day Greece and Turkey perceive and use the Greek popular song genre rebetiko to cultivate specific cultural habits and identities. In the past, rebetiko has been associated chiefly with the lower strata of Greek society. But Daniel Koglin approaches the subject from a different perspective, exploring the mythological and ritual aspects of rebetiko, which intellectual elites on both sides of the Aegean Sea have adapted to their own world views in our age of globalized consumption. Combining qualitative and quantitative methods from ethnomusicology, ritual studies, conceptual history and music psychology, Koglin casts light on the role played by national perceptions in the processes of music production and consumption. His analysis reveals that rebetiko persistently oscillates between conceptual categories: it is a music both ours and theirs, marginal and mainstream, joyful and grievous, sacred and profane. The study culminates in the thesis that this semantic multistability is not only a key concept to understanding the ongoing popularity of rebetiko in Greece, and its recent renaissance in Turkey, but also a fundamental aspect of the human experience on the south-eastern borders of Europe.
Book Synopsis 8. Ägyptologische Tempeltagung by : Monika Dolińska
Download or read book 8. Ägyptologische Tempeltagung written by Monika Dolińska and published by Otto Harrassowitz Verlag. This book was released on 2010 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Art, Play, Labour: the Music Profession in Germany (1850–1960) by : Martin Rempe
Download or read book Art, Play, Labour: the Music Profession in Germany (1850–1960) written by Martin Rempe and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-05-08 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Germany is considered a lauded land of music: outstanding composers, celebrated performers and famous orchestras exert great international appeal. Since the 19th century, the foundation of this reputation has been the broad mass of musicians who sat in orchestra pits, played in ensembles for dances or provided the musical background in silent movie theatres. Martin Rempe traces their lives and working worlds, including their struggle for economic improvement and societal recognition. His detailed portrait of the profession ‘from below’ sheds new light on German musical life in the modern era.
