Ausgangspunkt für ihn ist die kürzlich stattgefundenen Gründung eines Bundesfachverbandes betrieblicher Sozialarbeit e.V. (bbs) und die damit verbundene Frage, "ob und wie es der betrieblichen Sozialarbeit zukünftig gelingen kann, sich langfristig in den Betrieben zu etablieren". Der Autor will zur Beantwortung dieser Frage beitragen, indem er die verschiedenen Erscheinungsformen der betrieblichen Sozialarbeit - u.a. als Betriebspflege, Werksfürsorge - in Vergangenheit und Gegenwart ebenso behandelt wie die "vergangenen und aktuellen gesellschaftlichen und arbeitsorganisatorischen Einflüsse und deren Auswirkungen auf die betriebliche Sozialarbeit". Diese Aufgabe meistert er mit großer Prägnanz. Zunächst bemüht er sich um die Klärung grundlegender Begriffe: betriebliche Sozialpolitik - Betrieb - betriebliche Sozialarbeit. Er stellt die wesentlichste Definitionen aus der Literatur vor und kommt in deren Diskussion zu eigenen, für seine Arbeit geltenden Bestimmungen. Dies ist um so wichtiger, als es eine Vielzahl unterschiedlicher Betrachtungsweisen aus unterschiedlichen Disziplinen gibt. Der zweite Teil der Arbeit stellt eine knappe, aber dennoch nicht verkürzte Entwicklungsgeschichte der betrieblichen Sozialpolitik und Sozialarbeit in Deutschland dar. Ausgangspunkt ist die beginnende Industrialisierung, Endpunkt die betriebliche Sozialberatung in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland. Der Autor macht dabei die Auswirkungen gesellschaftlicher Veränderungen und neuer Produktionsweisen auf die Entwicklung betrieblicher Sozialarbeit deutlich und faßt den Gang dieser Entwicklung abschließend prägnant zusammen. Im dritten Kapitel liefert der Autor eine ausgührliche Beschreibung der heutigen betrieblichen Sozialarbeit. Diese Diagnose soll Anregungen für eine Weiterentwicklung der betrieblichen sozialen Arbeit geben. Da der Autor als Motor einer solchen Weiterentwicklung den Berufsfachverband betrieblicher Sozialarbeit e.V. (bbs) sieht, wird auch dieser und besonders die von ihm entwickelte Rahmenkonzeption für betriebliche Sozialarbeit vorgestellt. Moeller is the first historian of modern German women to use social policy as a lens to focus on society's conceptions of gender difference and "woman's place." He investigates the social, economic, and political status of women in West Germany after World War II to reveal how the West Germans, emerging from the rubble of the Third Reich, viewed a reconsideration of gender relations as an essential part of social reconstruction. The debate over "woman's place" in the fifties was part of West Germany's confrontation with the ideological legacy of National Socialism. At the same time, the presence of the Cold War influenced all debates about women and the family. In response to the "woman question," West Germans defined the boundaries not only between women and men, but also between East and West. Moeller's study shows that public policy is a crucial arena where women's needs, capacities, and possibilities are discussed, identified, defined, and reinforced. Nowhere more explicitly than in the first decade of West Germany's history did, in Joan Scott's words, "politics construct gender and gender construct politics." Book excerpt: A central pillar of contemporary communication research is the analysis of filmed interactions between people. The techniques employed in such analysis first took on a recognizably modern form in the 1970s, but their roots go back to the earliest days of motion picture technology in the late nineteenth century. This book presents original essays accompanied by written responses which together create a dialogue exploring early efforts at audio-visual sequence analysis and their common goal to capture the "whole" of the communicative situation. The first three chapters of this volume look at the film-based research of Gestalt psychologists in Berlin as well as psychologists in the orbit of Karl and Charlotte Bühler in Vienna in the first decades of the twentieth century. Most of these figures – along with many other Central European scholars of this era – were driven into exile in the United States after the rise of National Socialism in the 1930s. This scientific migration led to the cross-pollination of communication studies in America, an outcome visible in the leading project in interaction research of the mid-twentieth century, the Natural History of an Interview. The following two chapters examine this project in its historical context. The volume closes with a critical edition of a treasure from the archives: the transcript of a speech delivered by Ray Birdwhistell, a key participant in the Natural History of an Interview project and founder of kinesics.

The term became more prominent only after World War II. Kaufmann, the doyen of the sociology of social policy in Germany, argues that „social policy“ responds to the modern disjunction between “state” and “society” diagnosed by the German philosopher Hegel. Hegel’s disciple Lorenz von Stein saw social policy as a means to pacify the capitalist class conflict. After World War II, social policy expanded in an unprecedented way, changing its character in the process. Social policy turned from class politics into a policy for the whole population, with new concepts – like "social security", "redistribution" and "quality of life" - and new overarching formulas, "social market economy" and "social state" (the German version of “welfare state”). Both formulas have remained indeterminate and contested, indicating the inherent openness of the idea of the “social”.

Book excerpt: Anthropologists have written a great deal about the coastal adaptations and seafaring traditions of Pacific Islanders, but have had much less to say about the significance of rivers for Pacific island culture, livelihood and identity. The authors of this collection seek to fill that gap in the ethnographic record by drawing attention to the deep historical attachments of island communities to rivers, and the ways in which those attachments are changing in response to various forms of economic development and social change. In addition to making a unique contribution to Pacific island ethnography, the authors of this volume speak to a global set of issues of immense importance to a world in which water scarcity, conflict, pollution and the degradation of riparian environments afflict growing numbers of people. Several authors take a political ecology approach to their topic, but the emphasis here is less on hydro-politics than on the cultural meaning of rivers to the communities we describe.
