Hierbei werden die praktische Durchführung erläutert, unterschiedliche Variationen des sozialen Atoms vorgestellt und eine Auswahl an diagnostischen Kriterien zur Auswertung des sozialen Atoms vertieft. In einem Fazit werden die Erkenntnisse zusammengefasst und abschließend einige Besonderheiten und Kritikpunkte des sozialen Atoms als netzwerkdiagnostisches Verfahren diskutiert. Die Analyse der sozialen Einbindung und sozialen Beziehungen von Menschen wird als Netzwerkdiagnostik bezeichnet und stellt wohl die „Königsdisziplin der sozialen Diagnostik“ dar. Mit Hilfe von Netzwerkdiagnostik, die sich den lebensweltlichen Beziehungen von Klient:innen widmet, lassen sich Aussagen über die Quantität, die Qualität und die Ressourcen von sozialen Netzwerken und den ihnen innewohnenden sozialen Beziehungen treffen. Es können Antworten auf die Fragen gefunden werden, welche förderlichen Beziehungen für die Bewältigung von Problemen stabilisiert und intensiviert werden können oder zur Verfügung stehen, welche neuen Beziehungen aufgebaut oder reaktiviert werden können, oder welche dysfunktionale Beziehungen beendet werden sollten. Diese Erkenntnisse können Ausgangspunkte für Interventionen und Handlungsmöglichkeiten in der Sozialen Arbeit bieten.

Nun stellt sich die Frage, was unter Sozialer Diagnostik zu verstehen ist. Mit dem Begriff Diagnose verbindet die Mehrheit der Menschen die Medizin oder die Psychologie. Dies sind auch die Handlungsfelder, in denen Diagnosen am bekanntesten sind. Sinngemäß heißt Diagnostizieren "im Hinblick auf ein angestrebtes Ziel regelgeleitet Informationen zu gewinnen". Im Handlungsfeld der Sozialen Arbeit spricht man von (psycho-)sozialer Diagnose. Die Aufmerksamkeit wird hier auf die Persönlichkeit und das soziale Umfeld eines Menschen gelegt. Mit einem Blick in die Geschichte der Sozialen Arbeit wird der Zusammenhang von Professionalisierung und psychosozialer Diagnostik deutlich. Eingeführt wurde der Begriff 1917 in den USA durch die Pionierin Mary Richmond (Mitglied der Charity Organisation Society) und der Veröffentlichung ihres Buches "Social Diagnosis". Dies wurde zur wissenschaftlichen Grundlage für die Methode der Einzelfallhilfe (Case-Work). Das heißt, die Sozialarbeiter sollten die individuellen Probleme jedes Hilfsbedürftigen herausfinden und auf deren Basis eine bedarfsgerechte Hilfe anbieten. Durch Mary Richmond inspiriert, führte die Pionierin Alice Solomon den Begriff der sozialen Diagnostik 1926 in Deutschland ein. Beide erkannten die Notwendigkeit einer wissenschaftlichen Grundlage Sozialer Arbeit und begründeten damit die Anfänge deren Professionalisierung.

Within those changes, reforms do not go ‘as planned’ but, as is always the case with processes of rationali- tion, have a series of unintended effects. At the same time it becomes incre- ingly clear who in this process are the winners and who are the losers, although this is still subject to fluctuation and change. This can be illustrated by two - amples from current events: Where the range of taught courses is concerned, as part of the Bologna Process the new structuring of student study paths and their organisation is aimed at unifying the European area of science to ensure a study that is equally permissive and efficient. However, it is to be deplored that the mobility of s- dents has become more restricted because of an increasing specialisation in the available study paths. Also, bachelor degrees do not meet with the anticipated high response from the labour market in all countries, so that the master’s degree is becoming more or less a ‘must’, while at the same time the number of study places on master’s courses is limited. Instead of the intended reduction in the duration of study time in comparison to the previous German ‘Magister’ and ‘Diplom’, rather a prolongation in the duration of studies has been recorded.

With remarkable consistency, numerous investigations have demonstrated an inverse correlation between social class and prevalence rates for most forms of psychopathology. The debate on the interpreta tion of these findings - social causation versus social selection processes - continues to this day. Moreover, the question as to what the psychoso cial processes are through which social class and individual psychopa thology are mediated has remained mostly unanswered. The concept of social stress may well provide new insights in this regard. One should note, in particular, the considerable conceptual and methodological progress made in life event research. Recently, the first attempts have been made to link the two concepts of social class and social stress. These developments will be retraced in this book in the light of new investigations. Descriptive epidemiological studies on the relation between social class and psychiatric disorders form the point of depar ture. Explicit reference is made to two classical studies in psychiatric epidemiology: Faris and Dunham's Chicago study and the New Haven study by Hollingshead and Redlich. Following on from there, various approaches in analytical epidemiological research are presented which attempt to determine whether - or, more precisely, to what extent - social causation or social selection processes can be said to be responsible for the higher rates of psychiatric disorders in lower social strata.
