Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although readers' awareness of African Renaissance concept's rise is the point, the major focus remains its link with South African Foreign Policy. Despite glorious achievements, South Africa seems to be an African paradox. The scourge of the HIV/AIDS, high criminality rate, unemployment and the relics of the Apartheid system are still freezing the smooth development and the international outreach. To sum up, this book offers a smooth and easy reading, with challenging questions.

Book excerpt: This open access handbook analyses the role of development cooperation in achieving the 2030 Agenda in a global context of 'contested cooperation'. Development actors, including governments providing aid or South-South Cooperation, developing countries, and non-governmental actors (civil society, philanthropy, and businesses) constantly challenge underlying narratives and norms of development. Book excerpt: The hope and despair surrounding the Afro-Arab Spring in North Africa has only begun to be played out in regional and global politics. And the call for an African renaissance that followed the miraculous political transition in South Africa is, twenty years later, viewed with similar ambiguity. What is clear is that current developments in Africa, north and south, promise something markedly different from what has prevailed at any point since the dawn of the African independence movements of the 1950s and 60s. But the continent's own identity remains unresolved, posing the question whether and how its multiple and divergent experiences can be understood and perhaps woven into a basis for unity. Contributors to this volume explore whether or not events north of the Sahara and on the southern tip of Africa can be catalysts for change in other parts of the continent. Chapters assesses the nature of political resistance, revolution, and transition in North and Southern Africa, addressing critical factors--economics, culture, gender, theology--that reveal the promises and perils of African reform. Includes a foreword by former South African president Thabo Mbeki.

Ike Udogu highlights how political, social, and economic development enterprises are to be vigorously pursued in order to advance the continent's renewal. Bringing into focus the discourses that are significant to move the continent forward, the author provides possible strategies that might lead to peaceful coexistence, development, and generation of wealth for the area's recovery. After several decades of policy missteps, inadequate government, ethnic and religious conflicts, and civil war, Africa is in need of this resurgence. African Renaissance in the Millennium is a book appropriate to all levels of students and researchers with an interest in Africa's future. Book jacket.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1994, South Africa has radically transformed its role in Africa. The one-time apartheid pariah is now a continental leader that is both envied and resented. Its politicians and diplomats have worked on peace interventions and new Pan-African institutions, while South African business has practically stampeded north of the Limpopo in search of new markets. In this rigorous, policy-relevant book, a diverse group of Pan-African scholars examine South Africa's post-apartheid foreign policy, arguing that an effective foreign policy requires a strong domestic base. The book assesses key regional challenges for South Africa - leadership, military and economic power - and less conventional foreign policy concerns such as land conflict and HIV/AIDS. Detailed case studies describe South Africa's role in developing the AU and NEPAD, and its relations with strategic countries in West, Southern, and North Africa, the Great Lakes region, and the Horn of Africa. This unique volume is the first in-depth study of South Africa's critical role in Africa over the last thirteen years. Book jacket.

Book excerpt: Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2013 in the subject Politics - Region: Africa, , language: English, abstract: Through this study, Africa accelerates an African Agenda by embracing the philosophy of African Renaissance which is premised on the renewal and rebirth of Africa. This thesis therefore focuses on a continent aspiring to engage in dialogue and forge a partnership with the rich Global North to implement the millennium developmental plan like NEPAD. The primary lesson from this thesis is that the continent must ensure that it has the full support of 54 states and that continental plans cannot be implemented by a single country whose leadership is contested. Africa’s challenges in implementing the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) have to do with fundamentals of the very idea of NEPAD and its dependency underpinning. These challenges include structural, endogenous and exogenous factors which continue to constrain Africa’s endeavours. So the argument is that Africa failed to implement or was initially destined to fail. Deploying the dependency theory, the thesis delves deeper into Africa’s development trajectory to reflect that NEPAD, just like preceding developmental plans such as the Lagos Plan of Action (LPA), was destined to fail as long as there was no clear paradigm shift from the long standing and perpetual asymmetric donor – recipient relationship although NEPAD is espoused as a partnership but it is still steeped within weakened neo – colonial relations that are incommensurate with Africa’s developmental path.
