Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Showing how youth from one of the poorest and most violent neighborhoods in Cape Town, South Africa, learn differently in three educational contexts— in classrooms, in a community hip hop crew, on a youth radio show—this book illuminates how South African schools, like schools elsewhere, subtly reproduce inequalities by sorting students into social hierarchies linked to assessments of their use of language. Highlighting the voices and perspectives of young South Africans, this case study of youth in the global South explores how language is linked to cultural mixing which occurred during colonialism and slavery and continues through patterns of global mobility. Dialogue in Places of Learning: Youth Amplified in South Africa demonstrates how language and learning are bound to space and place.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many have argued that ubuntu was a formative influence on the post-apartheid Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), South Africa’s famous transitional justice mechanism. A Discourse on African Philosophy: A New Perspective on Ubuntu and Transitional Justice in South Africa challenges and contextualizes this view in a way that not only provides new findings and reflections on ubuntu and the TRC, but also contributes to the field of African philosophy. One of Christian B. N. Gade’s key findings, founded on qualitative interviews in South Africa, is that some former TRC commissioners and committee members question the importance of ubuntu in the TRC process. Another is that there are several differing and historically developing interpretations of ubuntu, some of which have evident political implications and reflect non-factual and creative uses of history. Thus ubuntu is not a shared cultural heritage, in the ethnophilosophical sense of a static property characterizing a group. In fact, throughout this book Gade argues that the ethnophilosophical approach to African philosophy as a static group property is highly problematic. Gade’s research presents an alternative collective discourse on African philosophy (“collective” in the sense that it does not focus on any single individual in particular) that takes differences, historical developments, and social contexts seriously. This book will be of interest to scholars in African philosophy, transitional justice, politics and cultural heritage, and law in South Africa.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a city that has lost its shimmer, Lindanathi and his two friends Ruan and Cecelia sell illegal pharmaceuticals while chasing their next high. Lindanathi, deeply troubled by his hand in his brother’s death, has turned his back on his family, until a message from home reminds him of a promise he made years before. When a puzzling masked man enters their lives, Lindanathi is faced with a decision: continue his life in Cape Town, or return to his family and to all he has left behind. Rendered in lyrical, bright prose and set in a not-so-new South Africa, The Reactive is a poignant, life-affirming story about secrets, memory, chemical abuse and family, and the redemption that comes from facing what haunts us most.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The establishment of the IBSA as one of the principal platforms of South-South cooperation is one of the most notable developments in international politics during the first decade of the twenty-first century. While the concept is now frequently referred to in discussions about the Global South, there has not yet been a comprehensive and scholarly analysis of the history of the IBSA grouping and its impact on global order. This book: Offers a definitive reference history of the IBSA grouping (India, Brazil and South Africa) – a comprehensive, fact-focused narrative and analytical account from its inception as an ad hoc meeting in 2003 to the political grouping it is today. Situates the IBSA grouping in the wider context of South-South cooperation and the global shift of power away from the United States and Europe towards powers such as Brazil, India and South Africa. Provides an outlook and critically assesses what the IBSA grouping means for global order in the twenty-first century. Offering the first full-length and detailed treatment of the IBSA, this work will be of great interest to students and scholars of International organizations, international relations and the global south.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the mid-1990s the Truth and Reconciliation Commission disclosed its findings on the awful reality of the apartheid era in South Africa. The Commission inspired scholars from Europe, North America, and South Africa to convene a group of their own, to investigate in multicultural, scholarly dialogue the history, theology, philosophy, and politics of race and reconciliation in South Africa. This volume is the product of that important dialogue. And while the focus is the particular environment of South Africa, the contributors work within a comparative perspective, using examples from other nations and cultures to explore that which makes South Africa unique. Ultimately, the book aims to offer not only a better understanding of the depth of injustice in South Africa's past, but also a deeper appreciation for the achievement of the present and the promise of the future--in South Africa and in every other multiethnic region in the world.

Book excerpt: This collection of contributions – drawn from different events, in a dialogue between Germany and South Africa, the global North and the global South – focuses on the challenges, obstacles and opportunities related to cooperation between religion and the state in matters of development. The international impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 poses much more than just a health challenge – the economic, social, political consequences have accentuated the existing fault lines and disparities within countries, and between countries across the world.
