Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fourfold Sovereignty of God These four Lectures are intended to complete the outline of the subject of those on the Four Great Evils of the Day. In speaking of the latter, I was constantly aware that the posi tive truths ought to have been first stated, and that the Sovereignty of God must be understood before the Revolt of Man can be measured. These Lectures, like the last, are printed as they were taken down at the time. I let them go with all their faults, believing the truths and prin ciples contained in them to be of vital moment in these days; and hoping that some one with more ability and greater leisure will fill Up the outline I have tried to draw. Book excerpt: In the last few years, 9/11, a tsunami, Hurricane Katrina, and many other tragedies have shown us that the vision of God in today's churches in relation to evil and suffering is often frivolous. Against the overwhelming weight and seriousness of the Bible, many Christians are choosing to become more shallow, more entertainment-oriented, and therefore irrelevant in the face of massive suffering. In Suffering and the Sovereignty of God, contributors John Piper, Joni Eareckson Tada, Steve Saint, Carl Ellis, David Powlison, Dustin Shramek, and Mark Talbot explore the many categories of God's sovereignty as evidenced in his Word. They urge readers to look to Christ, even in suffering, to find the greatest confidence, deepest comfort, and sweetest fellowship they have ever known.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pink (d. 1953) is noted for his independent thinking. He was so well read, and had such a photographic memory, that he could give you the page and column in a host of reference works and commentaries. This book shocked the Christian world in 1919 when he published it. He fiercely defends the sovereignty of God, and all the cognate doctrines such as the Doctrines of Grace. It is THE book to give to those just after conversion, and a prime book to give to anyone who defends the free will of man. Pink was a Baptist preacher who held pulpits in England, America, and Australia. His early training was in scientology. His conversion was instant, and complete dedication to the cause of God and truth quickly became evident. This early book by Pink lays Scripture end to end to prove God's control over all persons and events. It is uncompromising, and as such it raises the hackles on the necks of many new students of this doctrine. Persons who knew Pink seldom objected to anything he taught, because he could literally quote hundreds of verses of Scripture verbatim on the subject under discussion. This book may be overwhelming, but it is certain that its many printings have been used of God to convince people of His sovereignty. The Banner of Truth has an edition of this book, but they have abridged their edition by deleting the chapter on Reprobation. If Pink were still alive, he certainly would not have allowed this misrepresentation of his doctrinal belief: that God both elects and reprobates, as Romans 9:21?23 clearly teaches. It is an important stone to guide the steps of those who are not yet convinced of God's absolute sovereignty over all persons and events.

Pink) gives biblical answers to such profound questions regarding the sovereignty of God, in a language every Christian will find not only easy-to-understand but totally engaging and uplifiting.

Pink unpacks the theology of the sovereignty of God for us in a way few others have before or after him. Pink dives into Scripture not only to define the sovereignty of God; he goes on to help us apply the doctrine to various aspects of our lives. Pink passionately challenges us to wrestle with and accept a higher, deeper and broader view of our omniscient and omnipotent King.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: God's right to judge humanity is written on the very fabric of human existence The doctrine of reprobation--that is, the eternal, unconditional decree of God for the non-elect--is frequently misconstrued in both pastoral and theological literature. In Reprobation and God's Sovereignty, Peter Sammons reintroduces this oft-misunderstood doctrine, revealing its relationship to divine sovereignty. With Romans 9 as a guiding text, Sammons presents a thoroughly researched defense of reprobation as an essential part in a Reformed theology that magnifies God and encourages believers to trust in him. Reprobation and God's Sovereignty clearly defines and demonstrates from Scripture the foundational terms and doctrines required for properly understanding reprobation, such as: God's justice Election Compatibilism Secondary causality Preterition Predamnation Understanding these theological ideas proves vital to answering life's all-important question, "Who is God?" Sammons shows how the doctrine of reprobation leads to a greater admiration for God, eliciting higher praise, reverence, and belief in him.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sovereignty and Fatherhood of God: A Discourse, Preached During His Visit to England To understand this subject clearly, we must care fully distinguish between the rul'e Of God as a Sovereign, and the design Of God as a Father; in other words, between God's will considered as His decree, and considered as His desire. The will of God as a Sovereign is always done. It is His un deniable will, not merely that physical and meta physical laws should be obeyed, but that the laws Of human freedom and personal responsibility shouldbe rigidly carried out in all their consequences. Nor have we any reason to suppose that the per turbations and conflicts introduced into the moral world by the element of free will, can by the con ditions of the case extend beyond a certain limit, a limit corresponding in the moral world to the bounds of disorder fixed for the irregularities and disturbances which belong to the unmoral or mate rial universe. No subject, however, can justly be deemed unprofitable, a right knowledge of which is essential either to our eternal salvation, or to the comfort and consistency of our Christian walk. Book excerpt: The Sovereignty of God is a religion classic by English Bible teacher Arthur Pink who articulates and relates the Biblical truths of God's absolute Sovereignty with the main goal to exalt God solely from the pages of Scripture. Pink attempts to draw closer the tension between the sovereignty of God and the responsibility of man, an eternal question that remains debated even though it's seemingly plainly taught in the Scripture. The author's focus is on the divine side of the issue, defining God's sovereignty and presenting the different spheres that it works and operates. Further on he turns to the tension between the sovereignty of God and human will and responsibility.

