Book excerpt: The Southern Leopard frog is a frog that is medium in size. It is particularly described by spots on its sides, back, and legs. Its appearance is like that of a leopard, in this way the name. These types of frog cherish living in wetland environments, and they are generally found in Maryland, close to the Chesapeake Bay in Eastern Virginia, and Southeastern Pennsylvania. These leopard frogs are generally green or brown in shading, ordinarily developing between 3 to 5 crawls long.

Like the big cat, a leopard frog lurks in the tall grass, waiting for prey. But as Doug Wechsler says, “You would hardly think this is a dangerous creature, unless you were a grasshopper.” Beautiful photos and helpful hints will draw students into the life cycle of this unique frog.

Book excerpt: Since the publication of the first Atlas of Mammalian Chromosomes in 1967 the continuous compilation of mammalian karyotypes has become a useful instrument in cytologic and taxonomic studies. Technical advances in preparing mitotic cells from nonmammalian vertebrates have since allowed a better comparison of taxa in fishes, amphibia, reptiles, and birds. In these fields the literature is also widely scat tered; and it has become difficult to survey such information, published as well as unpublished, by nonspecialists. These were among the reasons for the new endeavor of compiling a chromosome atlas for nonmammalian vertebrates. An annual publication is planned with presentation of between 10 and 15 karyotypes from each class. In this second volume, 52 species are presented. For convenience in future colation, the numbering system employs class abbreviations, viz. , P-Pisces, Am-Amphibia, R-Reptilia, and Av-Aves. Within each class, the numbers are necessarily consecutive. In general the karyotypes are laid out following the format employed in An Atlas of Mammalian Chromosomes. Whenever possible both sexes are represented, even though sexual chromosomal dimorphism is not (currently) evident. When the sex chromosomes are known, they are so indicated by conventional nomenclature (XX/XY or ZW /ZZ). In the karyotypes of birds the so-called microchromosomes are grouped together at the end without an attempt at complete enumeration, which is presently impossible. They are usually considered as acrocentrics, but a few are distinctly biarmed.

Book excerpt: The northern leopard frog (Rana pipiens) is a medium-sized frog with powerful hind legs and extensively webbed hind feet that are well adapted for jumping and swimming. In February 2004, the Minister of Alberta Sustainable Resource Development maintained the listing of the northern leopard frog as threatened under Alberta's Wildlife Act. The Alberta Northern Leopard Frog Recovery team prepared this plan to guide the management of this threatened species over a 5 year period. The ultimate goal of this initiative is to achieve well-distributed, self-sustaining populations of leopard frogs throughout their historical range in Alberta. A long-term objective (>25 years) is to ensure that there are at least 2 self-sustaining populations of northern leopard frogs in each subdrainage of all major river drainages in southern Alberta. During the life of this plan, the Team aims to protect known sites from anthropogenic threats, improve knowledge of northern leopard frog populations in the province, reintroduce frogs to southern Alberta, increase awareness of the species and its conservation, and monitor the success of reintroduction efforts.

Book excerpt: This study presents an integrative approach to phylogeography and species delimitation that includes genetics, ecology, and morphology and applies this approach to the study system Rana sphenocephala, a widely distributed leopard frog. The taxonomic history of R. sphenocephala is plagued by decades of controversy, and two morphological subspecies are currently recognized. This study aims to reconstruct the evolutionary history of R. sphenocephala and resolve controversy over the taxonomic status of the subspecies. Phylogenetic analyses of the ND1 mitochondrial gene revealed two distinct lineages: a western and an eastern lineage, with a 4.34% sequence divergence. The geographic distributions of these two lineages, which diverged approximately 3 mya, do not correspond to that of the traditionally recognized subspecies. A nested clade phylogenetic analysis (NCPA) showed allopatric fragmentation to be the original source of lineage divergence, followed more recently by isolation by distance and range expansion. Spatially-explicit analyses of genetic structure (e.g. Monmonier's algorithm) helped to further resolve phylogeographic patterns. The extent of ecological divergence between the eastern and western lineages was quantified by overlap comparisons (D and I in ENMTools) of the Maxent ecological niche models and indicated that the two lineages inhabit different environmental niches. However, climate was found to not be a major driver of lineage divergence in R. sphenocephala. When climate data were examined in a cluster analysis and spatially reprojected, a pattern consistent with the geographic distribution of the subspecies resulted, suggesting a link between climate and morphology that may be the focus of future studies. The results from this study suggest that the eastern and western lineages are evolving separately and support their recognition as separate species. Because the type locality for R. sphenocephala is in Florida, the range of R. sphenocephala is recircumscribed to encompass only the range of the eastern lineage.

Book excerpt: Degradation of habitat and disruption of dispersal are major drivers of amphibian declines, including that of the Chiricahua leopard frog (Lithobates chiricahuensis). Currently, the Chiricahua leopard frog is federally threatened and restricted to anthropogenic sources of water, including ponds maintained for livestock, throughout much of its range. Habitat selection and patterns of dispersal between disjunct water sources are not well understood for this species. We captured frogs leaving ponds using pitfall traps and attached radio transmitters to frogs on the Ladder Ranch in southern New Mexico during summers 2013 and 2014. We checked pitfall traps and located telemetered frogs daily for up to 8 weeks. We assessed cues affecting the number of frogs emigrating from ponds using linear models, distances moved by frogs each day using linear mixed models, and finescale habitat selection using conditional logistic regression. Emigration of frogs from ponds was related to rainfall and was greatest at an intermediate level of rain. Daily movement distances were highly variable among individual frogs and not related to sex or size of the frog, which suggests that individual heterogeneity in dispersal behavior may be an adaptation of this species. We observed daily and total movement distances longer than any previously recorded for the species. Habitat selection was very consistent among individuals. Frogs chose habitats with more low-lying cover, a tree overstory, and a mud substrate, features created by summer monsoon rains. We suggest preservation and restoration of habitat features important for frogs and selecting translocation sites and times based on movement behavior observed in this study. Our findings will inform reintroductions of and habitat improvements for Chiricahua leopard frogs, with the eventual goal of delisting this species.

Book excerpt: "Ohio's resident amphibians currently include 25 species and subspecies of salamanders, a complex of unisexual ambystomatid salamanders, and 14 species of frogs and toads. Existing, comprehensive works of amphibians for Ohio are dated and out-of-print. Given this deficiency, and pressured by recent survey and monitoring activity and current research needs, the decision to produce a comprehensive book about Ohio's amphibians, which this volume represents, quickly followed. Focusing on verifiable information about the amphibian species of Ohio, the core of this tome is comprised of 37 chapters, organized by sections on salamanders and on frogs and toads, covering all amphibians in Ohio that have been documented and vouchered. Preceding these taxonomic, species-oriented chapters are sections on the history of herpetological work in Ohio, a summary of the Ohio environment in which its amphibian species exist, informative introductions to amphibian systematics, brief summaries of the two groups, and keys to adult and larval stages. Following the species accounts are sections on potential occurences in Ohio; on species ranking based on conservation status and knowledge; on amphibian conservation; on amphibian distribution; on environmental applications; and, a summary. Completing the book are two appendices involving field and vouchering/documentation techniques, a glossary, a combined and comprehensive listing of cited literature, and an index. This book is both scientifically accurate and written in a style suitable for the complete spectrum of individuals and entities who are professionally or casually involved or interested in amphibians"--Abstract, page iii.
