Book Synopsis Region-Building in Southern Africa by : Chris Saunders

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How successful have Southern African states been in dealing with the major issues that have faced the region in recent years? What could be done to produce more cohesive and effective region-building in Southern Africa? In this original and wide-ranging volume, which draws on an interdisciplinary team of mainly African and African-based specialists, the key political, socio-economic, and security challenges facing Southern Africa today are addressed. These include the various issues confronting the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and its institutions; such as HIV/AIDS, migration and xenophobia, land-grabbing and climate change; and the role of the main external actors involved with the region, including the United Nations, the European Union, the United States, and China. The book also looks at the Southern African Customs Union and Southern African Development Finance Institutions, including the Development Bank of Southern Africa and Industrial Development Corporation, and issues of gender and peacebuilding. In doing so, the book goes to the heart of analyzing the effectiveness of SADC and other regional organisation, suggesting how region-building in Southern Africa may be compared with similar attempts elsewhere in Africa and other parts of the world.
Book Synopsis Community of Insecurity by : Laurie Nathan
Download or read book Community of Insecurity written by Laurie Nathan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-23 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring the formation, evolution and effectiveness of the regional security arrangements of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), Nathan examines a number of vital and troubling questions: * why has SADC struggled to establish a viable security regime? * why has it been unable to engage in successful peacemaking?, and * why has it defied the optimistic prognosis in the early 1990s that it would build a security community in Southern Africa? He argues that the answers to these questions lie in the absence of common values among member states, the weakness of these states and their unwillingness to surrender sovereignty to the regional organization. Paradoxically, the challenge of building a co-operative security regime lies more at the national level than at the regional level. The author's perspective is based on a unique mix of insider access, analytical rigour and accessible theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 1990.This volume originates with a conference at Haverford College, April 28-30, 1989. On that weekend an international group of scholars, inside and outside governments, from Africa and elsewhere, assembled to address the theme, "Toward Peace and Security in Southern Africa." The conference was based on a sense of urgency concerning the continuing plight of the region -- reflected in the renewed state of emergency in South Africa and the declining economies in southern Africa - as well as, paradoxically, a sense of impending opportunity for South Africa and the region, as manifested in the Angola-Namibia accords recently negotiated.
Book Synopsis Peace and Security Cooperation in Central Africa. Developments, Challenges and Prospects by : Angela Meyer
Download or read book Peace and Security Cooperation in Central Africa. Developments, Challenges and Prospects written by Angela Meyer and published by Nordic Africa Institute. This book was released on 2011-09 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Discussion Paper provides the most up-to-date insights into Central Africa's peace and security architecture. Its breath and depth attest to a deep knowledge of the history and politics of regional cooperation in a region that has attracted less attention in the literature than West, East and Southern Africa. It provides readers with first-hand knowledge of regional cooperation and integration, and the expansion of this agenda in Central Africa to include peace and security issues. Dispassionate and clear insights are offered into the intra-regional dynamics of the regional peace and security institutions FOMAC and MICOPAX, the challenges and constraints confronting regional peace in Central Africa and the potential for change. It is essential reading for all those seeking a good grasp of the complex dimensions of peace and security in Central Africa and the prospects for the future.
