Book excerpt: "While there are good reasons to integrate services provided by different health professions who provide care for the elderly, there are few examples of organised programs that achieve that goal for dental services. This publication presents results from a project entitled 'Oral Health for Older People' in which community-dwelling elderly people were first questioned by nurses and general medical practitioners to screen oral health problems. Those who were eligible for dental care with the South Australian Dental Service were subsequently given priority dental treatment. The publication presents findings from the screening assessments and it evaluates changes in self-reported oral health among people who recieved dental treatment. The results demonstrate how a small set of questions administered by medical personnel can effectively identify priority groups who then report marked improvements in oral health after recieving dental care"--Back cover.

Book excerpt: "Oral Health is fundamental to overall health, wellbeing and quality of life. A healthy mouth enables people to eat, speak and socialise without pain, discomfort or embarrassment.1 The impact of oral disease on people's every day lives is subtle and pervasive, influencing eating, sleep, work and social roles. The prevalence and recurrences of these impacts constitutes a silent epidemic. Dental caries is the second most costly diet-related disease in Australia, with an economic impact comparable with that of heart disease and diabetes (AHMAC 2001). Approximately $3.7 billion was spent on dental services in the year 2001-02, representing 5.4 percent of total health expenditure (AIHW 2003a). Despite significant improvements in the oral health of children in the last 20-30 years, there are persistent high levels of oral disease and disability among Australian adults (AIHW 2002a). Poor oral health in this country is most evident among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, people on low incomes, rural and remote populations, and some immigrant groups from non-English speaking background, particularly refugees (AHMAC 2001)." -- Executive summary.

This plan established a framework for improving the oral health and, in turn, the general health of all Australians. The first Action Area identified in the National Plan is the promotion of oral health across the population. Similarly in the NT, Priority Action Area 1 of the Department of Health (DoH) Corporate Plan targets promoting and protecting good health and wellbeing."--p. 3.
