Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book on economic co-operation in southern Africa which looks to the future. The first ten years of the Southern African Development Co-ordination Conference have been mainly devoted to co-operation in transport and communications, not least to reduce dependence on apartheid South Africa. In order to move to an offensive to combat underdevelopment, SADCC has recognized the need to move into intra-regional trade and industrialization. Tom Oestergaard's study is an analysis of the obstacles which have to be overcome, and the minimum of changes that the SADCC countries must agree on to achieve balanced and co-ordinated development. fact that Southern Africa is overwhelmingly oriented to foreign markets and suppliers, and the lack of co-ordination which is heightened by the often diverse role of transnational corporations, banks, and donor agencies. illustration by the study of the tractor industry and SADCC. It serves to illuminate and dramatize the constraints, but also the gains to be made if co-ordination can be made a reality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, published in association with the United Nations Environment Programme, examines how co-ordinated action among neighbouring countries could reduce greenhouse gas emissions in ways which are environmentally, economically and socially beneficial. A framework is presented for analyzing regional mitigation options, along with specific proposals for southern Africa, such as pooling electricity supplies, changing transport patterns and promoting new forms of energy. It shows how regional projects and policies can be developed and supported by the global community to help reduce climate change, and provides a study for decision makers, researchers and students in the areas of global climate change, international relations, energy and environmental studies and African affairs.

Download or read book State Security in South Africa written by James Michael Roherty and published by M.E. Sharpe. This book was released on 1992 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is a study of civil-military relations in the Republic of South Africa while Pieter Willem Botha was prime minister (1978-89). The author's controversial thesis is that Prime Minister Botha, recognizing that his country had reached the historical juncture when it needed to establish a new political order encompassing all of its diverse peoples, moved effectively to prepare the ground for fundamental constitutional change. What was needed above all were stabilization measures to assure the support of the white population for reform. Botha used the South African defence force as his primary instrument. By 1989, Professor Roherty maintains, a striking degree of stabilization had been achieved within the country and throughout South Africa, and the groundwork for epochal change had been prepared. The author makes use of exclusive interviews with South Africans from the political, military, intelligence, corporate, and academic worlds.

Book Synopsis Southern Africa's Blue Economy by : Donald L. Sparks
Download or read book Southern Africa's Blue Economy written by Donald L. Sparks and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-05-18 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Southern Africa’s maritime interests are considerable: its oceans and ports are essential to the wealth of the region, are crucial for trade and are an important source of employment, food and energy. However, regional governments do not place sufficient attention on the Blue Economy and its potential to stimulate economic growth. Of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals, goal Number 14 (Life Below Water) is the least funded. Less than 1% of Official Development Assistance goes toward this goal, and even private investment and funding from philanthropic organizations is grossly inadequate to meet Africa’s blue economy needs. It is vital for the international community to face up to the challenges of Africa’s Blue Economy and start working on solutions and for southern Africa’s Blue Economy policies and goals to be expanded. Just as sustainable development green initiatives show promise, so too could Blue Economy projects and activities. Southern Africa’s rich coastal and marine resources need to be managed on both a national and regional level if they are to be used in a long-term, sustainable way. This book provides, for the first time, a concise study of the constraints and opportunities that the Blue Economy offers for southern Africa and the role that the Southern African Development Community (SADC) could play in fostering a sustainable use of its ocean and coastal resources.
