Descriptive statistics, graphs, and figures are used to illustrate and quantify the crash trends, which depict a comprehensive picture of status and trends of the fatal crashes in southeastern states. The severity of crashes is studied as a function of characteristics of the person involved in the crash, vehicle, traffic condition, physical road geometry, and environmental factors. Detailed geometric feature data were collected for this study, which makes it possible to investigate the relationship between geometric features and crash severity. This study identifies causal factors contributing to the high fatality rate in southeastern states, and sheds light on the differences and similarities among these states for reducing the severity of fatal crashes, by developing multinomial logit models to explain the severity and type of fatal crashes.

Book excerpt: Traffic crash statistics indicate that the eight southeastern states (Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Kentucky) consistently have higher numbers and rates of fatal motor vehicle crashes than the national averages. Under the auspices of the Federal Highway Administration, these southeastern states are conducting a pooled fund study to investigate the overrepresentation of crashes in the region. This study is being coordinated by the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech), with universities in each of the other states serving in a supporting role. This report addresses South Carolina's portion of the study, as performed by a Clemson University research team. The principal objectives of this research were to obtain for the South Carolina Department of Transportation a set of data records for randomly selected fatal crashes on rural South Carolina two-lane roads, evaluate these data, and ascertain how the safety of these roads might be improved by specific crash countermeasures. A comprehensive data set was collected for 157 randomly selected fatal crashes.

Book excerpt: This project completed the North Carolina portion of the pooled fund Southeast Fatal Analysis Project. In addition to completing this portion of the causal chain analysis for North Carolina crashes, the project developed a comprehensive list of candidate safety countermeasures likely to be effective in reducing both the number and severity of fatal crashes on two-lane rural roads in North Carolina. The list includes countermeasures ranked according to their expected influence on fatal crash frequency and severity for two-lane rural roads.

The major research objectives are to investigate the relations between probabilities of fatal crash type occurrence and potential contributing factors from road geometric design characteristics and roadside, environmental features. This dissertation analyzes the regional fatal crash database and successfully develops statistical models to examine the relations and provided meaningful research findings. This dissertation contributes to current traffic safety analysis by directly examining the connection between major fatal crash type occurrence and roadway geometrics, roadside characteristics, and environmental conditions through a regional case study. This study effort addresses the less understood relationship between fatal crash types and road features compared to other crash measures, such as crash frequency, crash rate, and injury severity. The developed fatal crash type prediction models not only demonstrate strong connections between crash types and road characteristics, but also provide a quantitative assessment tool for countermeasures in terms of reduction of fatal crash type occurrence. Since most countermeasures are more effective at mitigating certain type of crashes, the information revealed from the crash type prediction models help clarify the relationship between candidate countermeasures and expected crash reductions.

Millions of people each year will spend long weeks in the hospital after severe crashes and many will never be able to live, work or play as they used to do. Current efforts to address road safety are minimal in comparison to this growing human suffering. This report presents a comprehensive overview of what is known about the magnitude, risk factors and impact of road traffic injuries, and about ways to prevent and lessen the impact of road crashes. Over 100 experts, from all continents and different sectors -- including transport, engineering, health, police, education and civil society -- have worked to produce the report. Charts and tables.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Child injuries are largely absent from child survival initiatives presently on the global agenda. Through this report, the World Health Organization, the United Nations Children's Fund and many partners have set out to elevate child injury to a priority for the global public health and development communities. It should be seen as a complement to the UN Secretary-General's study on violence against children released in late 2006 (that report addressed violence-related or intentional injuries). Both reports suggest that child injury and violence prevention programs need to be integrated into child survival and other broad strategies focused on improving the lives of children. Evidence demonstrates the dramatic successes in child injury prevention in countries which have made a concerted effort. These results make a case for increasing investments in human resources and institutional capacities. Implementing proven interventions could save more than a thousand children's lives a day.--p. vii.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this report is to identify known relationships between commercial vehicle safety and crash causation factors and to prepare a synthesis of safety implications of oversize/overweight (OS/OW) commercial vehicles. This information can be used to support commercial vehicle enforcement and permitting practices and justify expenditures and investments on size and weight enforcement to enhance safety. In producing this report, insight was gained into the impacts of truck size and weight (TSW) regulations through three case studies. The state of practice in estimating large truck crash rates is complicated because of the many configurations and the wide range of possible weights for any particular configuration. This report highlights four primary findings regarding the contributions of OS/OW to commercial vehicle crashes found by its researchers.
