Book excerpt: The South Caroliniana Library, located on the historic Horseshoe of the University of South Carolina campus in Columbia, is one of the premier research archives and special collections repositories in South Carolina and the American Southeast. The library's holdings—manuscripts, published materials, university archives, and visual materials—are essential to understanding the Palmetto State and Southern culture as it has evolved over the past 300 years. When opened as the South Carolina College library in 1840 it was the first freestanding academic library building in the United States. Designed by Robert Mills, architect of the Washington Monument, it is built in the Greek Revival style and features a replica of the reading room that once housed Thomas Jefferson's personal library in the second Library of Congress. When the college built a larger main library (now known as the McKissick Museum) in 1940, the Mills building became the home of "Caroliniana"—published and unpublished materials relating to the history, literature, and culture of South Carolina. Through a dedicated mining of the resources this library has held, art historian John M. Bryan crafted this comprehensive narrative history of the building's design, construction, and renovations, which he enhanced with personal entries from the diaries and letters of the students, professors, librarians, and politicians who crossed its threshold. Book excerpt: During the Civil War era, black and white North Carolinians were forced to fundamentally reinterpret the morality of suicide, divorce, and debt as these experiences became pressing issues throughout the region and nation. In Moments of Despair, David Silkenat explores these shifting sentiments. Antebellum white North Carolinians stigmatized suicide, divorce, and debt, but the Civil War undermined these entrenched attitudes, forcing a reinterpretation of these issues in a new social, cultural, and economic context in which they were increasingly untethered from social expectations. Black North Carolinians, for their part, used emancipation to lay the groundwork for new bonds of community and their own interpretation of social frameworks. Silkenat argues that North Carolinians' attitudes differed from those of people outside the South in two respects. First, attitudes toward these cultural practices changed more abruptly and rapidly in the South than in the rest of America, and second, the practices were interpreted through a prism of race. Drawing upon a robust and diverse body of sources, including insane asylum records, divorce petitions, bankruptcy filings, diaries, and personal correspondence, this innovative study describes a society turned upside down as a consequence of a devastating war.

Burn the church, Cap This scene in the movie The Patriot raises several questions. Did the British burn churches during the American Revolution? Were churches burned with people locked inside? As you have probably guessed, the correct answers are "yes" and "no." Like many South Carolinians, Jim Neal saw this movie. Since retiring, he had done some part-time work, but always finds himself drawn back to his first love - South Carolina history. Neal knew of a couple of churches had been burned - Old Waxhaw Presbyterian Church in Lancaster, where his mother had been a member, and Sheldon in Beaufort County, where a roadside marker states it was burned by the British. He became intrigued with learning about the churches in South Carolina that were burned and quickly discovered that a list did not exist. With help from the South Caroliniana Library, S.C. Department of Archives and History and Southern Campaigns of the American Revolution, he began to research the churches. Bill Segars's career as a general contractor working from his home base in Kellytown, S.C., was rewarding, but he was drawn to the older churches that he would drive by as he traveled to his company's building sites. His passion for history and his knowledge of construction came together, thanks to Larry Nix, who introduced him to old churches through his book The Old Churches of South Carolina. This 46-page volume contained a brief description of 185 pre-Civil War churches that exist in South Carolina. With this book, a camera and a map in hand, Segars set out on a quest to find, photograph, and research these buildings. His file of churches exceeded 700 when he encountered a book on historical United Methodist churches and places in South Carolina...written by Jim Neal. A phone call by Segars and a couple of meetings resulted in a partnership. The book is subtitled A Pictorial Guide, but it could have justifiably been named A Pictorial Journey. You will find photographs of each site, directions, even GPS coordinates. In addition, the authors have included information on what happened at each site. You will find that history is not always as presented and that we are still learning about these churches.
