Download or read book Quagmire written by David Andrew Biggs and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2012-03-15 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2012 George Perkins Marsh Prize for Best Book in Environmental History In the twentieth century, the Mekong Delta has emerged as one of Vietnam’s most important economic regions. Its swamps, marshes, creeks, and canals have played a major role in Vietnam’s turbulent past, from the struggles of colonialism to the Cold War and the present day. Quagmire considers these struggles, their antecedents, and their legacies through the lens of environmental history. Beginning with the French conquest in the 1860s, colonial reclamation schemes and pacification efforts centered on the development of a dense network of new canals to open land for agriculture. These projects helped precipitate economic and environmental crises in the 1930s, and subsequent struggles after 1945 led to the balkanization of the delta into a patchwork of regions controlled by the Viet Minh, paramilitary religious sects, and the struggling Franco-Vietnamese government. After 1954, new settlements were built with American funds and equipment in a crash program intended to solve continuing economic and environmental problems. Finally, the American military collapse in Vietnam is revealed as not simply a failure of policy makers but also a failure to understand the historical, political, and environmental complexity of the spaces American troops attempted to occupy and control. By exploring the delta as a quagmire in both natural and political terms, Biggs shows how engineered transformations of the Mekong Delta landscape - channelized rivers, a complex canal system, hydropower development, deforestation - have interacted with equally complex transformations in the geopolitics of the region. Quagmire delves beyond common stereotypes to present an intricate, rich history that shows how closely political and ecological issues are intertwined in the human interactions with the water environment in the Mekong Delta. Book Synopsis Climate Change Education by : Chang Chew Hung
Download or read book Climate Change Education written by Chang Chew Hung and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-05-09 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climate change is a controversial topic; some people assert that climate change is not occurring, and others believe that reports are inaccurate, that whilst climate change is happening, it may not be caused by human activity. There are also climate alarmists who use IPCC reports to support their claims that erratic weather patterns are a result of climate change caused by human activity. Regardless of these different viewpoints, one fact can be agreed upon; climate change is a complex subject and there is a need to educate future generations, enabling them to deal with the plethora of information and views that they will experience in their lives. This book explores what education for climate change entails, discussing the concept of Climate Change Education (CCE) itself, how it can be taught in schools and how public education can be carried out. It instructs what specific subject matter to teach for CCE, and how to evaluate the student learning on the subject. Chapters include: CCE in the Formal Curriculum Teacher readiness for CCE Assessment for and of CCE Lessons from CCE for Public Education Climate Change Education is an extremely useful resource for anyone involved in educating students on climate change and also for those interested in climate change itself.
Book Synopsis Mega Urban Regions of Southeast Asia by : Ira M. Robinson
Download or read book Mega Urban Regions of Southeast Asia written by Ira M. Robinson and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A distinguishing feature of recent urbanization in the ASEAN countries of Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Indonesia is the outward extension of their mega-cities (Bangkok, Jakarta, Manila, Singapore, and Kuala Lumpur) beyond the metropolitan borders, resulting in the establishment of new towns, industrial estates, and housing projects in previously rural areas. This process has both positive and negative effects. On one side, household incomes and employment opportunities are increasing, but on the other, the growth often causes serious problems in terms of environmental deterioration, conflicting land uses, and inadequate housing and service provisions. Mega Urban Regions of Southeast Asia is the first comprehensive work on the subject of ASEAN mega-urban regions. The contributors review T.G. McGee's original idea of desakota zones, and offer arguments both for and against this concept, making a significant contribution to our understanding of the true face of ASEAN cities. The book brings together authors from around the world and will be of interest to a wide audience, including demographers, urban planners, geographers, sociologists, economists, civil servants and development consultants.
Book Synopsis Economic and Environmental Impact of Free Trade in East and South East Asia by : Kakali Mukhopadhyay
Download or read book Economic and Environmental Impact of Free Trade in East and South East Asia written by Kakali Mukhopadhyay and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-12-18 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, the East and South East Asian region has witnessed a rapid expansion of regional economic cooperation through bilateral and plurilateral free trade agreements. The current book attempts to comprehensively analyze the economic and environmental impacts of regional economic integration in East and South East Asia to the year 2020. This region has some of the fastest growing economies of the world. A global economic model was used to undertake the analysis. A rare feature of the book is the detailed environmental implications of the Regional Trade Agreements focusing on air, water, and waste pollution. Economic integration among the East and South East Asian region has been an important agenda item for the academic and policy communities in recent years. The study provides insight into pursuing a concrete multilateral trade liberalization policy (combining ASEAN and other countries in East Asia) and throws more light on the on-going trade and environment debate. This book will be a good addition to the field of trade and the environment. The academic community – primarily researchers and policy makers, and world bodies, such as the WTO, ADB and the World Bank, will benefit from the book.
