Book excerpt: This paper aims to develop potential strategies for Korean shipbuilders for sustainable growth by understanding the characteristics of the shipbuilding industry and the current market situation. Before the financial meltdown in 2008, in the five preceding years, the healthy global economy and the rapid growth of the Chinese economy led to 35% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) in shipbuilding orders. Korean shipbuilders' sales and profits increased dramatically and they invested aggressively to meet the global demand. However, because of the financial crisis, the shipbuilding orders in 2009 decreased by 92% compared to 2007. Accordingly, the decrease in new orders will become a serious risk for Korean shipbuilders to manage because it will cause loss of economies of scale and cash deficit, at the same time. Historically, it is true that the profits of Korean shipbuilders generally mirrored the volume of global seaborne trade, which is ultimately driven by global GDP growth. However, even though the world growth rate, as predicted by OECD, turns positive in 2010, the drastic shrinkage in the shipbuilding demand may not easily recover because of oversupply of fleet volume. In this thesis, I will address current status of the shipbuilding market, project a market forecast, and analyze financial information of four major Korean shipbuilders. Considering the current market situation and financial status of Korean shipbuilders, I will suggest for Korean shipbuilders some potential business strategies as follows: focusing on offshore units, exploiting new market demand, and considering business diversification.

Book excerpt: Economic analysis of the industrial experiences of the newly industrialized economies in Asia is generally lacking in the literature. This study attempts to fill that void by providing an in-depth discussion on the economic impact of the industrial policies of Singapore, Taiwan, and South Korea in the three-and-a-half decades after 1960. Throughout the study, a broad perspective of macroeconomic development is maintained. It is highly critical of the narrow-minded objective of certain governments in maximizing the pace of industrialization at the expense of general economic well-being. A comparative analysis of the industrial experiences of the three economies also shows a diversity of constraints and processes. Singapore relied on multinational corporations, Taiwan on returned engineers, and South Korea on chaebols. There appears to be no Asian formula for industrialization. In Hong Kong, there is an ongoing debate on whether some form of industrial policy should be introduced, in view of the perception that Hong Kong is lagging behind the other economies in terms of technology. Drawing on the experiences of the other economies, the concluding chapter of the book provides an informed and balanced answer to this question. Productivity measurement in shipbuilding has been examined and the problems with the current system have been highlighted, along with solutions. This book suggests the usage of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), a mathematical linear programming technique, as an appropriate tool to measure total productivity as well as profitability. The various ways of improving profitability in shipbuilding, by way of cost-cutting techniques, along with some Indian case studies have been explained in the book.
