Book Synopsis Building Democracy and Civil Society East of the Elbe by : Sven Eliaeson
Download or read book Building Democracy and Civil Society East of the Elbe written by Sven Eliaeson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-04-18 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the idea of civil society and how it is being implemented in Eastern Europe. The implosion of the Russian empire fifteen years ago and the new wave of democratization opened a new field of inquiry. The wide-ranging debate on the transition became focused on a conceptual battle, the question of how to define "civil society". Because totalitarian systems shun self-organization, real existing civil society barely existed East of the Elbe, and the emergence of civil society took unusually complex and puzzling forms, which varied with national culture, and reflected the deep historical past of these societies. This insightful text relates the concept of civil society and developments in Eastern Europe to wider sociological theories, and makes international comparisons where appropriate. It discusses particular aspects of civil society, and examines the difficulties of establishing civil society. It concludes by assessing the problems and prospects for civil society in Eastern Europe going forward.

Book excerpt: Despite the interest in general European history, the European dimension is surprisingly absent from much of the writing of contemporary history. Book Synopsis The Theory of Social Democracy by : Thomas Meyer
Download or read book The Theory of Social Democracy written by Thomas Meyer and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-09-30 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ascendancy of neo-liberalism in different parts of the world has put social democracy on the defensive. Its adherents lack a clear rationale for their policies. Yet a justification for social democracy is implicit in the United Nations Covenants on Human Rights, ratified by most of the worlds countries. The covenants commit all nations to guarantee that their citizens shall enjoy the traditional formal rights; but they likewise pledge governments to make those rights meaningful in the real world by providing social security and cultural recognition to every person. This new book provides a systematic defence of social democracy for our contemporary global age. The authors argue that the claims to legitimation implicit in democratic theory can be honored only by social democracy; libertarian democracies are defective in failing to protect their citizens adequately against social, economic, and environmental risks that only collective action can obviate. Ultimately, social democracy provides both a fairer and more stable social order. But can social democracy survive in a world characterized by pervasive processes of globalization? This book asserts that globalization need not undermine social democracy if it is harnessed by international associations and leavened by principles of cultural respect, toleration, and enlightenment. The structures of social democracy must, in short, be adapted to the exigencies of globalization, as has already occurred in countries with the most successful social-democratic practices.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The courageous acts of whistleblowing that inspired the world over the past few years have changed our perception of surveillance and control in today's information society. But what are the wider effects of whistleblowing as an act of dissent on politics, society, and the arts? How does it contribute to new courses of action, digital tools, and contents? This urgent intervention based on the work of Berlin's Disruption Network Lab examines this growing phenomenon, offering interdisciplinary pathways to empower the public by investigating whistleblowing as a developing political practice that has the ability to provoke change from within.
Book Synopsis Smarter Than Napoleon Hills Methode: Die Erfolgsideen in Frage stellen aus dem Buch "Smarter Than the Devil" – Band 14 by : MAX EDITORIAL
Download or read book Smarter Than Napoleon Hills Methode: Die Erfolgsideen in Frage stellen aus dem Buch "Smarter Than the Devil" – Band 14 written by MAX EDITORIAL and published by Max Editorial. This book was released on 2024-04-26 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book Synopsis Contested Civic Spaces by : Siri Hummel
Download or read book Contested Civic Spaces written by Siri Hummel and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2023-07-03 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For some years, we have observed a broad public discussion over the shrinking civic space. While the focus has generally been on countries with authoritarian governance systems, it has more recently become apparent that the issue is neither restricted to these countries nor indeed to countries with weak or non-existing democracies. It has been demonstrated that the space in which civil society actors and individual citizens may contribute to public affairs is undergoing fundamental changes in Europe. While in some areas, the clout of civic initiative is larger today than ever before, in others, civic action is highly disputed and governments are attempting to crowd out non-governmental actors from the public sphere. This edited volume examines the wellbeing of civil society in the Europe and its riparian states. Presented by experts from 12 European countries the book presents insights in the latest developments of civil society and aspect like the shifting interaction between the state, market and civil society or the influence of populist movements on civil society and tackles the question wether there is a shrinking civic space in Europe. It addresses policy and decision makers, civil society academics and actors in the field, as well as the public.