This book was released on 2008-09 with total page 810 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Existence and Attributes of God comprises the first two volumes of the works of Stephen Charnock (1628-1680), an English puritan divine who was highly skilled in philosophy, patristics, Reformed theology, and Biblical languages. These volumes are his abiding monument. They are worthy of being compared with the finest in theology. "When the existence and attributes of God are called into question, to whom else can we better go than to Stephen Charnock'' . . . ''those [things revealed belong to us and to our children forever]. The material that Charnock discusses is firmly founded in the Word of God'' . . . ''Both the Old Testament and the New emphasize these two things: First, we should study the whole revelation, not just some easy or favorite parts of it; secondly, the study of God's attributes is not dry as dust theology, but is practical; that is, it leads to righteousness" (Dr. Gordon H. Clark, from a preface to this great work in a Sovereign Grace edition, 1958). One of the greatest tragedies in these spiritually starved times is the sad fact that most Christians know so very little about their God. It is often said that this is simply because these volumes are exhaustive on the subject. Yet it is clearly filled with sublime expositions of the truth regarding God's existence and attributes. "Charnock displays God's attributes not as impersonal abstractions for the mind to juggle with, but as qualities observable in the concrete actions of the living God of which the Bible speaks. The technical terms and sometimes, arguments of scholastic theology are employed, but always with a Biblical orientation. Charnock has no desire to speculate, but only to declare the works and ways, the nature and character, of the God of the Bible. The substance of his doctrine is characteristically Puritan and representatively Reformed." (Dr. James I. Packer, in The Encyclopedia of Christianity, Volume II, p. 410) The possessor of these rare volumes will be blessed by getting acquainted with the incomparable God, and thereby will reach a higher plane of spiritual enjoyment never attained before. To know Him better is to love Him more.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Practical Discourse of God's Sovereignty: With Other Material Points Derived Thence; Namely, of the Righteousness of God, of Election, of Redemption, of Effectual Calling, of Perseverance I have known the Author long (full twenty-eight years) to have had a spirit greatl addicted to, andffi'ected with, the savory knowl edge of the truths ere delivered. And though he hath not had the use and help of fetei languages, wherein these points have been mostly written; yet may say of him (as 1 Tim. 4: He hath been long nourished up in the words of faith and good doctrine; and thereunto he hath so far attained, as to be able to cut_the strongest sinews of the principal objections which the adversaries have inva. And, which to me is yet more, he hath extracted the most spiritual, quickening cordials, which the doctrine of grace and election afi'ords plenty of, whereby to comfort all sorts of believers; exhorting and directing the whole company and body of them, how to manage their faith between God and their own souls, in point of election: persuading them all to com mit and betake themselves wholly to God's carrying on their salva tion, in the way of election: and all along hath strewed his discourse with useful exhortations and applications of the doctrines he does deliver; mixing uses lor practice, with the rational discussions, and the ruggeder controversials; which hath been a defect complained of in others, to the reproach of the doctrine itself; and made an argu ment, that the doctrine is not true, seeing 0mm serum est barium, and both are inseparable affections of being. Upon these and like considerations, I de heartily commend this treatise to the judicious reader, nothing doubting, but that it will satisfy the weakest Chris tians, as it hath approved itself to several divines; heping also that this edition will do as much good to men's souls as the termer cdi.
