Book excerpt: Excerpt from Progress of South Africa, in the Century Every reader naturally wishes to know with what authority the book in his or her hands, if it professes to be a history, has been written. What, it is asked, were the author's sources of information? What reason is there to believe that his material has been used in a judicious manner? My sources of information are archives, in which I have been making researches for a quarter of a cen tury, many hundreds of printed volumes upon South Africa in various languages, and an intimate ao quaintance with the country and its people, Euro peans and natives. Download or read book Elusive Equity written by Edward B. Fiske and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2004-07-29 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elusive Equity chronicles South Africa's efforts to fashion a racially equitable state education system from the ashes of apartheid. The policymakers who came to power with Nelson Mandela in 1994 inherited and education system designed to further the racist goals of apartheid. Their massive challenge was to transform that system, which lavished human and financial resources on schools serving white students while systematically starving those serving African, coloured, and Indian learners, into one that would offer quality education to all persons, regardless of their race. Edward Fiske and Helen Ladd describe and evaluate the strategies that South Africa pursued in its quest for racial equity. They draw on previously unpublished data, interviews with key officials, and visits to dozens of schools to describe the changes made in school finance, teacher assignment policies, governance, curriculum, higher education, and other areas. They conclude that the country has made remarkable progress toward equity in the sense of equal treatment of persons of all races. For several reasons, however, the country has been far less successful in promoting equal educational opportunity or educational adequacy. Thus equity has remained elusive. The book is unique in combining the perceptive observations of a skilled education journalist with the analytical skills of an academic policy expert. Richly textured descriptions of how South Africa's education reforms have affected schools at the grass-roots level are combined with careful analysis of enrollment, governance, and budget data at the school, provincial, and national levels. The result is a compelling and comprehensive study of South Africa's first decade of education reform in the post-apartheid period.

Book Synopsis Region-Building in Southern Africa by : Chris Saunders
Download or read book Region-Building in Southern Africa written by Chris Saunders and published by Zed Books Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-07-04 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How successful have Southern African states been in dealing with the major issues that have faced the region in recent years? What could be done to produce more cohesive and effective region-building in Southern Africa? In this original and wide-ranging volume, which draws on an interdisciplinary team of mainly African and African-based specialists, the key political, socio-economic, and security challenges facing Southern Africa today are addressed. These include the various issues confronting the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and its institutions; such as HIV/AIDS, migration and xenophobia, land-grabbing and climate change; and the role of the main external actors involved with the region, including the United Nations, the European Union, the United States, and China. The book also looks at the Southern African Customs Union and Southern African Development Finance Institutions, including the Development Bank of Southern Africa and Industrial Development Corporation, and issues of gender and peacebuilding. In doing so, the book goes to the heart of analyzing the effectiveness of SADC and other regional organisation, suggesting how region-building in Southern Africa may be compared with similar attempts elsewhere in Africa and other parts of the world.
