Book Synopsis From the Gracchi to Nero by : H.H. Scullard
Download or read book From the Gracchi to Nero written by H.H. Scullard and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-11-18 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Gracchi to Nero is an outstanding history of the Roman world from 133 BC to 68 AD. Fifty years since publication it is widely hailed as the classic survey of the period, going through many revised and updated editions until H.H. Scullard’s death. It explores the decline and fall of the Roman Republic and the establishment of the Pax Romana under the early Principate. In superbly clear style, Scullard brings vividly to life the Gracchi’s attempts at reform, the rise and fall of Marius and Sulla, Pompey and Caesar, society and culture in the late Roman Republic, the Augustan Principate, Tiberius and Gaius, Claudius and Nero, and economic and social life in the early Empire.
Book Synopsis Centre and Periphery in the Ancient World by : Michael J. Rowlands
Download or read book Centre and Periphery in the Ancient World written by Michael J. Rowlands and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1987-10-22 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collaborative volume is concerned with long-term social change. Envisaging individual societies as interlinked and interdependent parts of a global social system, the aim of the contributors is to determine the extent to which ancient societies were shaped over time by their incorporation in - or resistance to - the larger system. Their particular concern is the dependent relationship between technically and socially more developed societies with a strong state ideology at the centre and the simpler societies that functioned principally as sources of raw materials and manpower on the periphery of the system. The papers in the first part of the book are all concerned with political developments in the Ancient Near East and the notion of a regional system as a framework for analysis. Part 2 examines the problems of conceptualising local societies as discrete centres of development in the context of both the Near East and prehistoric Europe during the second millennium BC. Part 3 then presents a comprehensive analytical study of the Roman Empire as a single system showing how its component parts often relate to each other in uneven, even contradictory, ways.

Download or read book A History of Rome from 133 B.C. to 70 A.D. (1904) written by A.H.J. Greenidge and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-09-28 with total page 531 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1904, this volume began what was to be the magnum opus of the highly regarded Classical scholar, A.H.J. Greenidge. Though published posthumously, the work stands alone as a valuable contribution to Classical history. Beginning with a socioeconomic history which exposes the conditions preceding and determining the great conflict of interests to follow, Greenidge then explores the story of Rome from Scipio Aemilianus and the Gracchi brothers until the second election of Marius to the consulship.
