Book excerpt: Excerpt from Southern Institutes; Or an Inquiry Into the Origin and Early Prevalence of Slavery and the Slave-Trade: With an Analysis of the Laws, History, and Government of the Institution in the Principal Nations, Ancient and Modern, From the Earliest Ages Down to the Present Time IT is essentially the highest genius of the statesman and political philosopher to place human institutions and human progress upon their true foundation. Government, laws, and the organic principles of society owe their perpetuity and ad vancement to the true theory of their existence. History is his only measure of human experience; and the experience of the past can alone light the dark pathway of the future. The smoke and din of turmoil and commotion may for a while over shadow its radiance, but to the undeviating eye of philosophy and truth, it gradually reveals its twilight beams far in the dim distance, and they brighten upon his view like constellations in the celestial fields upon the steadfast gaze Of the astronomer. The eye of the true statesman and political philosopher is the eye of faith; it pierces the dim war-clouds Of contending factions, penetrating into regions of pure truth, into higher and more ample fields of being, and then basks in balmy daylight as calm and peaceful as summer sunshine, after the angry thunder-storm has spent its fury and passed away. The theory of the South has seldom yet been founded in truth, nor the philosophy of her institutions put upon its true ground. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Craig Keener and Glenn Usry's highly acclaimed Black Man's Religion showed in impressive detail that Christianity and Afrocentricity can go together. Now they turn to specific, nitty-gritty questions put to the black church by non-Christians: Is everything good in Christianity plagiarized from traditional African religions? Isn't it intolerant to say Christ is the only way to God? Is the Bible reliable? What about criticisms of Christianity made by the Nation of Islam? Keener and Usry meet these and other important questions head-on, providing responses relevant to and especially for black men and women.

Book Synopsis The Narrative of Robert Adams, A Barbary Captive by : Robert Adams
Download or read book The Narrative of Robert Adams, A Barbary Captive written by Robert Adams and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-10-24 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in London in 1816, The Narrative of Robert Adams is an account of the adventures of Robert Adams, an African American seaman who survives shipwreck, slavery, and brutal efforts to convert him to Islam, before being ransomed to the British consul. In London, Adams is discovered by the Company of Merchants Trading which publishes his story, into which Adams inserts a fantastical account of a trip to Timbuctoo. Adams's story is accompanied by contemporary essays and notes that place his experience in the context of European exploration of Africa at the time, and weigh his credibility against other contemporary accounts. Professor Adams's introduction examines Adams's credibility in light of modern knowledge of Africa and discusses the significance of his story in relation to the early nineteenth century interest in Timbuctoo, and to the literary genres of the slave narrative and the Barbary Captivity narrative.
