This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 519 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fishing industry benefits the people and economies of the Pacific in various ways but the full value of these benefits is not reflected in the region's statistics. Records may be maintained but they are not complete, or accurate, or comparable. The research summarized in this report reaffirms the importance of this sector to the economies and societies of the Pacific island countries. The research reveals that the full value of fisheries is likely to have eluded statisticians, and therefore fisheries authorities, government decision makers, and donors. But its value has never escaped the fisher, fish trader, and fish processor. The difference in appreciation between public and private individuals must raise the question of whether fisheries are receiving adequate attention from the public sector---including the necessary management and protection, appropriate research, development, extension and training, and sufficient investment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book critically examines the relationship between the United Nations Organization and the small states of the Pacific islands. It provides an in-depth coverage of the United Nations, coupled with how Pacific Small Island Developing States interact. It covers three themes, the first one being the position of the UN on the Pacific Islands, which examines the role of the many UN organs, agencies and programs in strengthening individual countries and the region as a whole. It examines the manner in which the UN’s activities have benefited Pacific nations, territories and peoples. The second theme deals with the Pacific states in the UN, and examines the participation of Pacific nations and territories in the UN’s various organs, agencies, and programmes. It analyses the contribution they have made to the effectiveness of the organization, as distinct from the benefits they have sought to gain from it. The third and last theme deals with small states in global public policy, taking a broader look at how small states are faring within the UN system in the age of global discourse on shared public goods/public policy concerns.

Book Synopsis Telecommunications Regulatory Reform in Small Island Developing States by : Siope Vakataki ‘Ofa
Download or read book Telecommunications Regulatory Reform in Small Island Developing States written by Siope Vakataki ‘Ofa and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2011-11-15 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book adopts an approach of ‘mixed-method research’ with an in-depth qualitative comparative case study analysis triangulated by a quantitative statistical analysis. In particular, the book attempts to capture Small Island Developing States control variables in its empirical analysis, often omitted from telecommunications empirical studies due to limited data. Based on the smallest and most isolated small island states in the World, the research’s comparative case study analysis was conducted in five Pacific Island States (Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Tonga and Vanuatu). The book documents the early account of domestic telecommunications policies in Pacific Island case studies deemed useful for future research. In addition, the book proposes concrete policy insights to Small Island Developing State governments, telecommunications operators, academics and relevant international institutions. The book attempts to link three different strands of academic literatures – namely ‘islandness’, ‘telecommunications policy reform’ and ‘international trade agreements (WTO)’ – through analyzing the political economy of telecommunications reform in an island economy context and the role of the fixed-rules of the World Trade Organization on the credibility of telecommunications reform.
Download or read book New Oceania written by Matthew Hayward and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-09-30 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For so long figured in European discourses as the antithesis of modernity, the Pacific Islands have remained all but absent from the modernist studies’ critical map. Yet, as the chapters of New Oceania: Modernisms and Modernities in the Pacific collectively show, Pacific artists and writers have been as creatively engaged in the construction and representation of modernity as any of their global counterparts. In the second half of the twentieth century, driving a still ongoing process of decolonisation, Pacific Islanders forged an extraordinary cultural and artistic movement. Integrating Indigenous aesthetics, forms, and techniques with a range of other influences — realist novels, avant-garde poetry, anti-colonial discourse, biblical verse, Indian mythology, American television, Bollywood film — Pacific artists developed new creative registers to express the complexity of the region’s transnational modernities. New Oceania presents the first sustained account of the modernist dimensions of this period, while presenting timely reflections on the ideological and methodological limitations of the global modernism rubric. Breaking new critical ground, it brings together scholars from a range of backgrounds to demonstrate the relevance of modernism for Pacific scholars, and the relevance of Pacific literature for modernist scholars.
