Book excerpt: Excerpt from Source Book of the History of Education for the Greek and Roman Period Since neither history nor education has a meaning of universal acceptation, the "History of Education" presents for solution a problem containing two variable quantities. Without attempt at definition of either term, the following selections from the literary sources are presented as an aid to the exposition of education in its historic aspect. For the most part, these relate to education in the accepted historic meaning of the term, - that of a definitely organized institutional attempt to realize in individuals the ideals controlling a given people. In the early historic period of any people such efforts are not exerted through an institution specially organized for the one purpose; hence the earlier sources are quite general in their nature, relating more to the aims and ideals of education than to its organization. The great majority of the selections, however, deal with education as the work of a specific institution, for thus it is found to be as soon as a people comes into a consciousness of its own ends and of ways of attaining them. With the Greeks a third type of sources is essential to an understanding of their educational thought and practices. These are the philosophical discussions of education, both as to its proper function and as to its theoretically perfect means. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern western education finds its origins in the practices, systems and schools of the ancient Greeks and Romans. It is in the field of education, in fact, that classical antiquity has exerted one of its clearest influences on the modern world. Yet the story of Greek and Roman education, extending from the eighth century B.C. into the Middle Ages, is familiar in its details only to relatively few specialists. Containing nearly 300 translated texts and documents, Greek and Roman Education: A Sourcebook is the first book to provide readers with a large, diverse and representative sample of the primary evidence for ancient Greek and Roman education. A special feature of this Sourcebook is the inclusion not only of the fundamental texts for the study of the subject, but also unfamiliar sources that are of great interest but are not easily accessible, including inscriptions on stone and Greek papyri from Egypt. Introductions to each chapter and to each selection provide the guidance which readers need to set the historical periods, themes and topics into meaningful contexts. Fully illustrated and including extensive suggestions for further reading, together with an index of passages explored, students will have no further need for any other sourcebook on Greek and Roman education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: H. I. Marrou's A History of Education in Antiquity has been an invaluable contribution in the fields of classical studies and history ever since its original publication in French in 1948. French historian H. I. Marrou traces the roots of classical education, from the warrior cultures of Homer, to the increasing importance of rhetoric and philosophy, to the adaptation of Hellenistic ideals within the Roman education system, and ending with the rise of Christian schools and churches in the early medieval period. Marrou shows how education, once formed as a way to train young warriors, eventually became increasingly philosophical and secularized as Christianity took hold in the Roman Empire. Through his examination of the transformation of Greco-Roman education, Marrou is able to create a better understanding of these cultures.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Roman Education The education given to the children of a nation is of necessity shaped by the desire which is commonly felt as to what they shall become as citizens. We can see this very clearly in the history of education at Rome. In the free democracies of Greece the aim, at least of those who were most progressive and most in agreement with the genius of the nation, was directed to the full and harmonious development of the whole nature. That the body should be trained strength, activity and grace, that the intelligence should be quick, accurate, and alert, guided in practical affairs by reason rather than tradition, that every citizen should bring to the judgement of the creations of art a trained and sensitive taste, and should be able to spend his seasons of leisure in music, song or refined discussion, - to ends such as these the whole early training was consciously directed. But it was very different at Rome. So long as Rome remained what she was for nearly five centuries of her national life - a small Italian state, with only rare and limited contact with the rich and fertile world of Greek culture - the education of her children aimed at no more than at the development of those virtues and capacities, the value of which was recognised in daily life. Book excerpt: A Cultural History of Education in Antiquity presents essays that examine the following key themes of the period: church, religion and morality; knowledge, media and communications; children and childhood; family, community and sociability; learners and learning; teachers and teaching; literacies; and life histories. The book balances traditional approaches towards education with the new history of education that tackles the topic from a much broader scope. The chapters integrate evidence from the Greek and the Roman world, next to Christian evidence from late antiquity. An essential resource for researchers, scholars, and students in history, literature, culture, and education.
